Use the game’s journal, map filters, and objective tools to keep known leads visible—but pair them with conversations, regional exploration, and a short record of unresolved clues. Map markers can help you follow a quest; they do not guarantee that every quest or discovery is marked. Because each game handles tracking and progression differently, check its help menu and missable-content guidance before major story choices.
Learn how your game tracks quests
Before setting out, check the journal, map, compass, and objective settings. Find out how to focus a quest, which kinds of objectives appear on the map, and what icons identify quest givers. A marker may be hidden by a filter or HUD setting rather than absent from the game.
For example, The Elder Scrolls Online’s official new-player guide explains that nearby available quests can appear on the compass and over quest givers, and that focusing a quest puts its objectives in the compass and tracker. Its support guidance for missing quest markers tells players to check that Objectives is selected in map filters and that Quest Tracker and Quest Giver Icons are enabled in HUD settings. Those exact labels apply to ESO; in another game, look for equivalent settings in its map, interface, or help menu.
Use markers as leads, not a complete checklist
Follow a marker when you have a known objective, but keep looking and talking to people as you travel. Some games place quests outside settlements, and some important clues come from dialogue rather than a neatly labeled map icon. ESO’s guide explicitly encourages exploring beyond towns to find quests. In its ELDEN RING gameplay guide, Bandai Namco describes Guidance of Grace as pointing players toward important things, while advising them to investigate map icons; it also warns that NPC dialogue is a common source of missed content because some NPC questlines advance as the player progresses.

Pay attention to unusual requests, repeated conversations, and NPCs who mention a place or person you have not encountered. A marker-led approach is efficient for completing objectives already recorded in the journal. Observation and conversation are better at surfacing leads that may not yet appear there.
Explore in short regional loops
Rather than crisscrossing the entire map for every small lead, choose a nearby cluster: a settlement, a landmark, and any visible points of interest around them. Follow roads and obvious routes before attempting a terrain shortcut; the straightest line on the map may not be the quickest route on the ground. Keep the loop flexible if a conversation or discovery points somewhere nearby.

Return to places when a new quest, clue, or traversal option gives you a reason to look again. In Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ubisoft describes exploration and backtracking as ways to find resources, side quests, characters, and shortcuts; its Eye of the Wanderer lets players save a screenshot to the map as a reminder of a location. In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the available tools include an Objective Board, optional Pathfinder, and scouts that can reveal more precise locations when clues are incomplete. These are examples of game-specific aids, not features to expect in every open world.
Keep a compact record of unresolved leads
If the journal is sparse—or if an NPC’s hint is easy to forget—make one short note after a useful conversation or quest update. Record:

- NPC name and where you met them
- What they asked, hinted, or promised
- The next place or action they mentioned
- Whether the lead seems resolved or still open
This can be a note on paper or in a device you already use; a dedicated notebook is not necessary. The aim is to preserve enough context to recognize a lead when you return to an area or encounter a related character.

Questlines can respond differently to story progress, so there is no universal safest order for side quests. Before a major transition—especially if you want to preserve every quest—check the game’s official help or a reliable, game-specific missables guide for that title and edition. General advice cannot identify which quests are permanently missable in an unnamed game. Do not assume that completing every visible marker first is either required or sufficient.

If an NPC is missing, stuck, or not offering the expected next step, review the journal and available map markers, then consult the game’s official support guidance. Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition support article, for instance, recommends checking the quest log and map quest markers and suggests exploring elsewhere before returning if an NPC is stuck or missing. That is title-specific troubleshooting, but it illustrates why a stalled lead is not always a sign that the quest is lost.

A repeatable routine for each new area
- At the start: Open the journal and map settings. Confirm the focused quest, active objective filters, and how quest-giver icons are displayed.
- On arrival: Note the settlement, major landmarks, visible symbols, and NPCs with requests or unusual dialogue.
- Choose a nearby route: Connect a few leads into a short loop, checking roads and obvious landmarks before attempting shortcuts.
- After a clue: Update the journal or write a brief note with the person, location, request, next step, and whether it remains unresolved.
- When a marker is missing: Check map filters and HUD settings before deciding the quest is unavailable.
- Before a major story transition: Consult official help or a game-specific missables reference if completing every quest matters to you.
