To evaluate a wide receiver beyond the box score, separate opportunity from performance: check how often and where he ran routes, how difficult his targets were, what he did with them, and whether his production after the catch exceeded expectation. Receptions, yards and touchdowns describe outcomes; they do not explain a player’s role or the conditions behind those outcomes.
Start with role and opportunity
Before judging production, establish how the receiver was used. A full-time route runner, a rotational player and a screen specialist do not receive the same chances. Compare routes run and, where available, route participation—the share of team dropbacks on which the player ran a route—alongside targets and the team opportunities available to him.
Totals can rise because a player gets more playing time or because his offense throws more often. Conversely, modest receiving totals do not by themselves show that a player performed poorly. Keep route and target counts beside rates: a rate from limited opportunities is less conclusive than the same rate over sustained use, and there is no universal minimum sample size established here.
Look at route mix and depth
Routes shape both the opportunities a receiver gets and the conditions for converting them. A screen target and a deep target are not comparable attempts: they differ in depth, likely catch conditions and potential yards after the catch.

NFL Next Gen Stats uses player tracking to classify high-level route types. Its route-recognition explainer says route data are capped at the forward pass or a set post-snap time to reduce noise from broken plays and post-catch movement. Its reported dataset found that the average pass catcher ran a go route on 22.3% of routes, while go routes were targeted 10.8% of the time. Those figures belong to that article’s dataset; they are not current-season constants or individual-player benchmarks. Read NFL Next Gen Stats’ route-recognition explainer.
Route mix also helps explain why aggregate catch rates can mislead. A player whose routes produce many difficult downfield targets may have a lower catch rate than a player fed shorter throws, without that difference alone establishing who is better.

Measure efficiency without treating one stat as a grade
Once role and route context are clear, use per-target or per-route measures to ask what happened when the receiver had an opportunity. NFL Next Gen Stats reports metrics including EPA per target, catch rate and catch rate over expectation (CROE) in its route-recognition framework.
- EPA per target: Expected points added per target estimates how a target changed the play’s value in context. NFL describes EPA as comparing the down, distance and field-position situation at the start of a play with its end state. It can distinguish a short catch that converts an important situation from yardage that adds less value, but it is not a standalone measure of receiver skill.
- Catch rate: Receptions divided by targets. Read it alongside route mix and target depth rather than as a context-free verdict.
- CROE: Catch rate over expectation compares a receiver’s catches with modeled completion probabilities for his targets. It can help account for target difficulty, but the model and its inputs are provider-specific.
These measures answer different questions. EPA per target describes play value; CROE compares catches with a model’s expectations; neither replaces checking opportunity, role and the underlying targets. For a current ranking, use the same season and provider for every player, and verify the metric’s current definition.

Put separation and coverage in context
Separation can help describe whether a receiver gets open, but it is not a universal, provider-neutral statistic. NFL Next Gen Stats discusses separation from the nearest defender and shows that typical separation differs by route. Pro Football Focus describes its 2024 “separation percentage” as measuring how often a receiver beats coverage to get open. Those labels should not be assumed to use identical calculations.
Target depth and coverage conditions matter, too. A raw catch percentage does not reveal how difficult the throws were. NFL’s 2025 metric update describes an occlusion-aware separation feature in completion probability, illustrating that modeled completion difficulty can account for more than a receiver’s observed catch rate. Metrics and models can change by season, so note the provider, season and definition when interpreting a number. See NFL Next Gen Stats’ 2025 metric update.

PFF also announced a receiver metric for success against press coverage in its 2024 advanced-metrics release. It may add context about press performance, but identify it as PFF’s measure and check the current definition before using player values. Read PFF’s 2024 advanced-metrics announcement.

Raw yards after catch (YAC) blend the receiver’s contribution with the situation at the moment of the catch. NFL Next Gen Stats’ expected yards after catch (xYAC) estimates the yards expected from tracking context at that point; YAC Success Rate indicates whether the receiver gained more or less than expectation on a per-play basis. These model-based measures give more context than raw YAC alone, but they remain estimates—not a complete account of a receiver’s ability. Read the NFL xYAC explainer.

Compare receivers on like-for-like evidence
When one receiver has more targets than another, do not compare their totals as if they had equal opportunity. Build the comparison in layers, keeping the same season and metric provider wherever possible:
- Role and exposure: Compare routes run, route participation when available, target counts and team opportunity share.
- Deployment: Compare route types and target depth to see whether their assignments are similar.
- Target conditions: Consider target difficulty, separation and coverage context, noting the provider and definition for each measure.
- Results: Review catches, receiving yards and touchdowns, then add catch rate, CROE or EPA per target to put outcomes in context.
- After-catch value: Compare actual YAC with xYAC or YAC Success Rate where available.
NFL Next Gen Stats says its tracking system captures player location, speed, distance traveled and acceleration 10 times per second. The resulting statistics are built from tracking data and provider-specific definitions; they should be read as evidence about particular parts of performance, not as a single definitive player grade. NFL Football Operations explains Next Gen Stats tracking.
