Choose a backup wide receiver with either a dependable role already—routes and targets in the passing offense—or a credible path to a larger role. Then weigh that opportunity against your scoring format, lineup needs, bench space, and waiver options. A single explosive game is not enough if the player is unlikely to see steady work again.
Decide what the roster spot needs to do
A backup can fill different jobs: cover an imminent bye or injury, give you a usable weekly flex option, or sit on the bench as a higher-upside stash. The right choice depends on which job matters most to your roster.
- Near-term coverage: Favor a receiver with a role you can use soon, rather than a speculative player who needs several things to go right.
- Weekly depth: Look for repeatable involvement that could make the player a reasonable substitute in your lineup.
- Upside stash: Consider a lower-role player only when you can name a plausible change that would increase his routes or targets.
Account for your scoring (standard, half-PPR, or PPR), starting receiver and flex requirements, league size, bench capacity, and the quality of available waiver options. There is no universal number of receivers to roster: the useful depth depends on your league and team.
Start with role and repeatable opportunity
Check whether the receiver is running routes, playing snaps, and earning targets as part of the offense. Those indicators give you a firmer basis for expecting future use than a box-score spike alone. In NFL.com’s 2026 draft advice, Matt Okada describes the principle plainly: “Volume is king in fantasy football.” The point is to look for opportunity, not to treat any one statistic or threshold as a guarantee.

For a recent big game, ask whether the player normally plays regularly and whether his weekly involvement is steady. NFL.com fantasy analyst Marcas Grant warns that a huge day can be hard to repeat if a player does not get regular playing time or weekly touches. For receivers, apply that test to routes and targets: was the opportunity sustained, or did it come from a one-off game script or a teammate’s absence?
Require a specific case for a low-role player
A receiver who is not currently involved can still be a worthwhile bench stash, but “backup” is not itself a fantasy role. Identify what would have to change for him to become useful: more routes, a depth-chart shift, a teammate missing time, or evidence that he can earn targets when given a chance. Assess how plausible that change is and whether the player has shown anything with the opportunity he has received.

Keep contingent opportunity conditional. A teammate’s injury may open routes, but it does not establish that the reserve will take over or command targets. A useful claim is that the player could see more work if the starter remains out; then watch for confirmation in active status, playing time, and target involvement.
Compare candidates on the factors that change value
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Current role | Routes, snaps, targets, and whether he is a regular part of the passing offense. | Existing involvement offers a clearer route to usable production than a case based only on a possible injury. |
| Role-growth path | The specific change that could increase opportunity, and how credible it looks given current team information. | Upside is useful on the bench only when there is a plausible route to more work. |
| Scoring fit | Whether your league rewards receptions, yardage, or touchdowns most heavily. | Reception volume is more valuable in PPR than in standard scoring. NFL.com’s 2026 breakout analysis explicitly uses PPR as its default, so its player evaluations are not format-neutral. |
| Timing and utility | Whether you need coverage for a specific week, a likely absence, or a longer-term stash. | A speculative player may not solve an immediate lineup problem. |
| Waiver alternatives | Whether a similar receiver is available, including his expected role and upcoming schedule. | A bench spot is more valuable when the player offers something harder to replace. |
Do not let a favorable schedule carry a long-range decision by itself. NFL.com’s 2026 draft advice notes that defenses and schedules change from year to year, so schedule strength is better treated as a limited tiebreaker than as proof of future production.

Use player examples as evidence, not promises
NFL.com’s 2026 analysis offers examples of how usage can inform a decision, but none establishes a universal threshold for fantasy success:
- Target volume: Okada’s article says five wide receivers with at least 150 targets finished among the top six in fantasy points in its cited prior-season comparison; George Pickens was identified as an outlier with 137 targets. This supports looking at opportunity, not assuming that a particular target count guarantees a finish.
- Contingent opportunity: In five games without Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson averaged 13.6 targets, 9.2 receptions, and 119.6 receiving yards per game, with four total touchdowns, according to the NFL.com article. It equates that stretch to 26 fantasy points per game while cautioning that Wilson was unlikely to repeat it with Harrison healthy. That is an example of a role changing during an absence, not a general projection for backups.
- Target involvement: The same NFL.com analysis reports that Josh Downs had a 27.6% target rate and a 66.7% catch rate over the prior two seasons in its comparison requiring at least 150 targets. Those figures describe the article’s cited player and time window; they are not minimums for choosing a reserve.
Recheck the role before making an in-season move
In-season opportunity can change quickly. Before adding or starting a reserve, check the current injury report and active status, depth chart, recent routes and targets, and coach or team comments about his role. If a player’s recent production depended on an injured teammate, reassess when that teammate returns or when the team’s usage changes.

NFL Fantasy’s Best Available feature is described as using projections to estimate the point difference a player could make as a starter or bench piece, with views for this week, the rest of the season, playoffs, or another future week. It may help compare candidates, but projections do not replace checking real-world role or your league settings. Confirm that the feature and its options are currently available before relying on them.
The 2026 names and usage figures above are time-sensitive examples. An individualized choice also depends on your scoring, league size, bench slots, roster, and waiver pool.
