The reliable way to find an open proxy is to test forwarding from outside your trusted network. First inventory internet-facing listeners, then exercise each suspected HTTP proxy with ordinary requests and an HTTPS CONNECT tunnel. A listening port alone is not proof; an unauthenticated request that the server relays to a destination chosen by the requester is.

Nmap’s http-open-proxy NSE script automates GET, HEAD and CONNECT checks. Confirm its result with a controlled manual request, restrict access with authentication and default-deny rules, disable unused listeners, and repeat the same external tests after every change.

A forward proxy accepts a request from a client and fetches a resource from another server. Nmap describes the dangerous configuration as a server that “will blindly relay requests from untrusted hosts to servers of their choosing.” An attacker can make traffic appear to originate from your network, consume your bandwidth, or use the proxy as a path toward systems that should not be reachable directly.
An open port, a process named “proxy,” or a successful connection to a banner does not by itself establish that condition. The decisive evidence is successful unauthorized forwarding. A service that only accepts authenticated users, permits a fixed upstream, or serves a deliberate reverse-proxy application is not an open forward proxy merely because it listens on the internet.
What you need before testing
- An approved public IP address or hostname and permission to test it.
- A test machine on a different network from the server—preferably an ordinary internet connection, not the same LAN or cloud security boundary.
- Nmap with its NSE scripts, plus a command-line HTTP client such as
curl. Netcat can help with a raw CONNECT check. - A harmless HTTP or HTTPS endpoint that you own or are explicitly authorized to contact, so the response is recognizable and the test cannot be mistaken for abuse.
- Administrative access to the server, firewall, cloud security group and proxy configuration for remediation.
Record the tester’s source IP, target address, port, destination, method, response code, timestamp and configuration version. Those details make the result reproducible and help distinguish a proxy finding from a firewall or NAT issue.

Step 1: Inventory every internet-facing listener
Start from outside the trusted network. An internal scan can show a port as reachable while an internet-originated scan is blocked, or the reverse can occur when different firewall rules apply. Scan the public address and note each open TCP port, service banner and apparent protocol.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →nmap -sV <PUBLIC_IP_OR_HOSTNAME>
Use a narrower scan when you already know the suspected ports:
nmap -sV -p <PORT_LIST> <PUBLIC_IP_OR_HOSTNAME>
Look for listeners operated by HTTP proxy software, web gateways, development tools or generic tunnel services. Do not infer openness from a conventional port number; a proxy can use any listener, and a port commonly associated with proxies may host something else. Save the scan output before changing configuration.
Step 2: Run Nmap’s HTTP open-proxy test
The http-open-proxy NSE script tests proxy behavior rather than merely checking that a socket accepts connections. Run it against each suspected HTTP listener:
nmap -p <PROXY_PORT> --script http-open-proxy <PUBLIC_IP_OR_HOSTNAME>
The documented script attempts to connect through the target to www.google.com and reports methods that produced a valid response. If organizational policy does not permit that destination, use an approved custom probe or perform the manual tests below against your own endpoint instead. Never aim a test at a destination you are not authorized to contact.
How to read the result
- GET succeeds: the listener fetched an HTTP resource for an unauthenticated client. That is evidence of forwarding, not just a banner.
- HEAD succeeds: the listener relayed a header-only request. Treat it as proxy functionality even if the body of a GET is filtered.
- CONNECT succeeds: the listener established a TCP tunnel. This is the most serious result because the tunnel can carry arbitrary protocols, not only HTTP.
- All probes fail or require credentials: the tested path is not an unauthenticated open proxy from that source network. Check other listeners and source networks before closing the investigation.
A script result is scoped to the address, port, protocol and source location you tested. Authentication, source ACLs or a cloud firewall may make the same service behave differently for another client.

Step 3: Confirm behavior manually
Manual checks provide an auditable request and let you use a destination whose response you recognize. Substitute your public address, listener port and test host in each command.
Test an ordinary GET
curl -i -x http://<PUBLIC_IP_OR_HOSTNAME>:<PROXY_PORT> http://<YOUR_TEST_HOST>/proxy-check
A successful proxy test normally returns the test host’s status line or a distinctive response body. A direct connection error, an explicit authentication challenge, or a policy-denied response means the request was not anonymously forwarded. Check the test host’s access log as well; seeing the request arrive from the proxy confirms the path.
Test HEAD separately
curl -I -x http://<PUBLIC_IP_OR_HOSTNAME>:<PROXY_PORT> http://<YOUR_TEST_HOST>/proxy-check
Some configurations deny GET bodies but still relay HEAD. A successful header response therefore deserves the same security review as a successful GET.
Test HTTPS CONNECT
When curl is given an HTTPS URL through an HTTP proxy, it requests a CONNECT tunnel before negotiating TLS:
curl -v -x http://<PUBLIC_IP_OR_HOSTNAME>:<PROXY_PORT> https://<YOUR_TEST_HOST>/proxy-check
In verbose output, look for a proxy response such as HTTP/1.1 200 Connection established, followed by the TLS exchange with your test host. A 2xx tunnel response without authentication demonstrates that the proxy can create a raw connection to the requested host and port.

For a lower-level check, send a deliberately limited request with a client that supports raw TCP:
printf 'CONNECT <YOUR_TEST_HOST>:443 HTTP/1.1rnHost: <YOUR_TEST_HOST>:443rnrn' | nc <PUBLIC_IP_OR_HOSTNAME> <PROXY_PORT>
Stop after observing the response; do not send application traffic through an unauthorized tunnel. Squid’s documentation explains why CONNECT matters: once established, the tunnel can shuttle arbitrary protocols, not just web requests.

Test from more than one network
Repeat the checks from an approved external network and, if appropriate, from an internal client that is supposed to be authorized. Compare the results rather than assuming one vantage point represents all users.
| Test source | What it answers | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Untrusted internet address | Can an arbitrary external host reach and use the listener? | Source IP, scan output, method, destination and response |
| Approved client network | Does the intended proxy workflow still operate? | Client identity, authentication result and successful request |
| Other permitted network or cloud region | Are ACLs or security groups inconsistently applied? | Perimeter rule, source range and differing result |
Document both success and failure. A proxy restricted to selected source ranges is not open to the whole internet, but a forgotten range or overly broad cloud rule can still expose it to untrusted users.
Distinguish an open forward proxy from intentional services
Use the following questions when a listener is found. They separate a dangerous relay from a deliberately constrained design.

| Control | Open-forward-proxy indication | Constrained or intentional design |
|---|---|---|
| Destination choice | The requester can select arbitrary hosts or ports. | Only a fixed upstream, allow-listed destinations or a specific application route is possible. |
| Authentication | GET, HEAD or CONNECT works without credentials. | Every client must authenticate, or an enforced network identity is required. |
| Tunneling | CONNECT creates a tunnel to an arbitrary port. | CONNECT is disabled or limited to documented destinations and ports. |
| Access control | Source and egress rules default to allow. | Inbound and outbound policy defaults to deny, with narrow exceptions. |
| Logging | Requests, clients or tunnel events are absent or difficult to review. | AAA, proxy, firewall and egress events are centralized and monitored. |
| Exposure intent | The listener is reachable from the public internet without a business need. | The listener is private or explicitly required for a documented service. |
A reverse proxy can be intentionally internet-facing because it forwards only to configured applications. That does not make it an open forward proxy unless an untrusted requester can choose an arbitrary destination.
How to interpret common outcomes
Only the port scan is positive
An open TCP port with no successful forwarding is an exposure to review, not proof of an open proxy. Identify the process, verify its intended role and check whether a firewall or authentication layer blocks proxy requests.
GET works but CONNECT fails
The service is relaying at least some HTTP traffic. Remove anonymous access or constrain destinations even if tunneling is disabled; attackers can still consume bandwidth or hide web requests through the server.
CONNECT works without credentials
Escalate this as a high-priority exposure. The tunnel can carry protocols other than HTTP and may reach ports that ordinary web filtering does not inspect. Review egress policy and historical logs immediately.
Internal tests pass but external tests fail
This may be the intended design: the proxy is available only to an approved network. Confirm that the external block is enforced by a default-deny perimeter rule and that no alternate public listener bypasses it.

Results change between external networks
Compare source ranges, IPv4 versus IPv6, DNS answers, load-balancer back ends and cloud security-group rules. Test each public address that DNS or the load balancer can return.
How to stop an unauthenticated proxy
Apply changes in a controlled order, preserving the previous configuration and a maintenance path so you do not lock out authorized administrators.
- Contain the public exposure. At the firewall or security group, block untrusted source ranges and unnecessary proxy ports while you investigate. Keep an approved administrative route.
- Require authentication. Configure an authentication mechanism supported by the proxy and verify that anonymous GET, HEAD and CONNECT requests are rejected. Ncat’s documentation warns that an unauthenticated proxy can enable attacks or evasion.
- Set default-deny inbound and egress ACLs. Allow only documented client networks, destination ports and business-required destinations. CISA recommends a strict default-deny strategy rather than an allow-list layered on an implicit permit.
- Restrict or disable CONNECT. If tunneling is not required, turn it off. If it is required, permit only the exact destination hosts and ports needed by the application.
- Disable unused listeners and services. Stop and remove proxy software that has no current purpose, and remove stale port-forwarding rules, container publishes and load-balancer listeners.
- Constrain the service account and host egress. The proxy should not be able to reach management networks, loopback-admin interfaces or sensitive internal ranges unless that path is explicitly required.
- Centralize logs and alerts. Send authentication, proxy, firewall and AAA events to a protected logging system. Alert on unknown client addresses, unusual destinations, CONNECT volume, bandwidth spikes and repeated authentication failures.
- Audit configuration regularly. Track configuration versions, review ACL changes and scan the public address after infrastructure changes. CISA advises disabling unnecessary internet-facing services and maintaining regular configuration audits.
Investigate possible abuse before closing the finding
Preserve logs before rotating or deleting them. Search for client addresses that are not approved, destinations outside the business allow-list, repeated CONNECT attempts, long-lived tunnels, sudden outbound bandwidth growth and complaints that traffic appeared to originate from your network. Correlate proxy timestamps with firewall, DNS, authentication and host-process logs.
If the server handled sensitive traffic or the proxy was reachable for an unknown period, follow your incident-response process. Rotate credentials that may have traversed the service, inspect the host for unauthorized changes and ask your network team to check whether internal destinations were reachable through the proxy. Do not describe the event as resolved until the external verification tests fail as intended.
Verify every remediation change
Repeat the same Nmap and manual tests from the same external source used for the initial finding. Keep the before-and-after outputs together.
- Unauthenticated GET is rejected, times out at the perimeter or reaches no test-host log.
- Unauthenticated HEAD is rejected under the same policy.
- Unauthenticated CONNECT does not return a successful tunnel response.
- Authorized clients still succeed with the required credentials and destinations.
- Unapproved egress destinations and ports are denied by the network policy.
- The public scan shows no unnecessary proxy listener or alternate address.
- Logs contain the rejected attempts and can be tied to a source, rule and timestamp.
Keep the source IP, target address, port, method, destination, response code, command output and configuration version with the change record. Re-run the checks after software upgrades, firewall changes, DNS or load-balancer changes and new container deployments.
A compact decision checklist
- Did an external scan identify every public listener?
- Did you test forwarding behavior rather than infer it from an open port?
- Did you exercise GET, HEAD and HTTPS CONNECT?
- Was the destination owned or authorized, and was the response recorded?
- Did you compare untrusted and approved source networks?
- Are authentication, source ACLs and egress ACLs enforced by default-deny rules?
- Is CONNECT disabled or narrowly limited?
- Are unused listeners removed and security logs centralized?
- Did the same external tests confirm the fix?
If an unauthenticated client can choose a destination and your server relays the request—or establishes a CONNECT tunnel—treat the service as an open proxy until those controls are in place.
