Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a controller that works with the exact platform and game you play, then pick the input layout that feels right: a standard gamepad or fight pad, a lever arcade stick, or a leverless all-button controller. A fight stick is an option, not a required upgrade. Before buying, verify the specific model’s compatibility; adapters and DIY boards each have narrower requirements to check.
Start with your platform and the controller you already use
Write down the console or PC and the exact fighting-game version you play. If your current controller works with both, you can keep using it; the sources cited here do not establish that any one layout is inherently faster or better.
Compatibility is model-specific, even when products have similar names. HORI lists distinct Fighting Stick α versions for PlayStation/Windows and Xbox. Its PlayStation/Windows model is identified for PS5, PS4, Windows 11 and Windows 10, while the separate Xbox version is for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Check the PlayStation/Windows model or the Xbox model against your system rather than relying on the product name alone.
Choose the input layout that suits you
Gamepad or fight pad
A familiar handheld controller is a sensible choice if you value easy storage or want one controller for games beyond fighting games. Check whether its directional pad and button arrangement suit you; the sources here do not offer comparative D-pad testing. A fight pad is another gamepad-style option, but compatibility still depends on its exact model and platform.

- Great for both Arcade and Fighting Games
- Compact, lightweight and portable design

Lever arcade stick
Choose this layout if you want an arcade-style lever and a large button surface. For example, HORI describes its PlayStation/Windows Fighting Stick α as having a HAYABUSA lever and buttons, replaceable artwork and accessible parts. It also supports four custom profiles. Those are product features, not evidence of a performance advantage over a gamepad or leverless controller.
Leverless, all-button controller
On a leverless controller, buttons handle directional inputs as well as other actions. Whether that arrangement is comfortable is a matter of personal fit; the available product documentation does not compare its performance with other layouts. HORI’s NOLVA Mechanical All-Button Arcade Controller is one documented example, listed for PS5 and Windows PC on HORI Japan’s product page: NOLVA.

Compare the practical trade-offs
| Option | What to weigh | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Gamepad or fight pad | Familiar handheld controls, compact storage and possible use in other game genres. | Exact console compatibility and whether the directional pad and button layout suit you. |
| Lever arcade stick | Arcade-style lever, larger button surface, and any model-specific customization or serviceability. | That the specific platform version works with your console and game. |
| Leverless controller | Button-based directional inputs and whether the layout feels comfortable to you. | Supported platform, game and desired configuration. |
| Converter | Potentially lets a supported wired controller serve a particular system and game use case. | Both the controller model and the target game type against the adapter maker’s compatibility list. |
| DIY board | Useful for assembling or upgrading a custom controller; the board is one component, not a complete ready-to-use stick. | Board support, installation needs and any model-specific setup caveats. |
Size, portability, customization, repairability and use outside fighting games may matter as much as layout. A larger arcade-style device can be less convenient to store than a handheld gamepad, while a model with accessible parts or replaceable artwork may suit someone who wants to maintain or personalize it.
Check adapter and custom-build compatibility carefully
Brook Wingman FGC converter
Brook describes Wingman FGC as supporting PS5 fighting games, PS4 games of all types, and PC X-Input games of all types. Its PS5 support is specifically for fighting games—not all PS5 games. Brook also says only controllers on its official list are guaranteed to work, so check the Wingman FGC product information and official compatibility list for both the exact controller and use case.

Brook Gen-5X Series Fighting Board
The Gen-5X is a component for a custom controller build or upgrade, not a finished controller. Brook lists support for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch and PC, and says its terminal blocks do not require soldering. The Gen-5X MINI has a separate Bluetooth-setting caveat; do not assume that note applies to every Gen-5X board. Check Brook’s Gen-5X product documentation for the board and installation details. Board support alone does not prove that every completed build will work with every game.

HORI’s PlayStation/Windows Fighting Stick α page identifies its platform support, customization and accessible parts; the separate Xbox page describes a different platform-targeted model with replaceable artwork and accessible arcade-quality parts. HORI also lists lever and all-button products in its arcade-stick catalog. These manufacturer descriptions help identify form factors and stated features, but they are not independent comparisons of durability, latency or competitive results.

HORI Japan’s NOLVA page lists multiple Street Fighter 6 character design variants and a tax-inclusive price of 19,980 yen for its Japan-market listing when accessed. That regional listing is not a universal price or a current US price. HORI’s US catalog displayed the Fighting Stick α PlayStation and Xbox variants at $219.99 and Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 editions at $229.99 when accessed; catalog prices can change and should be checked with the seller.
Quick Recap
A pre-purchase checklist
- Identify your setup: note the actual console or PC and the exact fighting-game version you play.
- Match the hardware: open the manufacturer page for the exact model and platform version, including the hardware revision if specified.
- Check adapters against both lists: confirm the target game type and exact wired controller model on the adapter maker’s official compatibility page.
- For a custom build, verify the board and setup: check platform support, installation requirements and any model-specific settings, including the Gen-5X MINI Bluetooth caveat where applicable.
- Check current availability and price: regional catalog listings and prices can change, and a board or converter may add to the cost of a finished setup.
