On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The installed system software version is shown on that screen. Stop there if you only need to identify the version; the update controls are in a different menu. Sony’s “Up to date” message means the console believes the latest available update is installed, but it does not show whether that version is compatible with any jailbreak.
Use the Console Information screen, not the update command
The official, read-only route for identifying a PS5’s software version is:

- From the PS5 home screen, select Settings (the gear icon).
- Open System.
- Select System Software.
- Choose Console Information.
Your system software version appears on that page. Sony documents this path in its instructions for checking PlayStation system software information: PlayStation Support: How to check for updates on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles.
This is a check, not an update. Do not select System Software Update and Settings if your immediate goal is only to record the installed version. That separate menu can search for or install an update.

What the Console Information page shows
The page is useful beyond the version number. Sony says it also displays the PS5 console name, IP address and MAC address. Those network identifiers are not needed to identify the software release.
Record only what you need
Write down the complete system software version exactly as displayed, including every digit and punctuation mark. A partial number, a transcription error or a cropped photograph can make later verification impossible. Record the date and time as well if you are keeping a compatibility log, because a console can be updated after you check it.
Protect network details in screenshots
If you post a photograph or screenshot for help, cover the console name, IP address and MAC address first. Those details are visible on the same screen and are unnecessary for a version question. A text description containing only the software version is usually sufficient.
“Firmware” versus “system software”
Many jailbreak discussions call the number a “firmware version.” Sony’s interface and support documentation use system software version. In this context, those phrases may refer to the same number, but quote the label shown on your console so there is no ambiguity.

Do not confuse checking with updating

The distinction matters because installing a newer release can change the version you were trying to document. The version check itself does not download or install software.
What “Up to date” means—and what it does not mean
Sony says that the text “Up to date” beneath the version means the latest version is installed. That is a statement about Sony’s update status, not a security or jailbreak assessment. It does not establish that a particular exploit works, that a jailbreak is available, or that a procedure is safe for your console.
Conversely, a console that does not show “Up to date” is not automatically suitable for a jailbreak. The message may simply indicate that Sony has identified a newer official release. Treat the status label and the numeric version as separate pieces of information: the number identifies what is installed, while the status describes its relationship to Sony’s current update service.

Should you update before installing a jailbreak?
There is no universal answer in the official material. Sony’s support page recommends installing the latest update and states: SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.
That recommendation is Sony’s position on maintaining the console; it is not evidence that the latest release supports a jailbreak.

The official pages used for the version check do not establish which PS5 versions are exploitable, whether a particular release has a working jailbreak, or whether updating helps or harms a specific exploit. Do not infer compatibility from the “Up to date” label, from the age of your console, or from a version number alone.
A cautious decision sequence
- Read and record the current version first. Use Console Information and preserve the exact number before changing anything.
- Identify the claim you are evaluating. A third-party guide should name a precise system software version, the required hardware or browser conditions, and the date its information was verified. If it does not, the claim is not specific enough to make a decision.
- Check current, independently verified compatibility information. Sony’s support pages explain how to view and update software; they do not maintain a jailbreak compatibility list. Treat an unverified compatibility claim as unconfirmed.
- Decide whether an official update is required for your normal use. Updates can contain security and operational changes. If you need the console for ordinary online or supported features, weigh that need separately from any modification project.
- Only then consider changing the version. If you update, return to Console Information afterward and record the new number. If you do not update, avoid accidentally selecting an update command while you are still gathering information.
This process keeps two different questions separate: what Sony recommends for a supported console, and what a particular third-party compatibility claim says about a modification. Neither question can be answered by the status label alone.
Does your PS5 version support a jailbreak?
The number on the Console Information page is necessary for a version-specific discussion, but it is not a guarantee. Compatibility can depend on the exact release, the method being discussed and other conditions that are not listed on Sony’s version-check page. The official sources here do not provide a compatibility table, an exploit list or a promise that any version will work.
How to evaluate a compatibility statement
- It should identify the exact system software version, not just “old” or “new” firmware.
- It should state when the information was last verified and distinguish a proof of concept from a repeatable public procedure.
- It should explain prerequisites and limitations without asking you to assume that every PS5 model or region behaves identically.
- It should warn you what an update, reset or failed attempt could change before you act.
If a source cannot meet those basic standards, keep the console at the version you recorded while you seek better information. That is an information-preservation step, not a claim that the version is exploitable.

What Sony says about updates and unofficial update data
Sony says system software updates, including security updates, are released from time to time and recommends installing the latest update. Its update guidance also warns that using update data from other sources or methods may impair the console’s operation and can affect warranty and repair services. That warning is relevant when a guide tells you to obtain an update file elsewhere or use a method that is not Sony’s documented process. The warning does not determine whether a jailbreak works; it explains the operational and service risks Sony associates with unofficial update methods. Do not represent an unofficial file as an official Sony release, and do not assume that a file labelled with a familiar version number is genuine.

Before modifying a console, read the agreement that applies to your account and location and consider the practical consequences for support, repairs, online services and data. Checking a version in Console Information is simply a normal settings operation; it does not itself bypass a security mechanism.

A precise pre-installation record you can keep
A short record reduces mistakes when you later compare information from different sources. Keep it offline or in a private note rather than posting the Console Information screen publicly.
- Console: PS5.
- System software version: copy the complete value from Console Information.
- Date checked: use the date on which you read the screen.
- Time checked: include the time if you are tracking changes during troubleshooting.
- Status text: note whether the page displayed “Up to date.”
- Change history: if you later install an official update, record the new version and the date separately rather than overwriting the old entry.
Do not add the IP address, MAC address or console name to a public compatibility post unless a support professional specifically needs one of them. They are identifying details, not jailbreak-version evidence.
Troubleshooting the version check
You opened an update screen by mistake
Back out without confirming an update, then return to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Reading the information page is the step that answers the version question. If an update has already been installed, record the new version shown there; do not rely on an earlier note.

Start again from the PS5 home screen and follow the menu hierarchy exactly. The version-check page is under System Software, not under the separate update controls. Menu language or accessibility settings can change the wording displayed on screen, so match the function—console information—rather than relying on an English label alone.
Your photograph is hard to read
Return to the page and transcribe the number directly. If you share an image, crop or obscure the console name, IP address and MAC address while leaving the version text legible. A clear text transcription is preferable to a public image containing network information.
A guide asks for a different number
Ask whether it means PS5 system software, a game version, a controller version or another identifier. Sony’s Console Information page supplies the system software version. Do not substitute a model number, serial number or game patch number for it.

A safe order of operations
- Open Console Information and copy the complete system software version.
- Record the date, time and whether “Up to date” appears.
- Close Settings without selecting an update command if you are only documenting the version.
- Evaluate any compatibility statement against that exact version and its verification date.
- Read Sony’s update guidance and the licence terms that apply to your region before deciding whether to change the software.
- If the version changes, repeat the check and create a new dated record.
This sequence gives you an accurate starting point without implying that a particular PS5 release is exploitable. It also prevents the most common avoidable error: updating before you have written down the version you intended to investigate.
