Choose a console by starting with the games you want and how you plan to play them, then compare the cost of the whole setup—not just the hardware. Nintendo Switch 2 is the hybrid option for handheld and TV play; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are home-console families. There is no single best console for every budget: games, memberships, storage, accessories, and compatibility with what you already own can change the total.
Start with the kind of play you want
Choose Switch 2 if handheld play matters
Switch 2 can be used as a handheld or with a TV dock, making it the option to investigate if you want to play away from the television, share play in a household, or prioritize Nintendo games. Nintendo describes it as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go”; that is the company’s own product description, not independent evidence of value. Nintendo’s launch announcement dates that statement to April 2, 2025.
Choose between PS5 and Xbox for a TV-based setup
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are home-console families. If a particular PlayStation or Xbox game, franchise, or existing library is your main reason for buying, use that as your starting point. Check that each must-play title is available on the exact platform and edition you are considering; no platform-wide library claim can replace a current title-by-title check.
Compare current U.S. hardware prices carefully
The official U.S. manufacturer prices below were announced for the stated dates. They are MSRPs, not guaranteed retailer prices, and do not include tax. Bundles, stock, and sale prices can differ. For Xbox, the announcement gives the size of the increase but not the resulting U.S. price for each model, so a precise model-to-model price comparison cannot be made from that announcement alone.

Build a first-year budget, not just a console-price limit
Use this worksheet for your own likely costs:
Hardware + games you expect to buy in the next year + the membership you will actually use + needed storage and accessories − the value of compatible games or accessories you already own.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
There is no universal ownership-cost total: the answer depends on your game list, location, current prices, and which extras you need. Include only accessories with a use case, such as an extra controller for local multiplayer.
List the games before choosing a platform
Write down must-play games, co-op games, and titles for other people in the household. Confirm platform availability and edition details for each one. A lower hardware price is not much of a saving if it means buying a different set of games than you actually want.

Account for online and game-catalog memberships
Nintendo’s U.S. annual price table lists Switch Online at $19.99 for an individual basic membership and $34.99 for a family basic membership; Expansion Pack is $49.99 individual and $79.99 family. Nintendo notes that price varies by country and membership length. Check Nintendo’s membership information for current terms. Add a year or two only if you expect to use the plan. Do not assume that every game or feature requires a subscription. Verify current PlayStation and Xbox plan names, prices, and included games on their official pages before budgeting; prices and inclusions are not established here.
Count storage and accessories only when needed
Check usable storage and the expansion type supported by the specific console. For Switch 2, Nintendo says storage expansion uses microSD Express cards. Price any needed card, additional controller, headset, or charging accessory against your actual plans instead of adding generic extras to the budget.
Rank #4
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Check what carries over from a console you already own
Existing games and accessories can reduce the effective cost, but compatibility is specific to the product and title. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch software, while warning that some games may not work or may not be fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guide for the exact game or accessory before counting it as a saving.
- Switch Joy-Con and Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but many accessories do not carry over.
- The original Switch dock and standard microSD cards are not compatible with Switch 2.
- For any platform, verify the exact title, controller, headset, or other accessory rather than assuming compatibility from the brand alone.
Use the model and edition that fit your actual use
Switch 2: prioritize portability and Nintendo games
Investigate Switch 2 when handheld use, Nintendo’s games, or sharing play around the home is central. Add the cost of any storage or accessories you need, and do not count Switch games or hardware as savings until compatibility is confirmed.
PS5 Digital Edition or disc PS5: decide how you will get games
If the PlayStation library is the draw, compare the Digital Edition and standard PS5 against your real plans for physical games and media. The $50 U.S. MSRP difference announced for April 2, 2026 is a hardware-price gap, not proof of which edition will cost less over time.
Xbox Series S or Series X: verify the exact trade-offs
Compare Series S and Series X if Xbox games, your existing Xbox library, or Game Pass interest is driving the decision. Microsoft calls Series S its lowest-cost Xbox route. Best Buy’s guide describes Series X as having a 4K Blu-ray disc drive and Series S as a smaller digital-only model, but this is secondary feature context; verify current specifications with Microsoft’s Xbox console information before deciding. The exact post-increase U.S. model prices are not supplied in Microsoft’s August 2026 notice.
Quick Recap
A quick decision process for a strict budget
- Set a first-year maximum. Include hardware, games, any membership you will use, and necessary add-ons.
- Write down must-play games and household needs. Check which console supports each title and whether local multiplayer requires another controller.
- Choose the form factor. If handheld play is essential, investigate Switch 2; if the console will stay at a TV, compare PS5 and Xbox models based on games and edition needs.
- Check what you already own. Confirm title and accessory compatibility before subtracting their value from your budget.
- Compare exact local listings. Match region, model, storage, edition, and bundle, then recheck the total on the purchase date.
