Choose a guitar controller by matching it to the exact game, platform, and console generation you plan to play on—not by appearance or brand alone. For a new option, the PDP Riffmaster is identified by the Clone Hero Wiki as a current guitar controller; for used gear, make sure the listing includes the model-matched receiver, adapter, or cable your setup needs.
Start with the game and platform
Before shopping, write down the rhythm game, the device you will play it on, and—if it is a console—the console generation. Support can vary between titles and console families. Clone Hero’s controller guide covers guitar controllers, while Activision’s classic Guitar Hero documentation describes differences by game and console.
Then check the exact guitar model and how it connects. A controller may need a particular wireless receiver, an adapter, a cable, or software to work with your target setup. Compatibility for one model or one tested configuration does not establish compatibility for every version.
Compare the options that fit your setup
| Buying path | What to check | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| New PDP Riffmaster | Choose the version for your platform and check the specific game’s support. | Convenient new-product route, but platform versions and PC behavior can differ. |
| Used Guitar Hero or Rock Band guitar | Confirm the exact model, receiver or cable, condition, and any required software. | Can suit a legacy setup, but an incomplete or worn instrument may need extra parts. |
| Receiver or adapter for a guitar you own | Match the accessory to the guitar model and destination platform; verify whether setup software is needed. | May restore a usable setup, but similar-looking accessories are not necessarily interchangeable. |
Buying a new controller
The Clone Hero Wiki names the PDP Riffmaster as a high-quality new guitar-controller option. GamesRadar+ describes versions for PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch / Switch 2. In its review, GamesRadar+ reports using the PS5 version with Clone Hero on PC and notes possible PC compatibility issues with the Xbox version. That is one reviewer’s account of particular configurations, not a guarantee for every computer, game, or controller revision. See the Riffmaster review and check current manufacturer and game support before ordering.
#1 Best Overall
- Guitar-shaped controller layout brings a dedicated format to rhythm gaming, making it suitable for setups, desktop play and music game sessions.
- Built-in tilt control provides an additional input method for supported rhythm games, giving players another way to interact during gameplay.
- Designed around guitar-style rhythm gameplay, making it suitable for players who enjoy music games, rhythm challenges and guitar controller setups.
- The controller fits home gaming desks, entertainment areas and dedicated rhythm game stations, providing a physical guitar-style interface for compatible software.
- This is a third-party accessory. Model and software references are used only to indicate compatibility and do not imply affiliation, sponsorship or endorsement.
Match the version to the platform you intend to use; do not assume that a controller sold for one console will behave identically on another or on PC. Product availability and prices change, so check a current listing rather than treating an older price observation or sale as a lasting price.
Buying a used legacy guitar
Used Guitar Hero and Rock Band instruments can be a practical choice when the model matches your game and platform. The Clone Hero Wiki points to local second-hand sources and warns that refurbished or modified controllers can vary in quality; it also cautions that used originals on Amazon may be overpriced. Compare the cost of a complete working setup, not just the guitar body.

- Ask whether setup requires software or a mapper, and whether it must remain running during play.
The Clone Hero receiver reference maps receiver compatibility to particular guitar models and documents incompatibilities. For example, it says an Xbox 360 receiver works with Xbox 360 five-fret Guitar Hero and Rock Band instruments, but not Rock Band 4 or Guitar Hero Live guitars. Treat that as model-specific guidance, not a general rule for other receivers or platforms.
Match receivers and adapters carefully
Do not choose a receiver just because its shape or connector looks right. Some similarly shaped Guitar Hero receivers are not interchangeable; check the compatibility entry for the exact guitar and receiver before purchasing.

Console adapters can also be essential. For Rock Band 4 instruments on PS4, Epic Games Support distinguishes newer Bluetooth pairing from older instruments that use the original adapter, stating: “Legacy controllers require the original adapter.” Follow Epic’s PS4 instrument-controller syncing instructions for the relevant instrument type. That instruction concerns the specified Rock Band 4 and PS4 setup; it does not mean one adapter works with every legacy guitar.

Fret arrangements and extra button rows vary between guitar models. There is no universally best layout established here: comfort depends on your hands and play style. If possible, try the instrument or compare its control layout with one you already know before committing, especially when choosing between different generations or styles.
