“Record sales” on Steam can describe several different things: money spent on games, copies sold, player activity, or the number of games passing an earnings threshold. Steam’s live Top Sellers chart measures spending—not copies—and the available reported 2025 earnings figure is a threshold count, not proof that a particular game or the platform set an all-time sales record.
What does a Steam “record sales” figure measure?
The phrase is incomplete without a metric and time period. A platform revenue total, a live chart position, units sold, concurrent players, and the number of games reaching an earnings benchmark are different measures. They cannot be substituted for one another.
- Revenue: money spent, potentially across a game, its add-ons, and in-game transactions.
- Units: copies or purchases. A revenue chart does not disclose this count.
- Player activity: players online or playing; this is not a sales measure.
- Earnings threshold: the number of games that passed a stated revenue level over a stated period. It does not show the full distribution of earnings.
The available reporting does not establish a comparable all-time Steam sales series or its growth rate. It would therefore be misleading to attach a specific record or year-over-year increase to the phrase without a clearly defined metric and primary evidence.
What Steam’s live Top Sellers chart actually ranks
Valve’s Steamworks documentation explains that the chart rolls up player spending over the trailing 24 hours and gives extra weight to spending in the last three hours. It includes purchases of base games, DLC, and in-game transactions, so rank reflects revenue rather than copies sold or number of buyers. Valve’s Steamworks Top Sellers documentation describes the calculation.

That has several practical consequences:
- A game can rank highly because of add-on or in-game spending, even if its base game is not selling the most copies.
- A free-to-play game may appear when players spend on paid add-ons.
- Steam may combine multiple editions of a title to avoid duplicate chart entries.
- Steam offers country-specific charts for popular countries as well as a global view, so a title’s local and global positions can differ.
The rankings also respect content preferences. Steam allows users to filter out games they already own or free-to-play titles, meaning the displayed list can depend on the viewer’s settings.
What a Top Seller rank means for PC game buyers
A high position is a signal that a game or its associated content is attracting spending during the chart’s recent time window. It is not a review score, a value judgment, a copy-sales count, or a guarantee that the game suits a particular player.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Before buying, check the current price, the edition included, recent reviews, and whether the charted spending may be driven by paid DLC or in-game items. If you use a country-specific chart, remember that it reflects a different market scope from the global view. Treat ranking as a discovery clue, then evaluate the actual offer and game.
What the 2025 developer earnings figure says—and does not say
PC Gamer reported on March 11, 2026, that Valve said 5,863 games earned more than $100,000 in revenue on Steam in 2025. This is a Valve figure reported second-hand by PC Gamer from a GDC presentation, rather than a primary Valve slide available in the cited material. PC Gamer’s report gives the source and context.

The figure shows that thousands of games crossed that stated revenue threshold in that year. It does not mean that $100,000 is a typical game’s result, nor does it reveal how many earned substantially more or less. It is revenue, not a developer’s profit or take-home pay: the published threshold does not account for costs, taxes, refunds, or the applicable platform terms.

Steam’s commercial activity shows that it is a venue where many games can reach meaningful gross revenue, but an aggregate count cannot predict an individual release’s outcome. A developer evaluating performance should keep these distinctions separate:

- Measure: revenue, copies, and users answer different questions.
- Time window: a live chart’s weighted trailing hours cannot be compared directly with an annual threshold.
- Scope: global and country-level results describe different audiences.
- Revenue source: base-game purchases, DLC, and microtransactions can all affect a revenue ranking.
- Gross versus net: crossing a reported revenue threshold does not establish profit or payout after costs and other deductions.
Steam also documents an option for developers to organize third-party sale events on sale pages. Its 2025 sale-page presentation says to allow a few business days for review. That describes an available process, not a promised increase in visibility or sales. Valve’s Steam sale-page documentation outlines the event and review considerations.
