How to Choose a Cozy Multiplayer Game for a Group of Friends

A practical guide to choosing a cozy game friends can actually play together, from shared farms to island visits and cross-platform Valley Visits.

Choose the multiplayer setup before you choose the cozy theme: check that everyone’s platforms can connect, confirm how many people can play at once, and find out whether the game is shared farming, island visits, or another kind of activity. For a small group building one project together, Stardew Valley is a strong fit if its host can be available. For island visits on Nintendo systems, consider Animal Crossing: New Horizons. For friends on different platforms, Disney Dreamlight Valley supports cross-platform Valley Visits, with some setup details to verify.

Start with the multiplayer setup, not the screenshots

“Co-op” does not tell you whether a game fits your group. Before buying, answer these questions in order:

  1. Can everyone join from their platform? A game being available on several platforms does not automatically mean those versions can play together online. Look for an explicit cross-play statement covering the activity you want.
  2. How many people can play at once? Check the simultaneous player limit, not just whether a game has multiplayer.
  3. Is play local or online? Some games require a separate console and copy for each participant even when you are playing together remotely.
  4. Who hosts, and does progress persist? If one player must be online to open the shared world, that person’s schedule can determine when the group plays.
  5. What do you actually do together? Shared projects suit groups that enjoy dividing up tasks; visiting and decorating suit a more social drop-in mood.
  6. Does the pace suit everyone? Agree whether you want gentle farming and conversation or are happy to mix in pressure and challenge. “Cozy” is a personal preference, not a reliably measured rating.

Compare these three options by how friends play

Game Group arrangement Player limit established by cited source Key consideration
Stardew Valley Friends join a host’s farm and work on the same world. Up to four in ConcernedApe’s 2018 co-op update; Nintendo’s Canadian Switch listing describes online play for one to four. The host must be in the game for friends to join that hosted farm.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Friends visit an island; progression responsibilities include the Resident Representative. Up to eight on an island online; up to 12 online on a Slumber Island when everyone owns the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Each player needs a system and game. Online play also requires a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online.
Disney Dreamlight Valley Online Valley Visits; Gameloft also confirms DreamSnaps together across platforms. Not stated in the cited cross-platform support page. Cross-platform support is confirmed for those activities, not every mode or setup detail.

Choose a shared farm if your group wants one project

Stardew Valley

In ConcernedApe’s August 1, 2018 multiplayer update, the creator wrote: “Stardew Valley now supports up to 4 player co-op.” Friends join one player’s hosted world and work on the same farm, sharing world progression and main-story progress. Inventories, skills, relationships, quests, and recipes remain individual. The host must be in-game when the group wants to play. ConcernedApe’s multiplayer update explains the arrangement.

Nintendo’s Canadian Switch listing describes inviting one to three players and lists online multiplayer for one to four. That establishes the count for the Switch listing; it does not establish cross-play with every other platform. See Nintendo’s Canadian listing.

#1 Best Overall
Smirk & Dagger A Place for All My Books Board Game
  • COZY PUZZLE STRATEGY – Sort and arrange stacks of book tiles in different rooms of your apartment to complete personal projects, balancing limited space with smart planning for a satisfying puzzle experience.
  • BEAUTIFUL COMPONENTS – Includes 130 illustrated book tiles with engraved spines, four apartment mats, tokens, and a village board that create an inviting, tactile tabletop experience for cozy gamers.
  • EMOTIONAL AND RELATABLE THEME – Celebrate the joy of reading, collecting, and managing social energy through meaningful decisions that appeal to book lovers, introverts, and fans of warm thematic games.
  • SOLO AND MULTIPLAYER OPTIONS – Play solo against an automated rival book collector or enjoy a competitive 2–4 player experience with light interaction and accessible strategy suitable for all skill levels.
  • QUICK AND REPLAYABLE – Each session plays in 15–20 minutes per player, offering easy-to-learn yet rich gameplay that rewards planning and creativity, making it ideal for families and hobby gamers.

This is a good match for a small group that likes dividing farm tasks and can coordinate around the host. If friends have different schedules, decide who will host and whether that person can be available before starting a shared farm.

Choose island visits if the social space matters most

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Nintendo says up to eight people can play together on an island through local wireless or online play. Local wireless and online play require one system and one game per player. Online play also requires each player to have a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo’s current support details are in its Animal Crossing: New Horizons multiplayer FAQ.

  • Multiple Ways of Scoring Points : balance building your habitat corrdiors with placing your wildlife in the best possible configurations.

The shared island is not the same as a jointly progressed farm: visitors come to an island, while some progression responsibilities belong to its Resident Representative, a role that cannot be reassigned. Nintendo also says only one island can be created per Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch system, which matters in a household sharing a console.

A separate edition-specific exception applies to Slumber Island: Nintendo’s FAQ says up to 12 people can play online when all participants own Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Treat that as a feature for groups with that edition, not the standard island player limit.

For mixed-platform friends, verify the exact activity

Disney Dreamlight Valley

Gameloft’s Help Center says that since the August 21, 2024 “Dapper Delights” update, players on all platforms can visit one another’s Valleys online and participate in DreamSnaps together. Its statement supports cross-platform play for those activities: Gameloft’s cross-play support page.

The page does not give an exhaustive current platform list, simultaneous visitor limit, purchase or account requirements, or cross-play behavior for every mode. Check the current platform and game support information for those specifics before your group buys in.

Make the group decision in five minutes

  1. List devices. Ask each friend which system or platform they will use. For mixed platforms, require an explicit cross-play confirmation for the session you want.
  2. Count players. Compare the number joining at the same time with the stated limit. For Animal Crossing, also confirm that everyone has the required individual system and copy.
  3. Pick the shared activity. Choose Stardew Valley for a shared farm and world progression, Animal Crossing for island visits and social decorating, or investigate Dreamlight Valley if cross-platform Valley Visits are the priority.
  4. Check the schedule and access requirements. Decide whether the Stardew Valley host can be present. For online Animal Crossing, account for Nintendo Accounts and Nintendo Switch Online, as well as each player’s system and game.
  5. Agree on the pace. Make sure everyone wants the same broad mood; a gentle game for one person may still feel too busy or demanding to another.
