Choose a co-op survival game by checking four things first: how many people usually play, whether everyone’s platform and game edition work together, whether the world must stay online when the host is away, and what kind of survival loop your group wants. Valheim, Minecraft, and Don’t Starve Together each suit a different mix of those needs; none is a universal best pick.
Start with your usual group size
Count the people who will actually join a typical session, not everyone on the invitation list. Player caps and couch co-op support are specific to a game, edition, and service.
| Game and scope | Documented group support | What that means for a group |
|---|---|---|
| Valheim | 1–10 players, according to Iron Gate Studio’s 2026 Valheim 1.0 FAQ. | A fit to consider for a group of up to 10, subject to the chosen session or server setup. |
| Minecraft Realms | Up to 10 players at a time on Realms, according to Mojang/Microsoft’s 2026 edition comparison. | Realms also allow an unlimited number of friends to join, but that is not the same as having them all play simultaneously; the simultaneous limit is 10. |
| Minecraft console split-screen | Up to four players on one screen, according to Mojang/Microsoft’s 2026 edition comparison. | A practical option when everyone is sharing a compatible console locally. |
| Don’t Starve Together: Console Edition (Xbox) | 2–6 players in local or online co-op, according to the Xbox listing. | This count applies to the Xbox console listing; check the listing for the platform and edition you plan to use. |
Check platform, edition, and cross-play before buying
Make a list of each player’s platform and the exact edition they own or intend to buy. A game title alone does not guarantee that everyone can join the same session.
Minecraft
Cross-play depends on edition. Mojang’s official comparison says Java cross-play includes Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock cross-play includes Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and mobile. Check that players are using editions that can connect to one another rather than assuming every Minecraft version shares a multiplayer pool. The official friends and multiplayer page also describes console Bedrock couch co-op.

Valheim
Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ says cross-play will work between all platforms. Its cross-play FAQ explains that players on different platforms can join using a shared join code. If cross-play is essential, verify current platform availability and the exact build before purchase.
Don’t Starve Together
The cited player count is for Don’t Starve Together: Console Edition on Xbox. Do not assume its 2–6-player listing establishes the same support or cross-play rules for every other platform or edition.

- SURVIVE THE AMAZON: Manage food, ammunition and health as your team plunges into the jungle in search of the lost explorer Percy Fawcett and the road to El Dorado.

Decide whether the world should persist without its host
If one person normally starts the game, ask what happens when that person is unavailable. A player-hosted session and a persistent server are different arrangements.
Valheim: player-hosted or dedicated server
Iron Gate’s FAQ says a player can create a public or private peer-to-peer session. For a persistent world, it points players to the Valheim Dedicated Server application on Steam. A dedicated setup involves extra configuration, and Iron Gate says it does not provide official servers or have access to player saves. If continuity matters more than setup simplicity, agree in advance who will manage the server and backups.

Minecraft: Realms
Mojang describes Realms as private servers run by Microsoft on its friends and multiplayer page. This can suit a group that wants a shared private world without relying on one player to host each session. Remember that the Realms figure above is a simultaneous player limit, not a limit on how many friends may join the Realm.
Don’t Starve Together: check the exact hosting details
The reviewed Xbox listing confirms private games and local or online co-op, but does not establish whether a world stays available when its usual host is offline. If persistent access is a requirement, confirm the current hosting behavior for the exact platform before settling on it.

Match the survival loop to your group
Player count and connectivity tell you whether a game can work; the game’s rhythm tells you whether your group is likely to want to keep playing it. Official descriptions establish the activities and framing below, not a comparative judgment about difficulty or enjoyment.

Choose Don’t Starve Together for wilderness survival
The Xbox describes Don’t Starve Together: Console Edition as wilderness survival centered on gathering resources, crafting, and cooperation. Its framing can help a group decide whether that survival focus suits the mood they want.
Account for local play and platform subscriptions
For couch co-op, the documented figure here is Minecraft console split-screen for up to four players, according to Mojang/Microsoft’s 2026 edition comparison. Xbox lists Don’t Starve Together: Console Edition for 2–6 local players. These are different setups: check that everyone has the required controllers and that the precise console edition supports the arrangement you want.
Xbox says online multiplayer for Don’t Starve Together: Console Edition requires a qualifying Game Pass subscription. Subscription terms and game prices can change, so check the current store and service requirements for your region before buying. Do not treat console online requirements as evidence about another platform.

- Write down the normal attendance. Compare it with the player limit for the exact game, edition, and service.
- Confirm every player’s platform and edition. For Minecraft, distinguish Java from Bedrock; for any title, verify cross-play rather than relying on the game name alone.
- Choose a hosting model. Decide whether a player can host sessions or whether the group needs a persistent world that can be accessed when that player is away.
- Pick the loop. Lean toward Valheim for exploration and boss progression, Minecraft for open-ended sandbox survival, or Don’t Starve Together for resource-focused wilderness survival.
- Check the practical requirements. Confirm local-play support, controllers, subscriptions, and current regional store availability before anyone pays.
For a cross-platform group of up to 10, Valheim has the clearest documented combination here of a 1–10-player cap, cross-play, and player-hosted or dedicated-server options. For a group that wants a flexible sandbox, Minecraft offers edition-dependent cross-play, private Realms, and console split-screen. For Xbox groups seeking local or online wilderness survival, Don’t Starve Together: Console Edition lists 2–6 players; verify its hosting behavior and subscription requirements for your setup.
