The quickest way to see your site’s PHP version is in WordPress itself: sign in to wp-admin, go to Tools > Site Health > Info, expand Server, and read the PHP version listed there. This works without cPanel because Site Health reports the PHP runtime that the web server is using for WordPress.

- In the left-hand menu, select Tools.
- Select Site Health.
- Open the Info tab.
- Expand the Server section.
- Locate the PHP version value and record the complete major, minor and patch number shown.
The Server panel contains PHP and other server-setup information. The displayed value is the PHP runtime handling WordPress requests through the web server, not merely a version selected in a hosting interface. Site Health is an information screen: opening it reports configuration but does not change the server’s PHP version.
What the number tells you
PHP versions use a major, minor and patch pattern, such as 8.3.x. Keep the complete value when documenting your environment. A major or minor change can affect compatibility differently from a patch update, so “PHP 8” is not precise enough for a migration decision.

WordPress currently recommends PHP 8.3 or greater on its requirements page. WordPress also documents that PHP 7.4 and later can still run in legacy environments, but those releases have reached official end of life. End-of-life software no longer receives the vendor’s normal security maintenance and can leave a site exposed to known vulnerabilities. A site running an older release should therefore be treated as a compatibility and security-review task, not simply as a number to update whenever convenient.
Your result describes the PHP runtime available to the web server. It does not by itself prove that every command-line tool, scheduled task or separate staging installation uses the same PHP binary. If you maintain those environments, check each one through its own control panel or command-line configuration as well.

Check PHP without cPanel
You do not need cPanel when you have administrator access to WordPress. The Tools > Site Health > Info > Server route is the canonical dashboard check and is the least disruptive option because it only reads configuration.
If you cannot reach wp-admin, the host controls PHP at the server level. Open the hosting provider’s control panel and look for a PHP settings, PHP version, runtime, or server configuration area. Control-panel wording varies by host, so the exact menu name is not universal. If no selector or server-information page is available, contact hosting support and ask which PHP runtime is assigned to the domain that serves WordPress.
WordPress cannot always change PHP from inside the dashboard. A plugin or WordPress setting may report compatibility information, but the host or server administrator ultimately controls the runtime used by the web server.

When Site Health is missing
WordPress 5.2 and newer
WordPress 5.2 and later include Site Health tools. On these versions, first confirm that you are looking under Tools while logged in with an account that can access the dashboard. A restricted user role, an administration-customization plugin, or a security policy can hide menu items even when the feature exists.
Older WordPress installations
Older WordPress versions do not include the built-in Site Health screen. The community-maintained Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin can expose comparable health information after it is installed and activated. Use a trusted copy from the official WordPress plugin directory, keep a backup, and remove or deactivate it when it is no longer needed if your maintenance policy does not require it.
An absent menu is also a reason to check the WordPress version itself. Running an old core release can affect more than the visibility of Site Health; it can also limit compatibility with current themes, plugins and supported PHP releases.
How to record the result correctly
Write down the version exactly as displayed, along with the date and the site or environment it belongs to. A useful maintenance record includes:
- The domain or staging site checked.
- The full PHP major, minor and patch value.
- The WordPress core version shown in the dashboard.
- The active theme and plugin set at the time of the check.
- Whether the check was performed before or after a hosting change.
This context prevents a common mistake: comparing a production result with a staging result and assuming they share one server configuration. It also gives you a baseline for post-change verification.

Compare the result with WordPress requirements

The core function wp_check_php_version() evaluates the runtime value PHP_VERSION. Its result includes the recommended version, minimum version, active support, security-update status and whether the installed version is considered acceptable. That logic explains why Site Health can distinguish a merely running version from one that is within WordPress’s supported guidance.
Decide whether a PHP change is necessary
Finding an older version does not mean you should immediately switch it in the hosting panel. Treat the displayed version as the starting point for a controlled change:
- Check the current WordPress core version and update it if your maintenance plan permits.
- Check that the active theme and every active plugin has a version compatible with the target PHP release.
- Confirm that the host supplies the PHP extensions your site depends on.
- Create and verify a current backup of the database and files before changing the runtime.
- Prefer a staging or cloned site for the first test when your host provides one.
- Plan a period when you can inspect the site immediately after the change.
These are operational safeguards rather than a promise of a universal migration procedure. WordPress’s documentation establishes where to read the version and that PHP is controlled by the host; the exact upgrade workflow depends on the hosting stack and the software installed on your site.
Change PHP through the hosting provider
If the compatibility review supports an upgrade, use the host’s documented PHP-version control. The labels and screens differ between providers, but the safe sequence is consistent:

- Find the PHP version or server-runtime setting and note the current selection before changing it.
- Choose the target supported release offered by the host.
- Apply or save the change according to the host’s instructions.
- Wait for the host to reload the web service if it performs that step automatically.
- Return to WordPress and repeat Tools > Site Health > Info > Server to confirm the runtime actually changed.
- Open the home page, several representative posts, the login screen and the administrative dashboard.
- Exercise important functions such as forms, checkout, search, media uploads or scheduled publishing, according to what your site uses.
A selector change is not the whole migration. WordPress core, themes and plugins still need to be current and compatible, and a site can fail because of an extension, custom code or an outdated integration even when the PHP selector reports the desired version.

Verify the site after a host-side change
Use the same Site Health path after the host reports success. If the displayed value is unchanged, the setting may have been applied to a different domain, a different server pool, or only one part of the hosting account. Contact support with the domain, the old value, the selected value and the time of the change.
Then perform a focused functional check:
- Load the public home page and a page containing the site’s main content type.
- Sign in and open the dashboard without an error or redirect loop.
- Open the editor and save a harmless draft.
- Check media upload and image display if the site publishes images.
- Test the site’s essential forms, commerce flow or account functions, if present.
- Review server and WordPress error logs supplied by the host for new fatal errors.
If a failure appears, restore the previous PHP version only if your host’s recovery process calls for it, preserve the error details, and identify the responsible theme, plugin or custom code before attempting another upgrade. A rollback restores availability; it does not make an end-of-life runtime a secure long-term solution.

The Server section is not visible
Make sure you are on the Info tab rather than the Site Health status overview, and expand the Server disclosure control. If the entire Site Health feature is absent, check whether the site is older than WordPress 5.2 or whether an administrator has restricted the menu.
You cannot access wp-admin
Use the host’s server-information or PHP-settings area, or ask support for the PHP runtime assigned to the site. WordPress dashboard instructions cannot help when the application itself is inaccessible.
The host panel and WordPress disagree
Use the WordPress Server value as the runtime currently serving web requests, then ask the host why its panel shows something else. Possible explanations include a domain mapped to another account, a pending service reload, separate web and command-line PHP configurations, or a proxy and origin that are not using the same server.

The warning remains after an upgrade
Reopen Site Health after the host confirms the change and clear any page or server cache according to the host’s instructions. If the new value is present but the warning persists, inspect the warning’s specific requirement and confirm that WordPress core, themes and plugins are updated. Do not assume that a warning is a performance benchmark or that an upgrade automatically produces a guaranteed speed improvement; the available documentation does not establish a universal gain.
The site shows a fatal error after switching versions
Use the host’s documented rollback or recovery option, record the exact error and identify the component named in it. Test updates on staging where possible, then resolve the incompatibility before selecting the newer runtime again. Avoid repeatedly switching versions without a backup and an error record, because that obscures which change caused the failure.

Production, staging, development and command-line environments can have different PHP assignments. Check each environment independently if you deploy between them. A staging site that passes on PHP 8.3 does not prove that production has been changed, and a command-line task using another PHP binary does not alter the web-server value shown in WordPress.
When opening a support ticket, include the environment name, domain, full PHP value from Site Health, WordPress core version, the time of the check and any relevant error message. This gives the host enough context to locate the correct server assignment instead of answering for another site in the same account.
How often to check
There is no single interval that fits every site. Check after a hosting migration, a PHP-version change, a major WordPress update, or a move between staging and production. Include the value in routine maintenance records so an unexpected change is easier to spot. Sites that cannot obtain a supported PHP release from their provider should make provider replacement or migration planning part of their maintenance work rather than relying indefinitely on an end-of-life runtime.
