FFprobe can tell you whether your local video or capture input opens and contains the audio and video you expect. It cannot, by itself, confirm that YouTube accepts your stream key or that your encoder can reach YouTube Live. To test the full path, publish a short stream to the intended YouTube event, then verify its preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
What FFprobe can—and cannot—check
FFprobe inspects media: it reports properties such as streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and audio layout. It does not validate a YouTube ingest URL or key, test your firewall or TLS path, or establish that viewers can play the event. A successful local probe is a useful first check, not a complete YouTube connectivity test. FFprobe documentation
For an actual ingest check, the decisive practical test is a publish to the intended event followed by confirmation in YouTube Live Control Room. A TCP connection or RTMP handshake alone is not evidence of a healthy audio-and-video feed.
Prepare the YouTube event and protect its key
- Open the intended scheduled or test stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event into your encoder. Use the current event-specific endpoint; do not rely on a fixed URL copied from an article. YouTube encoder setup
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in public command history, support tickets, screen recordings, or logs. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- For low-risk validation, use a private or unlisted test stream when appropriate for your channel, and set it up in advance so you can inspect the preview before an event.
Check the local media input with FFprobe
For a video file
Run this against the actual file you plan to send:
ffprobe -hide_banner -v error -show_format -show_streams input.mp4Check that the expected video and audio streams appear. Note their codecs, dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, and channel layout as relevant to your production. If FFprobe cannot open the source or a required stream is missing, resolve that local file or input problem before investigating YouTube.

For a live capture device
Capture devices use platform-specific input syntax, and support depends on how the installed FFmpeg build was compiled. Do not assume the file command above applies to a camera, microphone, capture card, or scene. Use the device input format and options supported by your operating system and build, then inspect that input with FFprobe.
Publish a short test stream to YouTube
Use representative content
Choose a short test that exercises the setup you intend to use: include moving video and audio if your production uses both. A generated test pattern can check an encode-and-ingest path, but it will not test your camera, microphone, capture card, or production scene. Use the event’s URL and key
This is a generic FFmpeg publishing pattern, not a guaranteed command for every operating system, build, codec setup, or current YouTube endpoint:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'Replace the example address with the exact server URL and key from the event’s Live Control Room settings, and check that your FFmpeg build includes the required protocol and codecs. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing with FLV output; its documentation describes the default RTMP port as 1935, but YouTube’s current event configuration is authoritative. Test RTMPS with the secure endpoint
RTMPS is RTMP over a secure TLS/SSL connection. If you want to use RTMPS, copy that endpoint from Live Control Room and confirm your encoder supports it; changing only the URL scheme is not enough if the client or endpoint is incompatible. For an SSL error, YouTube advises checking that both the protocol and server are RTMPS and trying port 443. A timeout can also mean the URL is wrong or the encoder lacks RTMPS support. Confirm receipt in Live Control Room
- Start the short test publish and wait for the event preview to appear.
- Check stream-health status and messages. Verify that the preview has both the expected audio and visible motion; a connection attempt alone is not enough.
- When validating the full viewing experience, also check the event’s viewer/watch page. A preview confirms receipt sufficient to render, but does not rule out later playback, audio, or quality issues.
- Before the real event, compare the total outbound bitrate with available upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; include primary and backup encoders where applicable, and check outbound rather than download speed. Choose the test that matches the suspected failure

Troubleshoot common results
FFprobe cannot read the input
This points first to the local source, file, device permissions, or FFmpeg input configuration—not a YouTube network failure. Confirm the path and that the file or capture device is available, then inspect it again.

FFprobe succeeds, but the publisher cannot connect
Check the event-specific server URL and protocol, confirm the key belongs to that event, and review outbound network, firewall or proxy policy, encoder logs, and protocol support in the installed FFmpeg build. RTMPS reports an SSL error or times out
Retrieve the RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room and verify the client supports RTMPS. For an SSL error, check that both the selected protocol and server are RTMPS; try port 443 if the endpoint otherwise appears correct. For a timeout, verify the URL and protocol as well: the symptom alone does not identify which network or configuration component failed. YouTube RTMPS guidance

The key is rejected
Make sure you copied the key for the correct event. If necessary, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder; keep the replacement secret. YouTube encoder setup
The preview appears, but quality is unstable
Check upload capacity against the aggregate stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended headroom, then review source and encoder quality and the Live Control Room health messages. A visible preview does not prove that the stream has enough bandwidth for stable delivery. YouTube streaming tips
