Choose a loot shooter by the play pattern you will repeat, not by its rarity colors or “live-service” label. If you want coordinated, raid-sized teams and a gear-and-perk progression system, Destiny 2 is the stronger fit on the official evidence available here. If you prefer four-player boss encounters, solo-capable dungeons, and character-focused combat customization, The First Descendant may suit you better. The right choice still depends on how much group coordination you want, which endgame activities you enjoy, how deeply you want to optimize builds, and what you are willing to verify and pay for in a changing storefront.

Start with the loop you will actually play

Loot shooters combine third-person or first-person combat with repeatable missions, randomized or tiered rewards, and long-term character improvement. The key question is not which title has “more content” in the abstract. It is whether its recurring activities fit your available time, your friends list, and your tolerance for optimization and purchases.

  • Co-op fit: Do you normally play alone, with one or two friends, or with a coordinated group large enough for raid mechanics?
  • Endgame loop: Would you rather repeat raids, selectable-difficulty activities, dungeons, or boss encounters to improve your loadout?
  • Build meaning: Do gear tiers, perks, mods, traits, and character abilities create genuinely different play styles, or are you mainly chasing a higher number?
  • Monetization: What is the current entry price, which activities or expansions require payment, what is optional, and does spending affect progression?

The official material for Destiny 2 and The First Descendant answers those questions unevenly. It gives a solid basis for comparing group formats, advertised endgame structures, and broad build philosophies, but it does not establish a complete, like-for-like cost audit or a definitive ranking of every loot shooter.

Quick comparison: what the official descriptions establish

Decision axis Destiny 2 The First Descendant Best match if you prefer…
Co-op scale Bungie’s Activities help guide describes raids as typically requiring fireteams of up to six. The PlayStation listing highlights four-player Colossi battles; Nexon’s developer notes describe solo and co-op dungeons with difficulty scaling by participant count. Raid-sized coordination: Destiny 2. Smaller boss squads or solo-capable dungeon runs: The First Descendant.
Repeatable endgame The Portal combines activities with selectable difficulty and modifiers. Bungie says higher difficulty generally offers better gear, Power, and currencies. Nexon describes Reclamation Operations as endgame dungeons with distinct hard-mode rewards. Structured activity variety and modifiers: Destiny 2. Dungeon-and-boss progression: The First Descendant.
Build expression Gear tiers add mechanical and buildcrafting options; Bungie also warns that synergistic perks on lower-tier gear can beat a higher-tier item. Official product copy emphasizes unique character combat styles and customizable characters, but the material here does not provide a full, directly comparable build-system analysis. Perk, mod, and gear-synergy optimization: Destiny 2. Character-style customization as a broad design priority: The First Descendant.
Monetization evidence The supplied official material does not establish a comparable current total cost. PlayStation and Xbox listings show paid Caliber currency add-ons, with prices varying by platform and region. Neither game can be declared cheaper from these facts alone; inspect the live store and access requirements where you play.

Use the table as a screening tool, then read the sections below for the practical consequences of each difference.

Co-op fit: match the game to your group

Destiny 2: raid-scale coordination is a defining option

Bungie Help’s “Activities” guide describes raids as activities that typically require a fireteam of up to six. That size changes the social commitment: a raid group may need scheduling, voice communication, role assignments, and enough players to replace someone who disconnects. If your favorite gaming sessions involve learning encounters with a regular team, the format gives you room for that kind of coordination.

That does not mean every session requires six people. The same ecosystem includes other activities surfaced through the Portal, so a player can choose content with different difficulty and group expectations. Before committing to a raid-focused routine, check the current activity description and matchmaking rules for the specific node you intend to run; “co-op” is not a single requirement across the game.

The First Descendant: four-player Colossi and flexible dungeon participation

The PlayStation product page advertises four-player Colossi battles, placing its headline boss encounters in a smaller squad format than a typical raid team. Nexon’s “Dev Note vol.10” describes Reclamation Operations as dungeons that can be played solo or cooperatively, with difficulty scaling according to the number of participants. That combination is useful if your group is often one to four people or if you want the option to attempt dungeon content alone rather than recruit a full team.

  • ANTI-STATIC: great for cleaning and wiping down your gaming gear and electronics leaving behind no visible residue
  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

The Xbox listing also advertises cross-platform co-op. Treat that as a platform feature claim, not a guarantee that every activity uses identical matchmaking rules. Read the activity’s current queue and party-size information before planning a cross-platform session.

How to test your own co-op preference

  1. Count your reliable players. If you usually have five or six people available, raid-scale content is a realistic option. If you usually have one to three, a four-player ceiling or solo-capable dungeon structure may reduce scheduling friction.
  2. Decide whether matchmaking is acceptable. A group-size number does not tell you whether the activity supports public matchmaking, private launch, or a pre-made team. Verify that label on the activity screen.
  3. Separate “can play solo” from “is balanced for solo.” Nexon’s notes describe solo and co-op dungeon options and participant-based scaling. That establishes the design intent, not a promise that every build or encounter feels equally efficient alone.
  4. Identify your coordination tolerance. If you enjoy callouts and assigned mechanics, raid-sized content can be a feature. If you want to log in for a short, low-commitment run, select activities with smaller groups or solo access.

Endgame: judge the repeatable reward loop, not the label

What Destiny 2 gives you to repeat

Bungie’s Activities help page presents the Portal as a way to select activities, difficulty settings, and modifiers. It says higher difficulty generally awards better gear, Power, and currencies. The practical implication is a ladder of intentional challenges: you can increase pressure through settings or modifiers, then pursue rewards that justify the added risk.

Raids add a different type of repetition. Their appeal is not only a drop at the end; learning an encounter, refining team roles, and executing a clean run are part of the progression. Bungie’s “Dev Insights – Return of the Director” also discusses changes to activity reward pools and difficulty, so the exact list of available rewards is a live-service detail that should be checked in the current activity interface.

What The First Descendant gives you to repeat

Nexon’s “Dev Note vol.10” identifies Reclamation Operations as endgame content and distinguishes hard-mode rewards. That points to a dungeon-centered loop in which you repeat missions at a higher challenge level to pursue a different reward table or improved drops. The same developer material describes difficulty scaling with participant count, allowing the activity to accommodate different party sizes.

The product listings’ emphasis on Colossi battles adds a boss-encounter path alongside dungeon runs. The official descriptions establish those formats and reward intentions; they do not, by themselves, prove which game has greater drop rates, faster progression, or a more satisfying long-term grind.

Questions to ask before investing dozens of hours

  • What is the first activity you will repeat after the campaign? Name it specifically: a raid, Portal challenge, Reclamation Operation, or Colossus fight.
  • Does difficulty change the decision-making? Modifiers, enemy behavior, time pressure, and team roles matter more than a simple enemy-health increase.
  • What does a successful run pay out? Look for the exact gear slot, currency, crafting component, or unique reward you need, and confirm whether it is tied to a weekly lockout or an unlimited queue.
  • Can you vary the route? A sustainable endgame offers multiple activities or modifiers so that progression does not depend on one mission you dislike.
  • How often can the loop change? Bungie and Nexon both describe systems that can be updated. Treat current reward pools and availability as provisional rather than permanent.

Build variety: look for meaningful choices, not just higher tiers

Destiny 2 makes gear synergy central to evaluation

In “Dev Insights – Weapons and Gear Tiering,” published July 2, 2025, the Destiny 2 Team at Bungie wrote: “New loot to chase in Destiny 2 should provide meaningful choices and upgrades to your arsenal.” The article explains that tiers can add mechanical and buildcrafting options, including enhanced traits or other improvements. This makes a drop valuable for what it enables, not merely for its color or position on a ladder.

Bungie also gives an important warning: synergistic perks on lower-tier gear can outperform a higher-tier item. In practice, a weapon or armor piece that completes a coherent interaction may be preferable to a nominally superior drop that does nothing for your build. When comparing loot, inspect the whole combination of perks, mods, traits, and abilities rather than replacing every item with the highest displayed tier.

The First Descendant emphasizes character identity, but the evidence is broader

The official product copy for The First Descendant highlights unique character combat styles and customizable characters. That is useful evidence about the game’s presentation: choosing a character is intended to influence how combat feels. It is not a full specification of its modules, weapons, stat interactions, or the number of viable endgame configurations.

Do not assume that “customizable characters” means the same thing as Destiny 2’s gear-and-perk optimization. If your purchase decision depends on deep loadout theorycrafting, inspect the current in-game menus, official build documentation, and recent patch notes for the exact systems you care about.

A practical build-diversity audit

  1. List the decisions you can change. Count character abilities, weapons, armor or modules, perks, mods, and traits that materially alter combat.
  2. Separate cosmetic choice from mechanical choice. A skin changes appearance; a perk that alters cooldowns, damage type, or ability behavior changes a build.
  3. Check interaction density. The most expressive systems let several choices reinforce one another, as Bungie’s perk-synergy example illustrates.
  4. Test replacement pressure. If every new drop simply has a larger number, the system may be a vertical climb. If a lower-tier item can remain optimal because its effects fit your setup, the chase is more strategic.
  5. Confirm readability. A wide build menu is only useful when descriptions, stat changes, and activation conditions are clear enough to compare.

Monetization: separate access, content, cosmetics, and currency

“Free” or “paid” is too vague for a live-service comparison. Audit four separate questions:

Cost question What to verify Why it matters
Entry Is the base game currently listed at no charge or as a paid product on your platform and in your region? An introductory price can change, and console, PC, and regional storefronts may differ.
Access gates Which expansions, seasons, dungeons, characters, or activities require a separate purchase? A low entry cost does not describe the amount needed to access the endgame you want.
Optional purchases Which cosmetics, bundles, passes, or convenience items are sold? Optional spending should not be confused with mandatory access.
Virtual currency What does each currency buy, what bundles are offered, and do prices vary by platform or region? Bundle sizes can make the displayed item price different from the amount you must actually purchase.
Progression effect Do purchases provide power, acceleration, or only appearance and account services? This determines whether spending changes competitive or endgame progress.

What is established for The First Descendant

The PlayStation and Xbox listings show paid Caliber add-ons and identify US storefront pricing, while noting that the available offers are platform-specific. Those listings establish that real-money currency bundles exist; they do not establish the total amount a player must spend, the complete catalog of monetized items, or a direct cost comparison with Destiny 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before purchasing, open the store on the platform you will use and record the current currency bundles, taxes, regional prices, and any access requirement for the activities you intend to play. Do not convert one displayed Caliber bundle into a claim about a game-wide monthly cost.

What remains unresolved for Destiny 2

The official material available for this comparison does not provide a like-for-like current total for the base game, expansions, seasons, optional items, and currencies. That is not evidence that its total is lower or higher. It means you should price the exact content path you want: the current entry listing, the expansion containing your target activities, and any recurring pass or bundle shown in your region.

Build a personal budget before you commit

  1. Write down the activities you consider essential, rather than every item advertised in the store.
  2. Check whether each activity is included in the current base listing, an expansion, a season, or a separate bundle.
  3. Mark cosmetic and convenience purchases as optional unless the game explicitly makes them required for your goal.
  4. Record the currency bundle that actually covers your intended purchase; ignore the illusion of a low unit price if bundles leave you with unused currency.
  5. Recheck the storefront immediately before buying, because live-service prices, bundles, and access rules change.

Which player should lean toward which game?

Lean toward Destiny 2 when…

  • You want the option of coordinated, raid-sized fireteams.
  • You enjoy selecting difficulty and modifiers to create a more demanding repeatable activity.
  • You care about how perks, mods, traits, and gear interactions combine into a build.
  • You are willing to inspect current activity reward pools and access requirements rather than assuming the roster is permanent.

Lean toward The First Descendant when…

  • Your regular group is closer to four players than six.
  • You want advertised Colossi boss battles and dungeons designed for solo or cooperative participation.
  • You prefer selecting among characters with distinct combat styles and customization.
  • You are comfortable checking a live storefront for Caliber bundles and verifying the current cost in your region.

Do not choose on these assumptions

  • Do not treat a larger player cap as proof that every activity is better with more people.
  • Do not equate a hard-mode label with a superior reward loop without checking the actual reward table.
  • Do not assume the highest gear tier is always the strongest option; synergy can matter more.
  • Do not infer a complete monetization total from one virtual-currency listing.
  • Do not treat launch plans or product-page descriptions as hands-on proof of balance, matchmaking quality, or long-term enjoyment.

A five-minute decision procedure

  1. Describe your normal session. Write “solo,” “one to three friends,” or “organized team.” Choose the game whose advertised activity formats do not force you into a different social schedule.
  2. Name your endgame activity. Pick the specific repeatable format you would still enjoy after the campaign. If you cannot name one, postpone the purchase and inspect current activity menus first.
  3. Choose your build philosophy. Select gear-and-perk interaction if you want to theorycraft around synergies; select character-style variety if that is the more important distinction for you. Confirm the detailed system in current documentation before relying on broad marketing language.
  4. Run the access audit. Price the exact activities you need, not the cheapest entry listing or the largest currency bundle.
  5. Timestamp your decision. Record the platform, region, date, and activity names you checked. Revisit that record after a major season, expansion, or store revision.

How to keep the choice current

Both titles are live-service games. Activity rosters, reward pools, difficulty settings, matchmaking behavior, store bundles, and access gates can change after launch. Bungie’s activity and reward documentation and Nexon’s developer notes describe systems and intentions at particular points in time; the PlayStation and Xbox pages advertise features and add-ons as listed for those storefronts. None of those pages is a permanent guarantee of future availability.

For a current decision, check the official activity page, the in-game Portal or dungeon description, the platform store for your region, and the latest developer update on the day you install or purchase. This is especially important if you are returning after a break or asking whether a new game is worth trying as a burnt-out live-service player: your preferred loop may be unchanged while the access rules and reward structure have moved.

Bottom line

There is no universal best loot shooter in this comparison. Choose Destiny 2 for raid-scale coordination and a documented emphasis on gear, perk, and build synergy. Choose The First Descendant for four-player Colossi encounters, solo-or-co-op dungeon intent, and character-centered combat variety. For either game, make the final call only after confirming the current endgame activity, the exact access path, and the storefront cost on your platform.
