Choose a managed playlist-streaming service if you want to upload prerecorded videos, arrange a loop, and avoid operating cloud infrastructure. Choose a configurable cloud media platform if you have the engineering capacity to build and monitor your own pipeline or need custom processing. In either case, verify recovery behavior, archive handling, content limits, and the full cost before committing: a service appearing in YouTube’s encoder directory does not establish that it meets those requirements.
Start with the two kinds of cloud service
Managed playlist streaming
A managed service handles much of the workflow for prerecorded video: you provide media and configure a stream or playlist, while the vendor operates the streaming service. This is the more direct route for a creator who wants browser-based controls rather than servers, media pipelines, and monitoring to maintain. YouTube’s encoder directory identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams. The directory is evidence that YouTube recognizes them as encoder options—not a comparative endorsement or proof of their current prices, uptime, limits, or recovery behavior. Configurable cloud media platforms
A cloud media platform gives you building blocks to configure an encoding or live-streaming workflow. AWS Elemental MediaLive appears in YouTube’s verified software encoder directory. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is another documented cloud option, but its session and billing behavior matter for continuous operation. This approach can suit a team that needs custom processing and can own the architecture, automation, monitoring, and incident response. Compare candidates against operational requirements
Do not choose on the word “cloud” alone. Ask vendors to document the points that determine whether an always-on playlist is practical for your channel.

Check each vendor’s current documentation and terms before deciding; do not infer those details from YouTube’s directory listing.

Complete YouTube setup before choosing a workflow
- Enable livestreaming. If this is your first time, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube to enable the feature. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Configure the encoder or service. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the chosen service’s YouTube connection settings, then start transmission. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Plan the archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour stream should have an explicit archive or segment plan instead of relying on one automatic archive.
Protocol requirements depend on the handoff you use. For HLS ingestion specifically, Google’s developer documentation calls for muxed M2TS audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, up to 60 fps, a closed GOP, HTTPS, and persistent connections; an HLS playlist may have no more than five outstanding media segments. These are HLS protocol requirements, not settings every managed service exposes or every creator needs to configure. YouTube HLS ingestion documentation
Model total cost, not just encoding
Cloud charges can include more than encoding. AWS’s published example estimates $69.74 for an AWS production and distribution architecture serving approximately 1,000 viewers during a one-hour 540p event in US East (N. Virginia): $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for distribution. AWS describes the assumptions as intentionally straightforward, says they may overstate actual costs, and recommends checking current service pricing. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing is based on active channel time and input/output resolution and codec. It has a ten-minute minimum and rounds active duration up to the next minute. Google documents that a Live Stream API session lasts 24 hours and that a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in an active state. For a 24/7 design, verify how restart and reconnection are automated and monitored; an always-on label does not remove the need to understand session limits. Choose by who will own failures
Choose a managed service when
- You want to upload prerecorded videos and configure a loop without building cloud infrastructure.
- You value vendor-operated recovery and support, and can verify the service’s documented behavior for your use case.
- Your main requirement is continuous YouTube playback rather than custom encoding or distribution workflows.
Choose a configurable cloud stack when
- You have engineering capacity to configure and monitor media channels, session lifetimes, storage, and billing.
- You need custom media processing or distribution and can design recovery for interruptions and scheduled restarts.
- You can forecast the resolution, hours, region, stream count, and any audience delivery costs that apply to your architecture.
Troubleshoot common selection and setup failures
- Livestreaming is not available yet: First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Complete the YouTube setup and wait for enablement before treating an unavailable stream as an encoder fault.
- The encoder connects but YouTube does not receive a feed: Recheck that the correct stream URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream are entered in the encoder. Regenerate or replace exposed keys in YouTube rather than leaving a shared key in circulation.
- The stream stops around a session boundary: Check the service’s session lifetime and restart policy. For Google Cloud Live Stream API, account for the documented 24-hour session behavior and verify automated restart and reconnect handling.
- The automatic archive is shorter than the broadcast: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. Set an explicit segmentation or recording plan for a longer continuous broadcast.
- The cloud bill exceeds the encoder estimate: Separate encoding from storage, transfer, and distribution; check the region, resolution, active-time rules, and audience-delivery assumptions in the estimate.
