How to Choose a Gaming PC for Upcoming Open-World Games

Match a gaming PC to the open-world games you plan to play: check official requirements, pick a resolution target, and compare the exact CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD capacity.

Start with the open-world games you actually plan to play, then match a PC to each game’s published requirements and the resolution you want. There is no single “future-proof” specification: publishers set different CPU, GPU, memory and storage requirements, and some announced games do not yet have PC requirements.

Start with the games and your display target

Write down the games you expect to play and check each game’s current official PC requirements before comparing computers. Use the recommended tier as your main shopping reference if you want a more comfortable experience than a system aimed only at minimum requirements. A game’s listed minimum is not a promise of a particular frame rate or visual quality.

Decide whether you want to play at FHD, QHD or 4K. Those are distinct display targets, and a higher-resolution target is an important part of choosing the graphics hardware. Do not assume a PC that meets one game’s recommended requirements will deliver the same experience in another game.

Compare the components that shape the experience

Graphics card and processor

Compare the exact GPU and CPU models in a PC with the requirements for your intended games. Both components affect in-game frame rate, and Microsoft recommends a discrete graphics card for gaming. A component name alone is not a performance guarantee: without comparable test results for the specific PC and game, do not infer a particular frame rate.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

Memory

Check the installed RAM against the games’ requirements and account for what else you expect to run while gaming. Microsoft’s general gaming-buyer guidance gives a broad range of 16 GB to 64 GB; that is shopping guidance, not a requirement that applies to every game.

SSD capacity

Check the free capacity of the installed SSD against game install sizes and how many games you want installed at once. An open-world game can take substantial space: the Steam listing for Forza Horizon 6 specifies 167 GB of available storage and requires an SSD. Rockstar’s recommended specifications for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced also call for SSD storage.

If you expect to add or replace a drive, confirm the specific PC supports it: check the drive interface, form factor and available slot before buying an SSD. Capacity alone does not establish compatibility.

Use published requirements as examples, not universal rules

These specifications show why one game’s requirements should not be treated as a general gaming-PC standard. Store and publisher listings can change, so check the current page for the game you intend to play.

Game and source Minimum or platform information Recommended PC specifications
Forza Horizon 6 — Steam listing, accessed October 7, 2026 Intel i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600; 16 GB RAM; Nvidia GTX 1650, AMD RX 6500 XT or Intel Arc A380; 167 GB available storage; SSD required. Intel i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X; 16 GB RAM; Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti, AMD RX 6700 XT or Intel Arc A580; SSD required.
Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced — Rockstar Games Customer Support, updated December 10, 2025 Not stated here; see Rockstar’s current requirements page for the minimum tier. Windows 11; Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600; 16 GB dual-channel RAM; Nvidia RTX 3060 (8 GB) or Radeon RX 6600 XT (8 GB); SSD with DirectStorage compatibility.

The Forza figures are specifications for that game, not a forecast for every upcoming open-world release. Rockstar’s recommended figures above apply to GTA V Enhanced, not Grand Theft Auto VI.

Do not guess at PC requirements for games without them

At the time checked, Rockstar’s GTA VI game page gave a November 19, 2026 release date, while its platform page listed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, not PC. The cited official pages did not establish PC requirements. Do not treat a guessed configuration—or another game’s requirements—as confirmation that a particular PC will run GTA VI.

Microsoft’s published gaming guidance notes, “Game requirements may vary.” For a game without published PC specifications, choose a PC based on games with confirmed requirements and revisit the decision if the publisher later announces PC availability and requirements.

Choose a prebuilt or plan a compatible build

Prebuilt desktop

A prebuilt can simplify the purchase because it arrives as a complete system. Still, compare its exact CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD capacity with your game list; check the upgrade options and confirm the included components rather than relying on a broad label such as “gaming PC.”

Custom build

A custom PC requires compatibility across more than the headline CPU and GPU. Check the motherboard, case, power supply and cooling alongside RAM and storage, and include a monitor and other peripherals in your planning if you do not already own them. Intel’s guides cover both custom builds and prebuilt selection; the right route depends on whether you prefer a complete system or want to select and verify each part.

A practical buying checklist

  1. List your target games. Find each publisher’s or store’s current minimum and recommended PC specifications.
  2. Set your display goal. Choose FHD, QHD or 4K before comparing graphics cards.
  3. Match CPU and GPU models. Compare the actual components in each system with the requirements for your games; do not translate requirements into a promised frame rate.
  4. Check RAM and SSD space. Compare installed memory with game requirements and confirm that free SSD capacity covers the titles you want installed.
  5. Verify upgrades and compatibility. For a prebuilt, check supported drive upgrades; for a custom build, verify all components work together.
  6. Recheck volatile details before purchase. Game requirements, platforms and product availability can change. Use the current official listing rather than relying on an old specification or an unconfirmed prediction.
