Check compatibility in layers before changing server PHP: make a restorable backup, update WordPress and extensions while the current PHP version still runs, read every declared requirement, scan the actual plugin and theme code against your target PHP release, and test the site in staging or another reversible environment. A plugin that declares support for a PHP version can still fail at runtime, while a scanner can miss an issue or report a false positive. Treat compatibility checking as risk reduction, not a guarantee.

What you are checking—and what “compatible” really means
A PHP upgrade changes the language runtime used by WordPress core, plugins, themes, scheduled jobs and custom code. Compatibility has two separate layers:

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Declared compatibility: the minimum PHP version and WordPress version recorded in a plugin’s metadata.
- Behavioral compatibility: whether the code actually executes correctly on the target PHP version, including less-used paths such as checkout, REST requests, cron tasks and administrator-only screens.
WordPress core validates declared requirements. A plugin can be blocked with a plugin_php_incompatible error when the running PHP version is below its declared minimum. That validation is useful as a first filter, but it does not execute every feature or detect every outdated function. Passing the metadata check is therefore not proof that the plugin is safe on a newer PHP release.
The practical goal is not to prove that a site can never fail. It is to identify blockers while the old environment still works, create a rollback route, and expose real failures before visitors or customers do.

Know the PHP versions involved
Record the version you have now
Write down the PHP version currently used by the production site and by any staging copy. Do not assume that the version shown by your desktop command line is the version serving the website; hosting panels, containers and local tools can use different runtimes. WordPress’s Site Health screen and your hosting control panel are appropriate places to confirm the web runtime.
Choose a specific target
WordPress.org’s current requirements page (accessed in 2026) lists PHP 8.3 or greater. Make WordPress Core identifies PHP 7.4 or newer as the minimum supported baseline in 2026. Those statements describe WordPress support policy, not a guarantee that every third-party extension works on every release. Select one target version your host actually offers—such as PHP 8.3 or 8.4—and test against that exact version. Avoid treating “latest” as a test plan when your host may offer several minor releases with different behavior.

Check the support status of the current runtime
If the site is still on an older PHP release, it may be end of life and lack security fixes. A compatibility project should then include an upgrade path rather than an indefinite decision to remain on the old version. Record the old version so you can restore it temporarily if the host permits a rollback.
Back up before touching updates
WordPress’s official guidance starts with “Make a backup of your website.” Make a backup that can restore both the database and the complete fileset, including wp-content, uploaded media, themes, plugins and configuration files. A database-only export cannot restore a broken plugin file; a files-only copy cannot restore orders, settings or user changes stored in the database.
- Confirm the backup completed rather than merely being scheduled.
- Keep a copy outside the production server or in storage your host cannot overwrite during a rollback.
- Record the backup timestamp, the PHP version, the WordPress version and the extension versions that were active.
- Know the actual restore procedure and who can perform it before starting the PHP change.
A rollback plan should cover two separate actions: restoring the site’s files and database, and switching the hosting account back to the previous PHP version. A backup cannot by itself change the server runtime, and a PHP downgrade cannot undo database or file changes made after the upgrade.

Bring WordPress, themes and plugins up to date first
With the current PHP version still active, open Dashboard → Updates and update WordPress core, the active theme and plugins. Updating these components first gives you their latest compatibility declarations and fixes that may already address newer PHP behavior.
- Open Dashboard → Updates and note the versions currently installed.
- Apply available WordPress, theme and plugin updates one group at a time if the site is business-critical; that makes a regression easier to identify.
- After each group, load the front end and the main administration screens used by your team.
- Record any warnings, failed updates or new entries in the PHP error log before proceeding.
Do not combine an unplanned redesign, database migration or large configuration change with the PHP switch. Fewer simultaneous variables make a failure diagnosable and a rollback safer.
Inspect plugin and theme declarations
Where the declarations come from
WordPress plugin headers can declare Requires at least, Requires PHP and Requires Plugins. Core reads these fields when it validates whether an extension can run. The “Requires PHP” value is the minimum version claimed by the extension author, not a complete compatibility matrix.
How to use them as a first filter
- List every active plugin, the active theme and any must-use or custom extensions.
- Compare each declared minimum with your proposed target and with the current runtime.
- Flag extensions whose metadata is missing, unusually old, or lower than the target’s expected support level.
- Check dependency declarations so a required companion plugin is not left on an incompatible version.
If an extension requires a PHP version higher than the one currently running, WordPress may prevent activation and show a plugin_php_incompatible error. If its declaration says only PHP 7.4 while you plan to move to PHP 8.3, that tells you the minimum requirement but says nothing conclusive about PHP 8.3 behavior. You still need code analysis and runtime testing.
Scan the code against the target PHP release
Static compatibility analysis searches plugin and theme source for syntax, functions and patterns associated with PHP-version changes. Run the scan against the exact target version, not merely against “PHP 8” as a broad category.

Eli’s PHP Compatibility Scanner
The Eli’s PHP Compatibility Scanner listing says it checks installed plugins and themes—including premium and custom code—for PHP 7.4 through 8.4. It uses PHP_CodeSniffer with PHPCompatibility rules. That coverage is valuable when the site contains code that is not distributed through the ordinary WordPress directory, provided the scanner can read the installed files.
CompatNav
CompatNav’s listing describes checks for PHP 8.0 through 8.5 and reports possible breakages or deprecation notices. Its range may be useful when your host offers PHP 8.5 or when you want to compare findings across several targets. Verify that the version selected in the tool matches the version you intend to enable on the server.
What a static scan can and cannot tell you
| Question | Declarations in headers | Static code scanner | Runtime test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does the author state a minimum PHP version? | Yes, when the header is present | Usually not the primary purpose | No |
| Can it inspect premium or custom files? | Only their declared metadata | Yes, if the files are included in the scan | Yes, when the relevant feature is exercised |
| Can it find syntax or removed-function patterns? | No | Often, using version-specific rules | Only when execution reaches the affected code |
| Can it prove that checkout, forms or cron work? | No | No | Only through deliberate tests |
| Can it produce false positives or miss a defect? | Yes, because metadata may be incomplete | Yes | Yes, if a path is not tested |
WordPress cautions that compatibility checking can miss issues and flag false positives. Treat a finding as a lead to investigate, not an automatic verdict. Conversely, an empty report is not permission to skip staging and post-change checks.
Investigate every warning before changing PHP
Classify the finding
- Blocker: a parse error, removed function, incompatible extension requirement or failure in a critical path such as login or payment.
- Action required: a deprecation notice, risky API usage or code in a feature your site relies on but the scan cannot execute.
- Review: a pattern that may be a false positive, generated code, a compatibility shim or code that is never loaded on your site.
Open the file and line cited by the scanner, identify which extension owns it, and determine whether the code runs on the front end, in administration, through cron or only under a particular request. Save the report with the extension version and target PHP version so an author or developer can reproduce the issue.
Escalate or replace unsupported components
Contact the plugin or theme author with the exact PHP target, scanner output and reproducible steps. Check whether an update, documented compatibility release or configuration change exists. If an extension is abandoned, has no declared requirements, or fails a critical test, replace it or remove the feature before the PHP switch. Do not leave an inactive but vulnerable component installed merely because it is not currently enabled.

Handle custom code deliberately
Include child-theme code, snippets, mu-plugins and bespoke integrations in the scan. A dashboard plugin list may not show these files, and a normal update will not repair them. Have the code owner review any use of removed functions, changed parameter behavior, dynamic properties or other version-sensitive patterns reported for the target.
Build a staging or reversible test environment
The safest place to change PHP is a staging copy that mirrors production data and configuration closely enough to exercise real code. Protect copied customer data appropriately, and prevent the staging site from sending email, charging payment methods or being indexed publicly.
- Create the staging copy from the verified backup.
- Match the production WordPress, theme, plugin and configuration versions.
- Set staging to the proposed PHP version through the host’s control panel or support process.
- Clear relevant caches and run the scanner again if the staged files differ from production.
- Execute the site checks below, then review web-server and PHP logs for new warnings or fatal errors.
If staging is impossible, schedule a low-traffic maintenance window, confirm an immediate host-level PHP rollback, and keep the complete backup available. That is less protective than staging because real visitors can encounter the failure before you identify it.

Change PHP at the hosting level
PHP is selected by the hosting company, not by the WordPress plugin updater. WordPress’s documentation says the exact procedure depends on the host. Typical interfaces expose a PHP-version selector per domain, site or container; other hosts require a support request or a configuration change in a managed dashboard.
- Confirm the domain, site or container you are changing; hosts may manage several sites separately.
- Choose the tested target version, not an untested “latest” option.
- Apply the change during the approved maintenance window.
- Record the host’s confirmation and the effective version as reported by the website, not just the control panel.
- If the site fails, switch back to the prior version first, then restore files or the database only if the failure involved those changes.
Do not assume that changing a local development runtime changes production, or that updating a plugin changes PHP. They are separate operations controlled by different systems.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Verify the site after the PHP switch
Run checks in staging first and repeat the critical subset immediately after production changes. The following list is a practical coverage plan; WordPress does not publish a universal test script.
Public and administrative pages
- Open the home page, representative posts or products, archives, search and a page using the site’s main template.
- Log in, open the dashboard, edit and save a test item, and confirm media uploads and image transformations.
- Submit every important form, including validation errors and successful delivery paths.
Commerce and integrations
- Run a non-production checkout or test order if the site sells anything; verify cart, taxes, shipping, payment handoff and confirmation.
- Exercise REST and other API calls used by mobile apps, JavaScript features or external services.
- Trigger scheduled tasks and confirm cron jobs complete rather than accumulating in a queue.
Logs and background behavior
- Review PHP, web-server and WordPress debug logs for fatal errors, warnings and deprecations that were not present before.
- Check cache warm-up, search indexing, backups, outbound email and webhook delivery where those functions matter to the site.
- Compare response behavior and error rates with the pre-change baseline during the observation window.
Keep the old PHP version and backup available until these checks pass and the site has operated normally for a period appropriate to its traffic and scheduled jobs. A front page that loads once does not prove that overnight cron, a weekly form or a rarely used API endpoint works.
Common failure patterns and recovery
The site shows a white screen or HTTP 500
Use the host’s error log to identify the file and extension, then switch PHP back to the last known-good version if that action is available. If the error persists, disable the identified extension through recovery mode, file access or the host’s WordPress tools, and restore the verified backup when necessary. Fix or replace the extension before attempting the target version again.
A plugin will not activate
Read the exact requirement and the plugin_php_incompatible message. Either upgrade PHP to a version the plugin supports, install a compatible plugin release, or choose a replacement. Do not edit the header merely to bypass the check; that suppresses a warning without changing the code’s behavior.
The scanner reports many deprecations
Separate notices from fatal compatibility breaks, then test the affected features. Ask the author whether a compatibility release exists and have a developer review custom code. Suppressing notices can hide work that still needs to be completed and may turn into a hard failure in a later PHP release.
Nothing was reported, but a feature fails
Static analysis cannot see every runtime condition, generated query, remote response or rarely used branch. Capture the request, timestamps, logs and extension versions, reproduce it on staging, and escalate with that evidence. Expand the test matrix rather than assuming the scan was wrong or the PHP release is unusable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choosing a checking approach
| Approach | Best use | Coverage and limits | Rollback support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Header review | Fast inventory and minimum-version filtering | Reads declared requirements; misses undocumented runtime defects | None by itself |
| Eli’s PHP Compatibility Scanner | Installed, premium and custom code in PHP 7.4–8.4 targets | PHP_CodeSniffer/PHPCompatibility findings; can miss issues and flag false positives | None by itself |
| CompatNav | Sites targeting PHP 8.0–8.5 | Reports possible breakages and deprecations; still requires human review and runtime tests | None by itself |
| Staging runtime test | Confirming real workflows on the exact target | Finds only the paths you exercise; requires a representative copy | Safe when staging is isolated |
| Production change with backup | When staging is unavailable | Real traffic is exposed to undiscovered defects | Requires a tested backup and host-level PHP downgrade |
Use these approaches together: declarations identify obvious blockers, scanners prioritize code review, and a reversible runtime test validates the workflows that matter to your site.
A repeatable pre-update checklist
- Identify the current web PHP version and the exact target version.
- Confirm that the target aligns with WordPress’s current recommendation of PHP 8.3 or greater, while checking each extension independently.
- Make and verify a complete files-and-database backup.
- Update WordPress, the active theme and plugins from Dashboard → Updates.
- Record versions, dependencies and every declared “Requires PHP” value.
- Scan installed, premium, custom and must-use code against the target.
- Investigate every warning; obtain author fixes or replace abandoned components.
- Test the target on staging or confirm a host-level rollback procedure.
- Exercise public pages, login, editing, forms, checkout, cron, APIs, media and logs.
- Change production PHP through the host, verify the effective version and keep the rollback materials until observation is complete.
Bottom line
Compatibility checking works best as a chain, not a single plugin report. Read declarations, scan the real code, test the exact PHP target, and maintain both a verified backup and a host-level rollback path. WordPress currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, but the safe date for your site is the one on which every critical extension and workflow has passed your checks.
