Choose based first on the Steam games you actually play and where you want to play them. A Steam Deck or another SteamOS handheld suits portable, controller-first sessions; a conventional gaming PC is the more natural fit for desk or living-room play. Before choosing a handheld, check compatibility for your must-play games individually: SteamOS runs many Windows games through Proton, but not every title works equally well.
Start with the games you need to play
Write down the games you play most, especially multiplayer titles and games that use separate launchers or anti-cheat systems. Then check each game’s current Steam Deck compatibility information. Valve’s SteamOS documentation says Proton lets a large portion of the Steam library run on SteamOS. Valve also explains that its Verified program flags games that do not run well, so players can see what to expect.
A compatibility rating is a guide to the expected experience on SteamOS and Steam Deck, not a guarantee that every game in your library will behave identically. If a particular game is essential, base your decision on its own current status rather than the size of the overall compatible library.
Choose the way you want to play
Pick a handheld for portable, controller-first sessions
Steam Deck combines a screen and game controls in one portable PC gaming device. Valve describes its interface as gamepad-oriented. That format is well suited to travel, playing on the couch, or picking up a game away from a desk. SteamOS also includes quick suspend and resume, and a desktop mode when you want to use it more like a computer.

Pick a conventional gaming PC for a fixed setup
A desktop PC is the straightforward choice if you expect to play at a desk or through a living-room setup with a separate display and controls. A laptop is another PC-form option if you want mobility, but its battery runtime varies by model and workload; the sources cited here do not establish a general laptop-versus-handheld runtime comparison.
Neither form factor is universally better. This choice is about where and how you want to play, not a benchmark-based claim that one category is faster. Compare the actual PC you are considering with the handheld on the games and features that matter to you.

Weigh Steam Deck OLED battery life against your sessions
Valve lists a 50 Wh battery and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay for Steam Deck OLED, depending on the content and settings. Valve says that estimate assumes 30 FPS, 50% screen brightness, and 50% volume; higher settings can drain the battery faster. Treat the range as a manufacturer estimate, not a promised runtime for every game.
If you regularly play demanding games, use higher brightness or volume, or want higher frame rates, plan for shorter unplugged sessions than the estimate’s conditions imply. A desktop gaming PC requires mains power. For a laptop, check the specific model’s runtime claims for the workload you expect.

Compare storage and screen details
Steam Deck OLED is listed in 512 GB and 1 TB configurations. Both include a microSD card slot supporting UHS-I, so you can expand storage if you want more games installed at once. Choose internal capacity with your library and installation habits in mind; there is no one expansion size that fits everyone.
Valve lists the OLED screen as 7.4 inches, 1280 × 800, HDR, and up to 90 Hz. It also lists Wi-Fi 6E and USB-C display output. These are device specifications, not a comparison against every gaming PC display or connection: check the particular PC and monitor you would use if screen size, refresh rate, or external display setup is decisive.

Make the decision with a short checklist
- Must-play games: Check the current Steam Deck compatibility information for each one, including multiplayer games and titles with launchers or anti-cheat.
- Usual location: Frequent travel or couch play favors an integrated handheld; a desk or fixed big-screen setup favors a conventional PC.
- Unplugged play: Consider whether the OLED’s conditional 3–12-hour estimate fits your sessions, remembering that settings and game demands affect actual runtime.

- Support and availability: Valve says SteamOS compatibility with other AMD-powered PCs has improved with Steam and SteamOS 3.8 updates, but third-party device support can change. Check the current support details for a non-Deck device, and confirm regional configurations and availability before buying.
