To change an armor look in God of War Ragnarök, open the equipment menu, select an armor piece, and choose Edit Appearance (also called transmog). The feature is available from the beginning on PlayStation and PC; the old advice to upgrade gear to Level 9 first is no longer current. It changes how equipment looks, not Kratos’s face or body model.
Change an armor piece’s appearance
- Open the equipment or armor menu.
- Select the armor piece whose look you want to change.
- Choose the on-screen Edit Appearance prompt, then select an unlocked appearance.
- Apply the look. In the cited PlayStation control guide, press Square to open Edit Appearance and hold Square to apply the selected look. On PC or with a different control setup, follow the prompt shown in your game.
Changing appearance affects the equipment’s visual style, so you can use an owned look while retaining the gameplay build of the piece you have equipped. Only appearances you have unlocked or own can be selected.
Do you need Level 9 gear?
No. Santa Monica Studio’s January 30, 2025 Patch 8 notes say Edit Appearance no longer requires gear to be fully upgraded to Level 9 and is available from the beginning for all PlayStation and PC players.
Older guides reflect the original rule. In a November 2022 progression guide, Santa Monica Studio’s Grace Orlady wrote: “Once your equipment reaches Level 9, you’ll be able to apply any appearance currently in your inventory.” That launch-era condition was superseded by Patch 8, which removed the requirement.

What “skins” means in Ragnarök
The documented customization is for equipment and armor appearances. It is not a general character creator or a documented way to change Kratos’s face or body. If you mean changing how your armor looks, use Edit Appearance; if you mean changing Kratos’s character model, the sources do not establish such an option.
New Game+ armor appearance unlocks
Santa Monica Studio’s April 5, 2023 New Game+ announcement introduced 13 remixed appearances for existing armor, with new color combinations and styles. These are specific bonus looks, not a requirement for using Edit Appearance generally.

Those conditions apply to these New Game+ additions; they do not reinstate the old Level 9 requirement for the general appearance feature.
