Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo find out whether your PC can run a high-resolution VR headset, check the requirements for the exact headset and the experience you want, then compare them with your computer’s graphics card, processor, memory, operating system, ports, and connection path. A PC that meets a headset’s minimum requirements may still need reduced resolution or refresh rate for demanding games.
Start with the headset and the experience you want
There is no universal “VR-ready” specification. The right target depends on the headset, the game or app, and whether you expect to use the headset at full resolution and refresh rate. Requirements for tethered PC VR also differ from requirements for wireless PC VR or for viewing a Windows desktop streamed to a headset.
Find the manufacturer’s requirements for your exact headset. Separate minimum requirements—which indicate a basic compatibility floor—from recommended requirements or targets for full-resolution, high-refresh-rate use. Then check the requirements for any demanding game you intend to play; headset compatibility alone does not guarantee that a particular title will run smoothly.

- Processor and Windows version: Open Settings > System > About.
- Memory and graphics card: Open Task Manager > Performance. Select Memory and each listed GPU to see the installed RAM and graphics adapter models.
- Graphics driver: In Task Manager, note the GPU model, then check the driver status in Device Manager > Display adapters. For current driver versions, consult the graphics-card maker’s support software or driver page.
Compare the discrete graphics card—not just the processor’s integrated graphics—with the headset’s stated GPU requirement. If your PC has more than one graphics adapter, identify which one the headset connection and VR application actually use.
Check the headset’s ports and the signal path
Match the headset’s required connectors to the ports on your PC. A connector’s shape does not establish that it supports the required data rate, video signal, or power, and laptops can route different ports through different graphics adapters. Check the PC or laptop maker’s documentation if you cannot confirm the wiring.

For example, Valve lists DisplayPort 1.2 or newer and USB for Valve Index; USB 3.0 or newer is required for its pass-through camera. Valve also says that laptops using integrated graphics instead of a qualifying dedicated GPU may not work, and that HDMI and DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters are unsupported. These are Index-specific requirements, not a general standard for every VR headset. Valve Index system requirements
For Meta Horizon Link developer app testing, Meta’s guidance updated September 10, 2026 specifies a Windows PC, a Meta VR device, and a USB-C data cable supporting at least 5 GB/s; it recommends the Horizon Link Cable. This developer setup guidance does not establish that every Quest PC gaming configuration needs that particular cable. Meta Horizon OS Developers: Hardware setup

Valve Index: check its stated minimums and connections
Steam Support lists a minimum NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD RX 480, a dual-core CPU with Hyper-Threading, and 8 GB of RAM for Valve Index. Its recommended graphics card is a GTX 1070 or better. These figures apply to Index and should not be treated as the baseline for all high-resolution headsets. Valve Index system requirements
HP Reverb G2: distinguish full-resolution guidance from lower-resolution examples
Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality guidance, last updated November 22, 2022, describes an optimal 90 Hz, full-resolution experience for headsets such as HP Reverb G2. It specifies an Intel Core i5/i7 or listed equivalent, an AMD Ryzen 5 equivalent or better, an NVIDIA GTX 1080 or AMD RX 5700 equivalent or better, at least 8 GB of RAM, DisplayPort 1.3, and USB 3.0 Type-C with power delivery or the included power adapter. This is published guidance for that headset class and software ecosystem, not a current universal recommendation. Microsoft: Windows Mixed Reality PC hardware compatibility

HP’s Reverb G2 troubleshooting guidance gives further examples: it lists GTX 1080, GTX 1080 Ti, RTX 2060 SUPER, RTX 2070, and RTX 3070 among consumer GPUs that typically run the headset at full resolution. It lists GTX 1060, GTX 1660, GTX 1660 Ti, GTX 1070, and RTX 2060 among cards that typically run it at half resolution, along with several AMD models. These are HP examples, not guarantees for every processor, driver, game, or refresh-rate target. HP: Reverb G2 troubleshooting

For older Windows Mixed Reality headsets, the operating system can be a decisive compatibility limit. Microsoft’s cited guidance says WMR devices are not supported on Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer; it lists support as limited to Windows 10 version 20H2 through Windows 11 version 23H2. Because OS support can change, verify the vendor’s current compatibility guidance before buying a headset or updating Windows. Microsoft: Windows Mixed Reality PC hardware compatibility

When using a smartphone, heat is effectively dissipated from the interior, preventing blurred vision.
Do not confuse PC VR rendering with desktop streaming. Microsoft Mixed Reality Link is a workflow for accessing a Windows 11 desktop from Quest 3 or Quest 3S, not a measure of whether the PC can render demanding VR games at headset resolution. Its listed requirements include Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, with 6 GHz recommended. Microsoft: Mixed Reality Link
Run a readiness checker only for its supported ecosystem
Microsoft describes Mixed Reality Portal as the best way to check readiness for Windows Mixed Reality. It checks hardware, drivers, and the operating system, and reports “You’re good to go,” “Supports some features,” or “Can’t run mixed reality.” Microsoft also cautions that the experience varies with the PC configuration and headset ports. A result from this checker does not certify every headset, VR game, or setup. Microsoft: Windows Mixed Reality PC hardware compatibility
Turn the results into a buying or upgrade decision
- Write down the exact target: headset model, intended game or app, connection method, and desired resolution and refresh rate.
- Compare the PC with the headset’s requirements: check CPU, discrete GPU, RAM, operating-system version, and required ports against the official page.
- Verify the connection path: confirm that the required video and USB ports are present and, especially on a laptop, that the video path uses a qualifying discrete GPU.
- Check the game separately: look up its own PC requirements. A headset’s minimum specification does not promise a particular game’s performance.
- Choose a realistic mode: if the PC meets a baseline but not the headset’s full-resolution target, expect that lower resolution or refresh rate may be needed. Do not assume a pass result means every game will sustain full resolution and refresh rate.
- Upgrade only against a specific shortfall: identify whether the limiting factor is GPU, CPU, memory, ports, or OS support before choosing an upgrade. A graphics-card example from one headset’s guidance is not a recommendation for all VR systems.
Compare candidates on the same four points
If you are considering more than one headset, use the same checklist for each rather than relying on a generic VR-ready label:
Quick Recap
- GPU and CPU target for your intended resolution and refresh rate.
- Physical connectors required, and whether the PC—particularly a laptop—routes them through the qualifying discrete GPU.
- Operating-system and software ecosystem support.
- Whether you want tethered PC VR, wireless PC VR, or desktop streaming.
