Closest alternatives for finding word connections
| Game | How it works | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Categories | Sort 16 words into four hidden groups on a daily 4×4 board, according to Puzzle Theory. | Players who want to group a supplied set of words directly. |
| Pinpoint | Guess the category linking a set of words, with five clues revealed progressively, according to LinkedIn. | Players who enjoy association but prefer to infer the answer from clues. |
Puzzle Theory Categories: the closest match
Puzzle Theory Categories uses the most familiar structure for a Connections fan: a board of 16 words that must be sorted into four hidden groups. Puzzle Theory describes a daily 4×4 board, four allowed mistakes, a timer and a “one away” hint. It also lists an Expert 5×5 mode for a larger board.
The publisher says the daily board is free and playable in a browser without an account. Puzzle Theory describes the board as releasing at 00:00 UTC. Its Pro members can replay the last 30 daily challenges; that archive access is separate from the free daily game.
LinkedIn Pinpoint: connections revealed through clues
LinkedIn Pinpoint asks players to identify a category shared by a set of words. Rather than presenting a full board to sort, it reveals five clues one at a time and challenges players to solve with as few revealed as possible. That shift makes it a useful alternative if you like spotting a common idea but want the puzzle to unfold gradually.

LinkedIn says its games are playable by members and non-members, and that new games arrive daily at midnight Pacific Time. Its Pinpoint page also describes score sharing, streaks and leaderboards, so it may suit players who want to compare results with others.
Other daily word puzzles if you want a change of mechanic
These options offer a daily word-puzzle habit, but they are not direct substitutes for sorting words into categories.
Rank #2
| Game | Core mechanic | How it differs from Connections |
|---|---|---|
| ZigZag | Trace themed words across a letter grid. | Find words in a grid rather than group a list. |
| Lexicon | Deduce a word using correct, present and absent letter feedback, without positional clues. | Use letter feedback to solve a word instead of identifying categories. |
| Quintle | Guess a daily five-letter word. | Focus on a single word and its letters. |
Puzzle Theory describes ZigZag, Lexicon and Quintle as daily games. Choose one if the part you want to keep is the short daily challenge, not Connections’ grouping task.
LinkedIn’s catalog also includes Crossclimb, a trivia word ladder where neighboring words differ by one letter, and Wend, which asks you to connect letters to find hidden words while using each letter once. Its other listed daily puzzles include Queens, Tango, Zip, Mini Sudoku and Patches; those broaden the selection beyond word games.

Check the daily schedule and access details
The stated release times come from the publishers: Puzzle Theory says Categories releases at 00:00 UTC, while LinkedIn says its new games arrive at midnight Pacific Time. Those are different time zones, and schedules or access terms may change. Puzzle Theory describes Categories’ daily board as free without signup and its recent replay archive as a Pro feature; LinkedIn says members and non-members can play its games. Check each publisher’s current game page for the terms that apply when you play.
These descriptions establish the games’ formats and stated features, not a head-to-head ranking based on comparative playtesting. The best fit depends on whether you want direct grouping, progressive clues or a different word mechanic.
