Start by writing down three games you need to play on a handheld. The right device is the one that supports those exact games, fits your total budget, and is practical for the trips you actually take—not necessarily the one with the biggest screen or most powerful hardware.
Start with the games you want to play
Make a short list of three must-play games, then check which platform they support and how well they work on the specific device you are considering. A platform name alone is not a compatibility guarantee: individual PC games can differ in controller support, performance, launchers, and setup.
- Nintendo exclusives: If the games drawing you to handheld play are Nintendo titles, Switch 2 is the natural platform to investigate. Check Nintendo’s official Nintendo page.
- Steam library: If you already own the games on Steam, Steam Deck OLED is a direct candidate. Check each title in Valve’s Steam Deck Verified resource rather than assuming every Steam game works equally well.
- Other PC storefronts or services: Windows handhelds may suit players whose games and launchers work on the exact model they want. AMD’s handheld PC overview names devices including ROG Xbox Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw, and Steam Deck; the category does not make their operating systems, storefronts, controls, or compatibility interchangeable.
For any platform, check whether your games can be played locally or require streaming, whether they work offline, and whether setup involves installing another launcher or signing in to additional services. For a Windows handheld, verify the precise model, operating system, storefront access, and support for each must-play title before buying.

Treat manufacturer product pages as specifications and product descriptions, not independent head-to-head performance tests.
PlayStation Portal is a different kind of choice: TechRadar describes it as streaming-only and internet dependent. Consider it when the need is remote play from an existing PlayStation and your connection is suitable, not as a substitute for a locally playable handheld PC or console.

Work out the full cost before choosing
There is no verified, consistent current price comparison here across these devices and regions, so a dated US price would not be a sound basis for a worldwide recommendation. Check the price available where you live, then add the costs needed to make the system work for your games and travel.
- Games: Include the titles you plan to buy, not just games already in your library. Confirm that the version you want is available for the selected platform.
- Storage: Compare the device’s included capacity with your likely library. Expansion depends on device support and limits; verify the exact model’s requirements before purchasing storage.
- Travel protection: A case can protect a device in a bag, but cases are model-specific. Match its dimensions and cutouts to the exact handheld and configuration.
- Charging: Consider whether you will need a travel charger or power bank. A power bank is useful only if its charging output is suitable for the device.
Use the same checklist for each candidate: device price in your region, must-play games, any storage expansion, a correctly fitting case if needed, and charging equipment for the trips you take. This makes a lower upfront price less likely to hide costs that matter to you.

Match portability and battery to your trips
Think about the whole trip rather than a device’s screen size alone: how long you will play between outlets, whether you can carry a charger, whether you need offline access, and how much space the handheld takes in your bag. The reported weights and screen sizes above make the Switch 2 lighter than the Steam Deck OLED in TechRadar’s guide, while its screen is listed as larger; decide which trade-off matters more for your hands and carry space.
Battery figures are especially easy to misread. TechRadar’s reported ranges are not a controlled comparison using the same games and settings, and intensive games can shorten runtime. If you expect long sessions away from power, check current device guidance and plan around the games you actually play rather than treating the top of a published range as guaranteed.

Offline play also depends on the game and platform, not just the handheld. Before a trip, verify that the specific games you plan to play support offline use and complete any necessary downloads, updates, or account setup while you have a reliable connection.
Choose according to your priorities
- Choose Switch 2 if Nintendo’s exclusive games are the reason you want a handheld. Confirm the titles you care about and decide whether the listed size and battery range suit your travel pattern.
- Consider Steam Deck OLED if your must-play games are in Steam and Valve’s compatibility information supports the games and experience you expect.
- Consider a Windows or other PC handheld if your library depends on particular PC storefronts or services. Compare the exact model’s operating system, controls, game support, and current regional configuration rather than buying based on the broad “PC handheld” label.
- Consider PlayStation Portal if remote play from your existing PlayStation is the specific use case and your internet connection can support streaming.
After choosing a platform, check accessories against the exact device model. A fitted case, suitable charging option, or supported storage expansion can solve a real travel or capacity problem; none is a universal extra to buy automatically.
