Confirm the starter’s status, check your league’s lineup deadline, then compare eligible bench players before turning to waivers. Choose based on the replacement’s likely role, your league’s scoring and the matchup—not name recognition or one big game. Make the change before that player’s lineup slot locks.
1. Confirm the starter’s status
An injury designation earlier in the week is not the same as confirmation that a player will miss the game. NFL Fantasy’s guide describes a “Q” designation as uncertain and potentially a game-time decision. Check the latest team news and the designation shown in your fantasy app close to kickoff. NFL Fantasy’s guide to managing your team also cautions that projections are estimates, not guarantees.
If the status remains uncertain, weigh the chance of getting useful late news against the risk of the replacement’s game starting first. Do not leave the decision until after the replacement’s own lineup deadline.
2. Check the rules that apply to your lineup
Before choosing a player, check your platform’s lock time, eligible roster slots and league scoring. Lineup rules and transaction mechanics vary by platform and league, so do not assume another manager’s deadline applies to you.

- Lock time: Is your lineup locked individually when each player’s game begins, at a fixed weekly deadline, or under a custom setting?
- Eligibility: Can the candidate legally fill the injured player’s slot, or would you need to rearrange other starters?
- Scoring: Does your league use standard, half-PPR or full PPR scoring, or bonuses that change the value of particular kinds of production?
- Transactions: Can you still move a player after another player in your lineup has started? Check this before rearranging slots.
For ESPN specifically, its Setting Your Lineup guidance, updated August 11, 2026, says changes can be made until a player’s scheduled game begins, subject to roster and eligibility rules. ESPN’s Quick Lineup uses rankings to fill eligible slots with players who have games scheduled; that feature and deadline description should not be treated as universal rules for other platforms.
3. Compare your bench before using waivers
Start with players already on your roster who are eligible for the open slot. A direct backup to the injured starter may be worth considering if there is reason to expect meaningful work, but a depth-chart label alone does not make that player the best choice. Compare candidates by expected role and workload, how their likely production fits your scoring, and their opponent.

Look for evidence of a usable role—such as a realistic path to snaps, touches, routes or targets—rather than choosing solely because someone had a strong recent game. NFL.com fantasy analyst Marcas Grant notes that a one-week spike may be difficult to repeat when a player lacks regular playing time or steady touches. His in-season roster-management guidance also identifies replacing injured players as one use of the waiver wire.
4. Use waivers if the bench has no credible option
If no eligible bench player has a convincing role, check the available players and your league’s transaction rules. Review waiver priority or FAAB requirements, when claims process, whether the player will be available in time, and which roster spot you would have to open. Waiver systems differ by league and platform.

NFL.com’s beginner’s guide describes Tuesday claims and Wednesday awards in standard NFL.com leagues and notes that a manager may need to drop a player to make room. That article dates to 2017, so treat its schedule as historical guidance and verify the current rules in your league rather than applying those days as a general deadline.

- Confirm the latest status for the starter and identify the open lineup slot.
- Check the platform’s lock time, position eligibility and scoring settings.
- Compare eligible bench options by expected opportunity, scoring fit and opponent.
- If none is credible, check waiver availability, claim timing, priority or budget, and roster space.
- Move the replacement into the correct active slot before that player’s lock, then verify the lineup saved.
