To make a YouTube upload file smaller, encode it at a lower average video bitrate or choose a lower output resolution; two-pass encoding helps allocate bits toward a chosen average bitrate, but does not shrink a file by itself or guarantee an exact size. It is an offline workflow for a finished video file—not a setting for an active YouTube Live stream.
What two-pass encoding does—and what it does not
In a two-pass encode, the first pass analyzes the video and records statistics; the second uses those statistics to encode toward the requested average bitrate. That makes two-pass average-bitrate encoding useful when you have a file-size or data-rate target: the encoder can allocate more bits to complex scenes and fewer to simpler ones while aiming for the average. FFmpeg documents this two-pass workflow in its documentation.
Two passes require more encoding work than one. They do not promise an exact byte count or universally better visual quality. Final size also depends on duration, audio bitrate, container overhead, source complexity, codec, and encoder settings. There is no universal percentage saving to expect.
Reducing the target video bitrate is what reduces the video data budget, usually reducing file size for the same duration and codec. The tradeoff is that fewer bits are available to represent image detail, especially in fast motion, foliage, particles, and other complex scenes. A size target and a quality target are different priorities.

Choose a bitrate for your resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, High Profile, variable bitrate (VBR), and encoding at the frame rate at which the footage was recorded. It says no bitrate limit is required and presents its figures as recommendations, not mandatory minimums or guaranteed quality thresholds. The following SDR upload recommendations are from YouTube Help; the page’s publication year is not stated.
| Resolution | 24, 25, or 30 fps | 48, 50, or 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| 8K | 80–160 Mbps | 120–240 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
| 1440p | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 480p | 2.5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p | 1 Mbps | 1.5 Mbps |
These are reference values for SDR uploads, not the bitrate YouTube will use for playback after it transcodes your upload. YouTube also recommends 384 kbps stereo audio and says audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution. See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations for the current guidance.

If you have a target file size
Approximate total data size is average total bitrate multiplied by duration: total bits ≈ bits per second × seconds. To estimate a target average bitrate, convert the desired file size to bits and divide by the video duration in seconds. Then reserve part of that total bitrate for audio and container overhead before setting the video bitrate. This is an estimate, not an exact-byte guarantee.
For example, a one-hour file at an average total bitrate of 8 Mbps contains roughly 3.6 billion bytes of encoded data before allowing for differences in how file size is reported and for container overhead. Audio must fit within the total budget; do not assign the entire target to video.

If the video is HDR
Do not apply the SDR table blindly to HDR. YouTube lists different HDR bitrate recommendations and requires correct transfer-function, color-primary, and matrix metadata. Its guidance lists VP9 Profile 2, AV1, and HEVC/H.265 as codecs supporting 10-bit HDR metadata at reasonable bitrates; ProRes, DNxHR, and H.264 10-bit also work, but require very high bitrates for high quality. Check the HDR section of YouTube’s upload recommendations before choosing an HDR workflow.
Two-pass workflow for a YouTube upload
- Confirm that you are encoding a file for upload. Two-pass encoding is an offline process for a recording you can analyze before uploading. It is not the way to set bitrate for a live broadcast.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate. Keep the source frame rate unless you have a deliberate reason to change it. YouTube recommends uploading at the rate the content was recorded. Avoid lowering resolution without checking the effect on legibility and detail.
- Choose a bitrate target. Use YouTube’s SDR recommendations as a starting reference for your resolution and frame rate, or calculate an approximate total bitrate from your desired file size and duration. If using a total-size target, reserve room for audio and overhead.
- Run the first pass. Use a two-pass-capable encoder’s average-bitrate mode and let its first pass write the statistics log. Keep the input and relevant encode settings consistent for both passes, and do not discard the log before the second pass finishes.
- Run the second pass. Use the same source and matching settings, with the first-pass log available, to encode toward the target average bitrate. Two-pass encoding takes longer than a single pass because it does additional analysis and encoding work.
- Check the result before uploading. Inspect the actual file size, playback, audio, and image quality in motion and in detailed or difficult scenes. If it is too large, lower the target cautiously; if quality is poor, raise the bitrate or revisit the source and settings. Consider a different resolution or codec only after checking compatibility.
The exact controls and log-file options vary by encoder, so use that encoder’s documentation for its current interface. YouTube recommends VBR, but does not require two-pass encoding.

Keep YouTube Live settings separate
A live stream is encoded and sent in real time, so there is no completed file to analyze in a first pass. YouTube’s live guidance uses a separate set of encoder and network recommendations: it lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options with qualifications by streaming path and content, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube also recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. These are live-ingestion considerations, not methods for shrinking an already recorded upload file.
For current live resolution, frame-rate, and bitrate guidance, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming tips.

Common file-size and quality problems
- The finished file misses the target size. Average-bitrate encoding aims at a data rate; audio, container overhead, duration, and content can affect the final bytes. Check the actual bitrate and size, then adjust the target rather than expecting an exact result.
- The upload looks blocky or loses detail. The video bitrate may be too low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Raise the target or reduce resolution, then inspect motion and detailed scenes again.
- The file is still too large. Lowering video bitrate or output resolution reduces the data budget, but may reduce quality. If audio occupies a meaningful share of a small total budget, account for it when recalculating the video target.
- The second pass fails or does not use the analysis. The first-pass log may be missing, inaccessible, or inconsistent with the second pass. Retain the log until encoding is complete and verify that both passes use the same input and compatible settings.
- The upload takes longer to process or playback options differ from the source. YouTube transcodes uploads for playback; the recommended upload bitrate is not a promise that viewers will receive that same bitrate. Check the uploaded video after processing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than upload a smaller file, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams made from uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
