To see the version of the running MySQL server, connect to it and run SELECT VERSION();. For a typical local installation, use mysql -u root -p, enter the password, then execute the query. Do not substitute mysql --version unless you specifically want the command-line client version.

First decide which MySQL version you need
A Linux host can have several different version values at the same time. The client program used in your shell, the server executable stored on disk, the package installed by the operating system, and the database process currently accepting connections are separate things. They can disagree after an upgrade, a partial installation, or a service restart that has not happened yet.

If your question is “what version is the database serving requests right now?”, use the SQL function. Every other command answers a narrower question.
Check the running server from the MySQL shell
1. Open a local MySQL session
- Open an SSH session or local terminal on the Linux server.
- Run
mysql -u root -p. Replacerootwith a database account that can log in; a non-root account is preferable for routine checks. - At the password prompt, type the account password. Nothing is displayed while you type.
- When the prompt changes to
mysql>, you are connected to a server instance.
2. Run the definitive query
At the MySQL prompt, enter:
SELECT VERSION();Terminate the statement with a semicolon. The returned string is the server version for the instance that accepted your connection. This is the value to record when checking compatibility, documenting an incident, or confirming that an upgrade reached the active database.

3. Exit cleanly
Use exit, quit, or q to leave the client. The query itself does not change data.
Run the check non-interactively
For a shell script, monitoring probe, or quick SSH command, pass the query with -e:

You can specify another account, host, socket, or TCP port when the server is not the local default:
mysql -h db.example.internal -P 3306 -u app_check -p -e 'SELECT VERSION();'Use the host and port that your service actually uses. A successful query proves which endpoint answered; it does not prove that every MySQL instance on the machine has the same version.
Avoid placing a password directly in a command line. Shell history, process listings, and monitoring tools can expose it. Let -p prompt interactively or use an appropriately protected MySQL client configuration supplied by your distribution’s security policy.
Use built-in status and variable reports
STATUS;
After logging in, run:
STATUS;The status report includes the server version together with connection information such as the current host, database, protocol, and character set. It is useful when you suspect that a client connected to an unexpected socket, host, or port.

SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%version%';
Run:
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%version%';This lists variables whose names contain “version”. It can expose the server’s version value and related build or protocol variables in one result. Treat the output as diagnostic detail; for a single canonical value, SELECT VERSION(); is clearer.
The deprecated sys.version view
Older instructions may tell you to query a version view in the MySQL sys schema. The MySQL 8.4 documentation marks that view as deprecated and directs users to VERSION(). New scripts should use the function instead of building a dependency on the deprecated view.
Understand client, server binary, process, and package versions
Client version: mysql --version
From the Linux shell, run either:
mysql --version
mysql -VThe command prints the version of the mysql client program and exits. It does not contact a database, so it works without credentials and even when no server is running. A client can be newer or older than the server it connects to; therefore this output alone cannot answer “what version of MySQL is running?”
Server binary version: mysqld --version
To inspect the server executable installed on disk, run:
mysqld --version
mysqld -VThis reports the binary found through your PATH (or the path you invoke explicitly). It does not query a running process. If administrators upgraded the binary but have not restarted the service, mysqld --version can show a newer value than the server currently serving connections.
Server details through mysqladmin
The administration client can query a live server from the shell:

mysqladmin -u root -p versionAfter authentication, it prints server information including the version string. This is convenient when you want a shell command rather than an interactive SQL session, but it still reports the endpoint reached by that connection, not every installed binary.
Check the version installed by the Linux package manager
Debian and Ubuntu
On Debian-family systems, the documented package check is:
dpkg -s mysql-server | grep VersionThis reads package metadata and prints the package version recorded by dpkg. It does not require a database login and does not verify that the package’s service is running. A distribution may use a different package name for a vendor repository, a client-only installation, or a MariaDB installation, so an empty result means “that exact package name was not found,” not necessarily “no database software exists.”
RHEL, CentOS, and Fedora
For an installation using the MySQL Community Server RPM, run:
rpm -qa | grep mysql-community-serverThe result is the installed RPM name and version. As with dpkg, package metadata describes what is installed, not what process is currently listening. Package names differ between repositories and MySQL-compatible products, so inspect the full package list if this exact pattern returns nothing.
Why package and server values can differ
A package update can install a new executable without immediately replacing a running process. Conversely, a manually installed binary may be active even though the package database contains an older distribution package. Compare the package result, mysqld --version, and SELECT VERSION(); when auditing an upgrade.

Troubleshoot common failures
mysql: command not found
This means the shell cannot find the client on its PATH; it does not prove that MySQL is absent. Use the installation’s full executable path if you know it, or ask the system administrator where the client was installed. Once the correct binary is located, run that path with --version and use the same path for the login command.
“Access denied”
The server was reached, but the account or authentication method was rejected. Confirm the username, password, host option, and authentication policy. If local administrative access is intentionally configured through the operating system rather than a password, use the approved administrative procedure for that installation instead of repeatedly guessing credentials. Do not weaken authentication just to obtain a version string.
Socket or connection errors
A socket error can mean that no server is listening at the client’s default socket, the service uses a nonstandard socket, or you are connecting to a different installation. Check the endpoint used by the application and pass its socket, host, or port explicitly. Then run SELECT VERSION(); on that connection and use STATUS; to confirm where you landed.
Several MySQL instances
Development, staging, containerized, and production instances can coexist on one Linux host. A local command without -h may use a Unix socket while the application uses TCP or a container network. Test each intended endpoint separately and label the resulting version with its host, port, socket, or service name.

The server daemon may not be on the interactive user’s PATH, or the machine may contain only a client. Locate the service’s configured executable through your normal service-management and packaging procedures, then run that binary with --version. Do not infer the running version from a similarly named client command.
Interpret the version string correctly
Major, minor, and patch components
A result such as 8.4.9 is a version string, not a promise that every compatible product uses identical release numbering. Record the complete value, including any suffix shown by the server, because downstream tools may distinguish maintenance releases or vendor builds.

MySQL versus compatible server software
Linux hosts may run MySQL or another product that implements the MySQL protocol. The commands above are MySQL-oriented, and command names, paths, package names, and version formats can vary by distribution and product. If the returned string identifies a different server family, consult that product’s documentation before applying MySQL-specific upgrade or compatibility assumptions.
C API version numbers
Software written against the MySQL C API can call mysql_get_client_version(). That developer API returns an integer in XXYYZZ form: for example, client version 8.4.9 is represented as 080409. This is an API value for compiled programs, not a shell command and not the version of the server process.

Automate a reliable version check
For an audit script, make the target and the meaning of the result explicit. A minimal check is:
mysql --batch --skip-column-names -u app_check -p -e 'SELECT VERSION();'The batch and column options make the output easier for another program to parse. Keep credentials outside the script, restrict the account’s privileges, and record the endpoint alongside the returned value. If the script is intended to verify a running service after deployment, do not replace the SQL query with mysql --version; that would test only the client packaged on the machine running the script.
For a complete upgrade verification, collect three observations in order:
- Query the endpoint used by the application with
SELECT VERSION();. - Check the active server binary with
mysqld --versionif you have filesystem access. - Record the operating-system package version with the appropriate
dpkgorrpmcommand.
Differences are useful evidence: they can reveal an unrestarted service, an unexpected socket, a second installation, or a package that is not the source of the active binary.

- Write down whether you need the running server, client, binary, or package version.
- For the running database, connect to the same host and port or socket used by the application.
- Run
SELECT VERSION();and save the complete returned string. - Use
STATUS;when you need to confirm connection details. - Use
mysql --versiononly for the command-line client. - Use
mysqld --versionfor the server executable on disk, remembering that it may not be the running process. - Use
dpkgorrpmto document package-manager state. - Label results with the endpoint, distribution, date, and account or service context.
- Do not expose passwords in shell history, scripts, or process listings.
When these checks disagree, trust the query made against the exact database endpoint your workload uses for questions about current behavior. Use the binary and package results to explain how that endpoint got there and what will run after the next restart.
