On Windows 11, open Task Manager > Performance, select the GPU the game will use, and check its dedicated GPU memory capacity—not its current usage or shared memory. Then compare the GPU model and dedicated VRAM with the specific game’s official PC requirements. There is no single VRAM amount that guarantees every new game will run well.
Find the GPU the game will use

Right-click Start and open Task Manager.

Select Performance, then choose each listed GPU in turn. Note the model name. A laptop or desktop may have both integrated graphics and a separate graphics card, so check which processor the game is set to use.
Windows 11 also identifies the GPU at Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, under Display information. See Microsoft’s GPU identification guidance (April 11, 2023; Microsoft notes that features and availability can vary by region).
Read the memory figures correctly
In Task Manager’s GPU performance view, look at the total or capacity for Dedicated GPU memory. Do not mistake the amount currently in use for the GPU’s total capacity: usage changes as Windows and applications use the GPU.

Dedicated GPU memory: On a discrete graphics card, this is memory on the card reserved for GPU use. Microsoft describes it as “memory that is exclusively reserved for use by the GPU and is managed by VidMm” in its DirectX Developer Blog explanation of GPU memory in Task Manager.

Shared GPU memory: This is ordinary system RAM that the GPU can use. It is not extra physical VRAM on a discrete card, so adding it to dedicated memory does not give you a larger VRAM figure.

Integrated graphics need a qualification: some reserve part of system DRAM for graphics, while others use shared memory. A dedicated-memory figure shown for an integrated GPU may therefore describe RAM reserved from the computer’s system memory, not memory chips on a separate card. Microsoft’s Task Manager article explains the distinction.
Task Manager’s GPU performance reporting depends on a driver that supports WDDM 2.0 or later. If the GPU performance view or its memory fields are missing, identify the GPU through Advanced display and check the graphics-card manufacturer’s specifications instead. Microsoft also explains the need for accurate graphics-memory reporting in its Reporting Graphics Memory documentation (last updated August 30, 2024). Task Manager’s per-process memory figures can count shared allocations in multiple processes, so they are not a reliable way to infer the card’s total VRAM.

Compare the GPU with the game’s requirements
Look up the current official PC requirements on the game’s publisher or store page. Steam Support advises players to check a game’s system requirements in its performance troubleshooting guidance.

Compare the GPU model, not just the memory number. If the requirement names a graphics card, check whether your GPU is that model or an appropriate equivalent. GPU capability and support for required graphics features matter alongside VRAM.

Compare dedicated VRAM when the requirement states it. Use the GPU’s dedicated capacity, not its shared memory or current usage. If the game names a card but gives no memory figure, verify that card’s specifications with its manufacturer.

Read minimum and recommended requirements as different guidance. Minimum is the game’s stated floor, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics quality. Recommended specs are a more useful comparison if you want a better experience, but they still do not guarantee a result at settings the publisher has not specified.

Check the rest of the requirements. CPU, system memory, operating system, and drivers can also affect whether the game runs well. Steam notes that outdated CPU, GPU, or audio drivers may reduce performance even when video hardware meets or exceeds the listed requirements.
If your GPU is integrated, compare its exact model and capabilities with the game’s stated requirements; shared system RAM is not a direct substitute for dedicated VRAM on a discrete card.

A capacity check tells you how much dedicated memory the GPU has; it does not, by itself, predict whether a particular game will launch or deliver the performance you want. The answer depends on the named game’s requirements, the GPU model and capabilities, and your target resolution, graphics settings, and frame rate. Because no game or target experience is specified here, a universal “enough VRAM” number or card recommendation would be misleading.
If the game performs poorly despite meeting its listed requirements, outdated drivers are one possible issue. Steam provides separate guidance for updating drivers; a driver update is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that performance will improve.
