Decide by comparing the latest availability news and the back’s likely workload with your best lineup-eligible alternative, then be ready to act before the player’s game locks.
What “Questionable” means for your lineup
The NFL defines Questionable as uncertain whether a player will participate. Doubtful means unlikely to participate, while Out means the player will not play. The designation does not tell you whether to start him or provide a fantasy probability. The NFL’s explanation is in its injury-reporting policy announcement.
Practice participation and game status are separate pieces of information. A player can be listed as Did Not Participate, Limited Participation, or Full Participation in practice; the game-status designation is a separate report. Check current team and league updates close to kickoff rather than treating an early-week practice label as a final decision. NFL Fantasy’s beginner guide also advises checking injury information and player news when deciding whether to use a player with a Q designation.
Compare the questionable back with the actual alternative
Do not make the decision based on the questionable player’s name or the backup’s place on the depth chart alone. Compare what each player is likely to do in this week’s game, using your league’s scoring and roster settings.

A backup should not be assumed to inherit the questionable player’s entire job. NFL Fantasy’s 2026 running-back analysis discusses committee situations and role competition that can make a presumed replacement’s workload uncertain. Its player examples are Week 1-specific; the useful general lesson is to assess the expected role, not to carry over a seasonal player call to a different week.
Should you start a player listed as questionable?
Start him when the available information supports a worthwhile role and his expected contribution still compares favorably with your alternative after allowing for availability and workload uncertainty. Choose the alternative when it has the more reliable role and a stronger expected contribution, particularly if a zero from the questionable player would be costly.
If both choices are uncertain or the replacement is weak, weigh the possible upside against your ability to respond to late news. Your league’s scoring rules, roster slots, and the quality of available alternatives matter more than the label by itself.
Projections can help compare options, but they are estimates, not guarantees. NFL Fantasy’s Best Available player feature describes projected point differences for starters and bench players, with views for the current week, future weeks, rest of season, and playoffs. Check that the projection reflects your league’s scoring and the current game week.

Who should you start if your running back is questionable?
Use the best replacement your league actually makes available—not an assumed backup who may share the work. Check the candidate’s likely carries and receiving opportunities, competing backs, and projection for your scoring format. If the questionable starter’s role appears stronger and the risk is manageable, keeping him in may be reasonable; if the replacement offers the more dependable expected workload, use that player.

NFL teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff, according to NFL support’s Auto-Swap Inactives guidance. That timing makes a late-game questionable player different from one whose game starts early: you may have more time to see news for the late player, but only if you still have a replacement who has not locked.
- Check your platform’s lock rules. Do not assume every fantasy service uses the same lineup deadline or allows the same post-kickoff moves.
- Keep a viable, eligible replacement available. For a late-window player, choose someone who has not already played and can occupy the needed roster slot.
- Recheck news before kickoff. Use current team and league updates, then make any swap before the relevant player locks.
- Use Auto-Swap only for the case it covers. NFL describes its feature as replacing players projected for zero points with the top player in the manager’s chosen backup order. It does not promise protection for a questionable player who is active but limited or performs poorly.
If your platform allows a player to move between RB and FLEX, that flexibility may preserve additional choices. Confirm the service’s actual slot and lock rules before relying on it; there is no universal lineup-lock rule established for all fantasy platforms.

Do not treat an old “Probable” statistic as Questionable odds
The NFL Competition Committee reported in 2016 that approximately 95% of players listed as Probable in prior years played. The NFL said it eliminated Probable because the designation had become close to a certainty. That historical figure describes the retired Probable label; it is not a current estimate of the chance that a Questionable player will play. The NFL’s policy announcement defines Questionable as uncertainty, and the sources cited here do not establish a current authoritative percentage for that category.
