To check whether your PC can run a Bethesda game, identify the exact title and edition, open that game’s current Bethesda PC-requirements page, and compare every listed requirement with your computer. Use Windows DxDiag to collect your operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, DirectX information and storage details. Check minimum and recommended specifications separately: meeting minimum is only a compatibility screen, not a promise of smooth or stable performance.
1. Identify the exact game and edition
Bethesda does not use one portfolio-wide hardware checklist. Requirements differ between games and sometimes between editions of the same game. The original Skyrim and Skyrim Special Edition, for example, have separate requirement pages with different specifications. Starfield and Fallout 4 also have their own lists.

Do not use the requirements for an older release as a substitute for the page for the edition you own. A title’s name alone is not precise enough. An edition can change the graphics technology, storage footprint, operating-system support and hardware examples even when the underlying game name looks almost identical.

If you are checking a bundle, remaster or special release, identify the exact executable that will be installed. Then search Bethesda Support for that title rather than relying on a retailer summary, an old forum post or a requirements list copied from another edition.
2. Open the current official requirements page
Find the Bethesda Support page for that exact game and read both the minimum and recommended sections. Check the page immediately before installing because support information can change, while many requirements pages do not display an original publication year.
Record every category the page mentions:
- Supported Windows edition and version.
- Processor (CPU) examples.
- System memory (RAM).
- Graphics processor (GPU) examples and video-memory information, when provided.
- DirectX or another graphics API.
- Available storage and whether a solid-state drive (SSD) is required.
- Internet, account, or launcher requirements.
Bethesda’s old launcher support material says the Bethesda.net launcher ceased use on May 11, 2022. It should not be treated as a current compatibility checker; use the game’s present support page and the storefront’s installation process instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Copy the requirements into a note or spreadsheet exactly as written. Keep the words “minimum” and “recommended” in separate columns. This prevents a common mistake: seeing one familiar number, such as 16 GB of RAM, and overlooking that the CPU, GPU, operating-system version or drive requirement may be different between the two levels.
Do not convert a publisher’s examples into a universal ranking of Bethesda games. The pages do not provide a shared benchmark, expected frame rate or common test scene, so an isolated model name cannot establish that one title is automatically easy or difficult on every PC.
3. Collect your PC’s specifications with DxDiag
Windows includes DxDiag, a diagnostic report that shows the information you need for most requirement comparisons. Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition instructions also recommend saving the complete report, and its Fallout 4 compatibility guidance directs players to DxDiag.
- Press Windows+R to open the Run box.
- Type
DxDiagand press Enter. - Allow the diagnostic tool to finish checking your system.
- Review the System tab for Windows version, processor, memory and DirectX information.
- Review the Display tabs for each graphics adapter, including the GPU name and displayed video memory.
- Click Save All Information and save the text report if you need to compare specifications later or send the report to support.
DxDiag reports what Windows detects; it does not decide whether a particular game will run well. On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, note every adapter. The game may select the less powerful one, which is a separate problem from having insufficient hardware.
Save the report with a descriptive filename, such as the date and computer name. If you later change a driver, Windows version or component, create a new report rather than editing the old one. Comparing two saved reports can show whether the game is seeing the intended GPU or whether a device has disappeared.
The report is a specification record, not a performance test. It does not replace the game’s official requirement page and does not guarantee that a system meeting the listed models will sustain a particular resolution, preset or frame rate.
4. Compare like with like
Match each official requirement against the corresponding field in DxDiag or Windows. Do not compare a CPU with a GPU, or installed disk capacity with the amount of free space available.
| Requirement category | What to check on your PC | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows edition and version shown in DxDiag | Assuming any 64-bit Windows release is automatically supported |
| CPU | Processor model and generation | Comparing only clock speed; architecture and model matter |
| RAM | Total system memory in gigabytes | Confusing system RAM with graphics memory |
| GPU | Exact graphics adapter on the Display tab | Using the laptop’s integrated adapter when the game should use the discrete one |
| Video memory | Dedicated or displayed graphics memory when the requirements specify it | Treating shared system memory as dedicated VRAM |
| DirectX | DirectX version reported by DxDiag | Assuming a newer API alone overcomes an underpowered GPU |
| Storage | Free space on the drive where the game will be installed | Checking total disk size rather than current free space |
| Drive type | Whether that installation drive is an SSD | Assuming every game requires an SSD |
| Online prerequisites | Internet connection and any required account | Expecting an offline installation when the support page requires online access |
For a borderline result, treat the weakest category as the limiting factor. A computer can exceed the CPU requirement while failing the GPU, storage or operating-system requirement.

Compare model families carefully. “More gigahertz” is not enough to establish that one processor meets another model, and a GPU’s name alone does not tell you whether a laptop version, integrated adapter or shared-memory configuration is the one the game will use. Use the exact adapter and processor names shown by DxDiag.
Storage has two separate tests: capacity and type. A drive can have enough total capacity but too little free space, or enough free space while failing a title-specific SSD requirement. Likewise, a PC can have a supported Windows architecture but an unsupported version number.
Mark each row as meets minimum, meets recommended or falls short. If a row is unclear, leave it unresolved instead of assuming it passes. Resolve that uncertainty from the exact Bethesda page or the saved DxDiag report.

The absence of a number in this table does not mean the game has no such requirement; it means the corresponding figure was not stated in the available Bethesda material. Read the complete current page for the exact CPU and GPU models before making a purchase or upgrade decision.
Starfield illustrates why every column matters. Its minimum and recommended lists both specify 16 GB of RAM and 125 GB of storage, but they name different processors and graphics cards. Both levels also require an SSD, while broadband internet appears in the recommended list. Passing the shared RAM figure does not settle the comparison.
Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition each list 8 GB of RAM, yet they are separate games with separate CPU and GPU examples. Their storage figures also differ: Bethesda lists 30 GB for Fallout 4 and 12 GB for Skyrim Special Edition. Those numbers should not be reused for another title.
6. Understand minimum versus recommended
Minimum is a screening threshold
A system at or above the minimum line may be able to install and launch the game, but Bethesda warns that a borderline computer can still have performance problems. Minimum specifications do not establish a frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or loading time.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRecommended is not a guarantee either
Recommended specifications describe a stronger target chosen by the publisher. They still do not promise a particular frame rate because results depend on resolution, graphics settings, drivers, background software, patches and the specific area of the game being rendered.
Read every line, not just the headline component
For Starfield, 16 GB of RAM appears in both minimum and recommended lists, but the CPU and GPU targets differ and an SSD is required at both levels. A computer with enough memory can still fail the graphics, processor or storage condition.
Think of the two levels as separate decisions. Meeting minimum answers, “Is this system within the publisher’s basic screening range?” Meeting recommended answers, “Does this system match the publisher’s stronger listed target?” Neither answer predicts a fixed result for every display or graphics setting.

7. What to do when one requirement is missing
Not enough free storage
First check the free space on the destination drive, not merely the drive’s advertised capacity. If the title requires 125 GB, as Starfield does, leave additional working room for the operating system, updates and other applications. Bethesda specifies the amount and the SSD requirement but does not name a drive interface, capacity to buy, brand or model.
If you are considering an internal SSD, verify your computer’s supported drive type, physical fit, connector and installation procedure before buying. An SSD is not a universal requirement for every Bethesda game.
Do not treat a storage upgrade as a graphics upgrade. More free space can solve an installation failure, but it cannot make an inadequate GPU or CPU meet the listed model comparison. Conversely, adding RAM does not satisfy a title’s SSD condition.
Unsupported Windows version
Do not silently substitute a different Windows release. Check whether the publisher provides a current supported version for the exact title, and update Windows only after confirming that your hardware and other software support the update.
Insufficient GPU or CPU
Identify the failing component from the exact model comparison. A graphics shortfall cannot be fixed by adding RAM alone, and a processor replacement may be impossible or uneconomical if the motherboard does not support it. Verify socket, firmware, power supply, cooling, case clearance and the manufacturer’s compatibility list before selecting an upgrade.
There is no single best upgrade for every reader. First document the shortfall, then confirm that the proposed replacement fits the case, works with the motherboard and has adequate power and cooling. If those checks fail, spending money on a different component will not resolve the original limit.
Insufficient RAM
Confirm the installed amount in DxDiag and whether the motherboard has an open slot or a removable module. Match the required memory type and speed; do not assume that any desktop or laptop module will fit.
After installing memory, run DxDiag again and compare the new total with the requirement. A module that is physically installed but not recognized does not count as available system RAM for the comparison.
8. If the PC meets the list but the game runs badly
Use troubleshooting instructions for the specific game rather than applying one title’s fix list to every Bethesda release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStarfield-specific checks
Bethesda’s Starfield guidance includes these checks:
- Confirm that the game is installed on an SSD, as required by its PC specifications.
- Install current graphics drivers appropriate for your GPU.
- Disable or test without overlays that can interfere with rendering.
- Verify or repair the game’s files through the storefront.
- On a laptop, confirm that Starfield is using the intended discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Check Windows power settings so the system is not limiting performance on battery or an energy-saving plan.
These are Starfield troubleshooting steps, not universal remedies for every Bethesda game. If another title performs poorly, start with that title’s own support page.

- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)

Separate installation problems from performance problems. An unsupported operating system, missing free space or absent SSD can prevent installation or produce an immediate support issue. A game that launches but performs poorly may instead involve the selected GPU, drivers, overlays, files or power settings. Diagnose the symptom that actually occurs.
On a laptop, test while connected to the appropriate power source if the title’s support guidance points to power settings, and verify the active adapter rather than assuming the discrete GPU is being used. Record any change and test one troubleshooting step at a time so you know which action affected the result.
9. A repeatable pre-install checklist
- Write down the exact Bethesda game and edition.
- Open its current Bethesda Support PC-requirements page.
- Copy the minimum and recommended values into a note.
- Run
DxDiagwith Windows+R and save the report with Save All Information. - Compare operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, video memory, DirectX, free storage and drive type line by line.
- Check additional requirements such as internet access, an account or broadband internet.
- Mark each category as meeting minimum, meeting recommended, or falling short.
- If one category fails, verify the PC’s upgrade compatibility before spending money.
- If every category passes but performance is poor, follow the game-specific troubleshooting instructions and verify which GPU the game uses.
Keep the saved DxDiag report and the requirements page together. That makes it easier to diagnose a driver change, a new Windows version or a later game update without relying on memory.
For a second opinion, repeat the comparison after any hardware, driver or operating-system change. A result that was valid for one edition or installation drive does not automatically apply after moving the game, replacing a GPU or switching from integrated to discrete graphics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. The practical answer
Your PC can be considered a plausible match only after it clears every requirement for the exact Bethesda title and edition. Minimum-level matching means “worth trying,” not “will run smoothly.” Recommended-level matching gives you a stronger starting point, while the actual result still depends on settings and software. The most reliable check is therefore a complete, category-by-category comparison followed by title-specific troubleshooting—not a generic Bethesda hardware list or a single component score.
11. Questions readers commonly ask
Can I use the requirements for original Skyrim to check Skyrim Special Edition?
No. Bethesda publishes separate pages with different specifications. Confirm the edition in your library and use that edition’s page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does meeting the minimum mean the game will run smoothly?
No. Minimum is a screening level. Bethesda warns that a borderline system can still have performance problems, and the minimum line does not promise a frame rate, resolution or graphics preset.
Why should I save a DxDiag report instead of just reading it?
The saved report preserves the Windows, CPU, memory, DirectX and display-adapter details you compared. You can send it to support, compare it after a driver or hardware change, and avoid relying on memory.
My laptop has two graphics adapters. Which one matters?
Record both Display entries, then verify which adapter the game is using. Bethesda specifically includes checking GPU selection in its Starfield troubleshooting guidance. Using integrated graphics unexpectedly is different from lacking a capable discrete GPU.
Is an SSD required for every Bethesda game?
No. The SSD condition is explicitly listed for Starfield. Do not generalize it to every Bethesda title. Check the exact game page.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How much storage does Starfield need?
Bethesda lists 125 GB of available storage and requires an SSD for both minimum and recommended configurations. Leave additional working room for Windows, updates and other applications, and verify that the drive is an SSD.

Can adding RAM fix a failed GPU comparison?
No. Each category is separate. More RAM does not replace an insufficient graphics adapter, processor, operating-system version or SSD. Identify the failing component first.
Does a newer DirectX version make any graphics card acceptable?
No. DirectX is only one row in the comparison. You still must match the GPU model and every other category listed by Bethesda.
What if Bethesda’s page does not show a publication year?
Use the page as the current publisher guidance, but do not attach an invented date to its specifications. Recheck the exact page when you are ready to install because requirements and support details can change.
Should I buy an SSD immediately if my PC fails the check?
Only if the exact title requires an SSD or you need additional compatible storage. Bethesda does not specify an interface, capacity, brand or model for the Starfield SSD requirement, so verify the computer’s supported drive type, connector and physical fit before purchasing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to check whether my PC can run a Bethesda game?
Identify the exact title and edition, open its current Bethesda requirements page, run DxDiag with Windows+R, save the report, and compare the operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, DirectX, storage and any SSD or online requirement line by line.
Are minimum requirements a performance guarantee?
No. They are a screening threshold. Bethesda notes that borderline systems may still have performance problems, and minimum specifications do not promise a particular frame rate or graphics setting.
Why do Skyrim editions need separate checks?
Bethesda lists different requirements for original Skyrim and Skyrim Special Edition. The game name alone is not precise enough; use the page for the edition you will install.
What should I do if my laptop uses the wrong GPU?
Check the Display tabs in DxDiag and follow the title-specific guidance. Bethesda’s Starfield troubleshooting steps include confirming that the game uses the intended discrete GPU instead of integrated graphics.
Does every Bethesda game require an SSD?
No. Starfield explicitly requires an SSD, but you should not apply that condition to other games without checking their current official requirements.
Can I solve any failed requirement by adding RAM?
No. RAM, CPU, GPU, operating system, storage capacity and drive type are separate checks. Upgrade only the component that fails, after verifying that the PC supports the replacement.
The Bottom Line
Check the exact Bethesda title and edition, compare every official requirement with a saved DxDiag report, and treat minimum specifications as a starting screen rather than a smooth-performance promise.
