To check whether memory is running in dual-channel mode, use CPU-Z’s Memory tab and inspect its Channel field. These are separate checks: Task Manager is the quick built-in overview; CPU-Z reports the channel mode and individual module details.
Check how much RAM is installed in Windows
-
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
-
Select Performance, then Memory.
-
Read the memory total shown on the page. Task Manager also displays memory use and other details. Its layout can vary slightly between Windows versions; Microsoft describes the Performance tab as providing views of system resources, including memory (Microsoft Learn, updated February 12, 2026).
This gives you the Windows memory summary without installing another utility. It is not the place to confirm the channel configuration.
Check whether RAM is running in dual-channel mode
-
Download CPU-Z from CPUID’s official CPU-Z page, rather than a third-party download site. CPUID describes CPU-Z for Windows as freeware that gathers information about key system components.

-
Run CPU-Z and open the Memory tab.
-
Find the Channel field. Check whether it indicates dual-channel operation. The precise presentation may differ by CPU-Z version.
CPU-Z’s Memory view reports the current memory configuration. Its SPD tab can show information about detected modules, such as their specifications. SPD or an advertised XMP profile does not by itself establish the speed at which the memory is currently operating; check the current configuration rather than assuming the kit is running at its advertised rating.
If CPU-Z does not indicate dual-channel
Two installed memory sticks do not, by themselves, prove that the system is operating in dual-channel mode. The correct module arrangement depends on the computer or motherboard design.

Identify the exact PC or motherboard model, then consult its manual for supported memory configurations and recommended DIMM slots. A manufacturer’s dual-channel guide likewise directs users to CPU-Z’s Memory view and the board manual if the mode is not shown as dual (manufacturer dual-channel guide, PDF dated January 4, 2019).

There is no universal slot rule that applies safely to every PC. Follow the instructions for your model rather than moving modules based on a generic slot pattern.
