How to Choose a Composer for an Indie Game: A Practical Hiring Guide

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a composer by matching the game’s musical identity, interactive-audio needs, production scope, schedule, working style and rights—not by picking the cheapest per-minute quote or the most impressive reel. Start with a written brief, compare finalists on identical deliverables, test their game-audio workflow, and put ownership or licensing, revisions and every intended use in the contract.

What the right composer must deliver

Game music is both a creative voice and a production system. A composer may need to write a memorable theme, supply seamless loops, build layers that react to gameplay, export stems, document implementation and revise cues while the game changes. Those are different skills from writing a strong standalone track.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The best choice is therefore the person whose sound fits your game and whose process can deliver the agreed music, files and rights on your schedule. A general portfolio, marketplace rating or single showreel cannot establish all of that. Evaluate six things together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Musical fit: Does the writing support your setting, characters, pacing and emotional goals?
  • Game experience: Has the candidate delivered music under interactive, technical and milestone constraints?
  • Implementation ability: Can they create loops, transitions, layers, stems and engine-ready files, or work smoothly with your audio implementer?
  • Scope and price: Are both proposals pricing the same cues, versions, recordings, revisions and support?
  • Communication and availability: Can the composer attend reviews and meet the dates when your team needs decisions?
  • Rights: Will your agreement cover release, updates, downloadable content, marketing, ports and any soundtrack use you plan?

If any one of these is unknown, your quote comparison is incomplete.

Write the music brief before contacting composers

A short, specific brief saves time and makes bids comparable. Describe the game’s genre, setting, audience, art direction and emotional tone. Explain what the player should feel during exploration, combat, menus, failure, victory and other important states. Include a few reference tracks or a mood board, but label them as directional references rather than material to copy.

List the cues and their functions

Estimate the number of cues and what each must do. A “main theme” might mean one linear track, several exploration variations, a combat loop and a stinger system. Write down expected duration, loop behavior, intensity states, transition points and whether a cue needs alternate versions for a boss, biome, character or platform.

Define the technical environment

State the engine and any audio middleware, target platforms, delivery format, sample rate, channel layout, memory limits and naming conventions. Say whether the composer is expected to implement the music or only deliver assets. For adaptive music, describe the actual gameplay transitions and layers: for example, an exploration bed that adds percussion when enemies detect the player, then moves to a combat layer and resolves on victory. A composer can price and schedule that accurately only when the required states are known.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the commercial frame

Give a working budget range, target dates, review milestones and who approves music. Separate composition from related work such as live musicians, recording, editing, mixing, mastering, sound design, dialogue or implementation. If you are uncertain about the final cue count, identify a base scope and a priced change process instead of implying unlimited additions.

Where to find candidates

Discovery channels are useful for building a list, not for certifying quality. Hiring guides commonly point developers to SoundBetter, Upwork, Fiverr, the Game Audio Network Guild, game-development communities and Discord servers, itch.io, YouTube and Reddit. You can also ask trusted developers, audio directors and middleware specialists for referrals.

Search using the game’s actual need: “adaptive combat music,” “orchestral indie game composer,” “chiptune exploration loops” or “Wwise interactive music.” Ask every candidate for complete, relevant examples and a description of what they personally delivered. A polished track made for film or an album may demonstrate writing ability but not looping, transitions or implementation discipline.

Build a shortlist

  1. Collect five to ten candidates whose samples match the game’s genre or emotional direction.
  2. Remove anyone who cannot meet your target dates or who will not clarify what the quoted fee includes.
  3. Ask the remaining candidates for two or three relevant complete cues, not only a rapid montage.
  4. Request a short explanation of their workflow, review points, technical deliverables and availability during your production window.
  5. Invite two to four finalists to quote the same written scope.

Judge musical fit from evidence, not labels

Listen for gameplay support

Play each relevant example from beginning to end. Does the cue leave room for sound effects and dialogue? Does its intensity match the time a player may spend in that state? Can it loop without an obvious seam? Does it develop enough to avoid fatigue while remaining predictable enough to support play?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match style to the project’s certainty

If your musical direction is settled, a distinctive style that already fits may be the safest choice. If the identity is still forming, breadth and collaborative concept development may matter more than a single signature sound. Neither approach guarantees a successful score; use it to decide what to test in interviews and a paid concept phase.

Request a focused audition carefully

For a finalist, consider a small paid trial: one short cue or a musical sketch based on your brief. Define the length, fee, deadline, permitted use and whether the sketch becomes part of the final scope. Do not request a large unpaid soundtrack sample. The goal is to observe interpretation, feedback response and technical thinking, not to obtain free production.

Verify interactive and implementation capability

Ask specific questions rather than accepting “I do game audio” as proof.

  • How do you design seamless loops and loop points?
  • How would you structure layers for the game’s named gameplay states?
  • How do you handle transitions, stingers, intensity ramps and musical resolution?
  • Can you deliver stems or alternate mixes when the implementation requires them?
  • Which engines or middleware have you used, and what exactly did you implement?
  • Will you provide file names, cue sheets, metadata and implementation documentation?
  • Is implementation included in your proposal, optional, or assigned to someone else?
  • How do you test memory use, streaming and transitions on the target platform?

Ask to see a project example or a short screen recording that demonstrates the candidate’s role. A composer who writes the music but has never implemented adaptive behavior may still be an excellent fit if your team has an audio implementer; price and schedule that division explicitly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare proposals on identical scope

Send every finalist the same brief and request an itemized response. Two bids labeled “ten minutes of music” may differ radically if one includes live players, stems, implementation and unlimited revisions while the other includes stereo files and one revision.

Proposal item What to make explicit
Composition and arrangement Number of cues, estimated finished minutes, alternate versions and thematic development.
Interactive structure Loops, layers, transitions, stingers, intensity states and implementation responsibility.
Production Live musicians, orchestra, conductor, recording venue, editing, mixing, mastering and surround versions.
Deliverables WAV specifications, stems, naming, session files, cue sheets, documentation and source assets if promised.
Revisions Number of included rounds, who consolidates feedback and the fee or process for additional rounds.
Schedule Concept, drafts, approvals, final delivery and post-delivery support dates.
Rights and credit Ownership or license, permitted uses, exclusivity, territory, term, soundtrack rights and billing.
Price and payment Fixed project fee or rate sheet, deposit, milestone installments, expenses and change-order rates.

Require each finalist to identify assumptions and exclusions. Have them price likely add-ons—extra cues, a new gameplay state, a port, live recording or implementation—so a scope change does not become a dispute.

Understand what game music can cost

Michael Sweet’s Berklee Online pricing article presents $1,000 per finished minute as a broad industry going rate for professional game music. The article does not establish a universal current indie rate and does not state a publication year for that figure. Experience, genre, complexity, interactive structure, recording requirements, platforms and rights can move an individual quote substantially.

The same source says music and sound commonly represent 5–15% of a project’s total budget, also as a broad benchmark rather than a rule. Its example is a $100,000 game with a $5,000–$15,000 audio budget. That range may need to cover sound design, dialogue and implementation as well as music, so it is not automatically a composer’s fee.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Cost driver Why it changes the quote
Interactive design More layers, states, transitions and testing require more writing and implementation time than linear tracks.
Live musicians or orchestra Player fees, contracting, rehearsal, venue, conductor, recording and editing add direct costs.
Orchestration and conducting Large ensembles require specialist preparation beyond composing.
Surround or multiple mixes Additional mixing, review and delivery versions are required.
Multiple platforms Format, memory and implementation checks may differ by platform.
Research and development Unsettled musical direction, prototypes and technical experiments consume paid time.
Revisions and changing scope Late creative changes can require new writing, recording or implementation.
Related services Sound design, dialogue, recording and implementation belong in the budget only when included in the agreed scope.

Choose a fee structure that fits your uncertainty. A fixed project fee works when cue count and deliverables are stable. An itemized rate sheet or milestone budget can be safer when the game is evolving. In either case, define the included revision allowance and the rate or approval process for additional work.

Set a collaboration and schedule process

Strong music can still fail if feedback arrives late or from conflicting decision-makers. Name one person who consolidates comments and one person who gives final approval. Agree how feedback will be delivered—time-coded notes, annotated videos, build reviews or written change lists—and how quickly each party must respond.

  1. Kickoff: Confirm the brief, references, technical specifications, rights approach and communication channels.
  2. Concept approval: Review themes, palette, instrumentation or a paid prototype before full production.
  3. First drafts: Approve representative cues and interactive behavior before the composer produces the entire package.
  4. Revision round: Return consolidated, actionable notes by the agreed date.
  5. Implementation test: Test loops, transitions, memory and mix in a representative game build.
  6. Final approval: Accept the specified files and documentation, record any exceptions and release the final installment.
  7. Post-delivery support: State how bug fixes, new platforms and later content are requested and priced.

Ask about availability during the whole window, not only the start date. A composer who is booked during your implementation milestone may create a production bottleneck even if the initial drafts are excellent.

Negotiate ownership, licenses and permissions

Put the rights deal in the signed agreement before composition starts. The World Intellectual Property Organization’s Mastering the Game: Business and Legal Issues for Video Game Developers explains that, in the United States, a composer agreement structured as work for hire can make the developer the owner of the created music, including the composition and/or the master recording. If the composer retains ownership, the developer may instead receive a license with defined limits. The label alone is not enough; read the actual grant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Specify the uses you need

Address the game’s initial release, patches, downloadable content, expansions, ports, platform versions, trailers, store pages, social media, advertising, livestreams and physical or digital soundtrack releases. State territory, term, exclusivity, credit and whether the developer may edit, remix, localize or adapt the music. If you expect a sequel or a spin-off, negotiate that use rather than assuming it is included.

Cover performers and third-party material

Require warranties that the work is original or properly cleared. If musicians, singers, orchestrators or recording contractors participate, obtain separate agreements or confirm that the composer is responsible for securing the necessary rights. A developer’s rights can be incomplete even when the composer has delivered the files.

Use jurisdiction-appropriate advice

WIPO’s work-for-hire explanation is specifically framed for the United States and is not universal legal advice. Cross-border projects should have the actual agreement reviewed for the governing law, tax treatment and intended exploitation. Clarify who pays withholding, union, performer or collection-society costs where relevant.

Check whether union performers affect the plan

If your project uses covered performers, review the current SAG-AFTRA Independent Interactive Media Agreements. The official page describes a Tiered Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement with four tiers for project budgets from $250,000 to $30 million; the retrieved page does not state a year for those figures. This information is relevant to projects using covered union performers, not proof that every composer contract or indie game qualifies. Verify current eligibility, obligations and rates with SAG-AFTRA before recording.

Red flags that should change your decision

  • The candidate will not provide complete examples or explain their role in shared credits.
  • The quote uses a per-minute number but omits cue count, interactive layers, stems, revisions or implementation.
  • “Unlimited revisions” appears without a feedback deadline or change-control definition.
  • The composer promises every engine and platform but cannot describe a comparable implementation.
  • Rights are described only as “you can use it in the game,” with no treatment of marketing, DLC, ports or soundtrack use.
  • Live-player or vocalist costs are unspecified, or third-party permissions are assumed rather than documented.
  • Availability is vague, communication is slow before signing, or no person is identified for final approval.
  • The candidate pressures you to begin before the scope, payment schedule and rights are written down.

Use a decision matrix for the final choice

Score finalists against the same evidence instead of letting one spectacular demo dominate. A simple 1–5 scale works if you record the reason for every score.

Criterion Evidence to score
Musical fit Relevant complete cues, response to your references and ability to support gameplay mood.
Interactive skill Loops, layers, transitions, stems, middleware or engine work and testing method.
Scope clarity Itemized deliverables, assumptions, exclusions and change-order pricing.
Collaboration Feedback process, communication, decision-making and willingness to prototype.
Schedule confidence Confirmed availability, milestones and post-delivery support.
Total cost Comparable price including recording, implementation, revisions and likely expenses.
Rights fit Ownership or license, permitted uses, exclusivity, credit and performer clearances.

Weight the criteria according to the game. A technically complex roguelike may give interactive skill and implementation more weight; a short narrative game may prioritize thematic collaboration and performance. Keep the unweighted scores and your notes so the team can explain the decision later.

Final pre-signing checklist

  • The brief names genre, setting, emotional goals, references and gameplay states.
  • Cue count, estimated minutes, versions, loops, layers and stingers are listed.
  • Engine, middleware, formats, sample rate, stems, memory limits and documentation are specified.
  • Composition, recording, musicians, mixing, mastering, sound design and implementation responsibilities are separated.
  • Milestones, approval owners, revision rounds and feedback deadlines are written.
  • Price, installments, expenses and additional-work rates are clear.
  • Ownership or license and every intended game, marketing, DLC, port and soundtrack use are granted.
  • Credit, exclusivity, territory, term and editing rights are addressed.
  • Originality warranties and permissions for performers or third-party material are covered.
  • The agreement has been reviewed for the jurisdictions involved.

The decision

Hire the composer who can demonstrate the right sound and a dependable way to deliver it inside your game. A slightly higher quote is often the better value when it includes the interactive design, technical files, revisions, schedule access and rights your release actually needs. The cheapest offer is only comparable after those items are written identically for every finalist.
