Choose a gaming monitor by matching the resolution and refresh rate you want to the capabilities of your platform, then verify the monitor supports that combination on the exact input you will use. Check variable refresh rate (VRR) compatibility, screen size and viewing distance, and price before buying. A console’s maximum output is a platform capability, not a promise that every game will reach it.
Start with your platform and the games you play
First decide which system the monitor will serve most often and whether you will also connect another console or a PC. For PC, include your graphics card and the games you expect to run: there is no universal PC resolution or refresh-rate target, and a monitor’s maximum refresh rate does not mean your system will reach it in every game.
Next choose the resolution and refresh rate you actually want together. A monitor may support a high refresh rate at one resolution but not another, or may have different limits on different inputs. Check the model’s specifications for the specific HDMI or other connection you plan to use, rather than relying on a headline such as “4K 120 Hz.”
What each platform can output
| Platform | Published capability | What to verify on the monitor |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Sony lists 4K 120 Hz video output with a compatible display and connection. PS5 also supports 1440p output on compatible monitors and TVs; Sony specifies display support for 1440p at 60 Hz or at both 60 Hz and 120 Hz. Sony 4K guidance and PS5 features. | The input, cable, and settings must support the selected mode. For VRR, Sony specifies a compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR display; results vary by display and game. |
| Xbox Series X | Microsoft lists True 4K gaming resolution, a performance target of up to 120 FPS, one HDMI 2.1 port, HDMI VRR, AMD FreeSync, and Auto Low Latency Mode. These are system capabilities, not guarantees for every game. Xbox Series X specifications. | Confirm the monitor supports the resolution, refresh rate, and VRR feature you want over its HDMI connection. Do not assume every port has identical capabilities. |
| Nintendo Switch 2, docked | Nintendo lists up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, or 120 fps when 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440 is selected. TV output uses HDMI and supports HDR10. Nintendo says TV-mode VRR was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. Technical specifications and Switch 2 FAQ. | Check that the display supports the chosen resolution and refresh rate, and that any desired HDR or VRR feature is compatible. Features also depend on the game. |
| PC | No single resolution or refresh-rate recommendation applies to all PCs. Performance depends on the graphics hardware and game. | Compare your expected game performance with the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and check adaptive-sync compatibility for your graphics hardware and connection. |
The listed console figures describe supported output modes, not typical performance across a library. Nintendo’s FAQ notes that “Frame rate differs from game to game.”

- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Check the features that affect compatibility
Resolution and refresh rate at the same time
Match the monitor’s supported mode to your preferred resolution and refresh rate. The maximum printed on a product page may apply only to a particular resolution, input, or configuration. If you plan to use more than one device, check the specifications for each input you will connect.
VRR and adaptive sync
Variable refresh rate adjusts the display’s refresh timing to better match the system’s output. Support must line up across the console or PC, the monitor, and the connection. HDMI 2.1 alone is not enough to establish that a particular feature or mode works as you expect; verify the specific VRR support and input details. Sony says PS5 VRR results vary by display and game, and Nintendo’s Switch 2 VRR support is for TV mode following its September 10, 2026 system update.

Inputs, cables, and settings
Look for the exact port you need and confirm its limits. On PS5, Sony recommends checking the compatible screen, HDMI port, cable, and settings if 4K 120 Hz does not work. For a monitor shared between systems, do not assume a feature available on one input is available on every input.
Screen size, viewing distance, and budget
Choose a size that suits your desk or room, how far you sit from the screen, and what you can spend. There is no universally best size or price tier established here; those choices depend on your space and priorities. Compare overall value only after confirming the monitor meets the platform and mode requirements you care about.

A practical buying checklist
- Choose the primary platform. Note whether the monitor will also be used with another console or a PC; for PC, identify the graphics hardware and games.
- Set your preferred resolution and refresh rate. Decide which combination matters to you, rather than choosing from a refresh-rate number alone.
- Verify that combination on the intended input. Check the monitor’s current specifications for resolution and refresh-rate limits by port.
- Confirm VRR or adaptive-sync compatibility. Check the feature against your platform and connection instead of treating HDMI 2.1 as a blanket guarantee.
- Check the physical fit and cost. Consider viewing distance, available desk or room space, and budget.
- For a specific model, validate before purchase. Consult its current specifications and independent testing for the exact features you need; platform specifications alone do not establish that a particular monitor is a good choice.
