How to Choose a Game Engine for an Experimental Indie Game

Choose an engine by testing the game’s defining interaction and checking platform, workflow, integration, and licensing fit—not by reputation alone.

Choose the engine that lets your team build and ship the game’s defining interaction on its required platforms with the least risky set of compromises. There is no universal winner: first narrow the candidates by platform, team workflow, integrations, and licensing, then build the same small, representative slice in each serious option before committing.

Start with the experiment, not the engine’s reputation

“Experimental” can mean an unusual mechanic, an exploratory prototype, an unconventional presentation, or a technical risk. Those are different challenges, so describe the one your project actually has. Write down what a player does, what the game must simulate or display to make that interaction work, and what would prove the idea is fun or viable.

Then identify the riskiest part of that experience. It might be a novel control scheme, procedural world, unusual camera, physics interaction, network feature, or a demanding visual effect. The engine should make that hard part testable early—not merely make a familiar genre easy to start.

Turn the idea into a testable slice

For each candidate, implement a small version of the same core interaction in a representative scene. Include only systems that could materially affect the choice: for example, save/load if the mechanic depends on persistent state, or a build for the most important target platform. The goal is not to produce a polished demo; it is to expose friction and constraints while changing course is still affordable.

Record how long the slice took, where you got blocked, which plugins or custom code were needed, and what compromises you made. This is a project-specific comparison, not a universal engine benchmark. A feature that is easy for one team may be costly for another.

Filter candidates by the game you need to ship

Platforms and release route

List the required platforms before comparing feature sets. Check the engine’s current export documentation for your targets, then separately verify the exact platform-holder requirements, SDK access, partner arrangements, and certification obligations. A listed export target does not itself grant console access or guarantee that a particular project can ship there.

Godot’s stable documentation lists Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD, Android, iOS, and web as game export targets. That list is a useful first filter, not a substitute for confirming the release path for your game. If consoles are essential, verify access directly with the platform holder or a qualified publishing partner before locking in an engine.

Essential integrations

Make a short list of non-negotiable integrations: platform SDKs, middleware, accessibility tools, networking services, or proprietary libraries. Check whether they are officially supported, maintained by a third party, or require your team to build and maintain a bridge. Godot’s FAQ says its core community has no plans to support proprietary closed-source SDKs, while noting that users may add such libraries themselves. That is a cost and maintenance question, not proof that a specific integration is impossible.

Compare workflow against your team’s strengths

List the languages and workflows the people who will build the game already know. Consider how designers and programmers will collaborate, how quickly the team can test changes, and whether the project depends on visual scripting or code. Familiarity is not a reason to ignore a technical blocker, but it affects how quickly a prototype can answer the important questions.

Godot: GDScript, C#, and C++

Godot officially supports GDScript, C#, and C++. Its FAQ recommends GDScript for people starting with Godot or game development, and notes that C# support is missing on the web platform and is still relatively new. If web release is required, or if the team expects to use C#, test that exact workflow in the slice rather than assuming language support is identical across targets. The FAQ recommends Godot 4.x for new projects, subject to the features the project needs.

Unreal: code and visual scripting

Epic describes Blueprint as a node-based visual scripting system for gameplay. Its documentation also explains that Blueprint markup can let programmers make C++ systems extendable by designers. That can suit teams that want a visual workflow or a mix of designer-authored gameplay and programmer-built systems; it does not establish that Blueprint is faster or better for every project. Prototype a representative mechanic with the people who would actually maintain it.

Unity: evaluate your existing workflow

For Unity, assess the languages, packages, editor workflow, and team experience your project would actually rely on. Compare those against the same slice and target build you use for other candidates. Do not treat familiarity or broad reputation as evidence that the engine is the best fit for an unusual mechanic.

Include licensing in the decision

License exposure is easiest to compare before production locks in a toolchain. The figures below reflect the official pages described here as current in 2026; pricing and terms can change. Recheck the live terms and confirm how they apply to your project before release.

Engine What the cited official terms say What to check for your project
Godot Free and open-source under the OSI-approved MIT license; the FAQ says it may be used commercially. Review the license and any separate terms attached to libraries or add-ons you use. Godot Engine FAQ: stable documentation.
Unity Unity Personal is free for customers up to $200,000 in revenue and funding in 2026. Unity Pro is required for businesses over $200,000 in total annual revenue and funding; the cited 2026 prices are $2,310 per seat per year prepaid annually or $210 per seat per month. Unity says Pro includes publishing to game consoles and Apple Vision Pro. The company states its Runtime Fee was cancelled effective September 12, 2024, and did not apply to any Unity games. Check the current eligibility threshold, price, and full plan terms. Console publishing language does not remove platform-holder approval, SDK, or other requirements. Unity Technologies: Unity Pricing Changes.
Unreal Engine Epic says game developers can use Unreal Engine for free below $1 million USD in gross product revenue. For qualifying games or applications that use engine code at runtime and are licensed to third-party end users, it states a 5% royalty on lifetime gross revenue above $1 million directly attributable to the product; sales generated in the Epic Games Store are royalty-free. For certain commercial uses over the threshold that are not games or end-user licensed applications relying on engine code at runtime, Epic lists a seat license fee of $1,850 per seat per year. Confirm which category applies to the project and read the current EULA; these terms are not individualized legal advice. Epic Games: licensing options.

These are not directly interchangeable price plans: the thresholds and charging mechanisms differ. Model the likely revenue, funding, team seats, distribution route, and nature of the product against each engine’s current terms. For a small experimental project, the cost of an integration or workaround may matter as much as the headline license.

Use a consistent comparison instead of guessing

A comparative study abstract identifies 2D and 3D support, audiovisual fidelity, core features, deployment platforms, learning resources, and licensing costs as common dimensions for comparing engines. For an experimental indie game, also score the specific mechanic, prototype iteration, team familiarity, essential integrations, and the effort required to work around missing features. These added criteria are practical decision aids, not findings that one engine wins.

  1. Set must-haves: name the mechanic, required platforms, essential integrations, and any fixed team or license constraints.
  2. Choose a small candidate set: include only engines that plausibly meet those requirements. Popularity alone is not a qualification.
  3. Build the same slice: implement the defining interaction, a representative scene, one project-critical system, and a build for the most important target.
  4. Record evidence: note elapsed work, blockers, plugin or custom-code dependencies, iteration friction, and compromises.
  5. Reassess the risks: distinguish a solvable learning curve from a platform, integration, or licensing constraint that could threaten the release plan.
  6. Choose and revisit: pick the option that best supports the game’s unusual mechanic and shipping needs. Recheck platform and licensing assumptions before release.

Make the final choice conditional on the project

Godot is a plausible candidate when its MIT licensing, supported exports, and language options fit the project, provided the team is comfortable evaluating add-ons or custom work for integrations the core engine does not provide. Unity’s Personal and Pro terms may fit a team whose eligibility and target workflow match the current plan rules; calculate against the applicable revenue and funding threshold rather than assuming the free plan will always apply. Unreal merits a slice when its code or Blueprint workflow suits the team, with its revenue-based royalty terms assessed against the project’s expected use.

These are starting points for a test, not recommendations detached from the game. The best choice is the engine in which your team can validate the defining interaction, satisfy the actual release requirements, and live with the costs and constraints documented in your comparison.
