How to Choose a New Game Franchise to Follow

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Choose a franchise by the experience you want to repeat, not by its sales reputation or online noise. Define whether you want a continuing story, a world to explore, competitive matches, cooperative sessions, creative building, puzzles, or sport. Then shortlist series, verify their entry point and availability, sample one game at low cost, and decide whether the time, money, platform and social commitment fit your life.

A franchise is a long-term play-style and time commitment. The method below helps you make that commitment deliberately even when you have not chosen a genre, platform, budget or candidate series.

Start with the experience you want to repeat

“What should I play next?” is too broad to produce a useful answer. Begin with the activity you want to do repeatedly. A series that is excellent at one activity can be a poor fit for another, even when both are highly regarded.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Choose the primary activity

  • Follow a story: You want characters, plot progression and a satisfying sequence of chapters. Check whether the series is designed as a connected narrative or as mostly separate stories.
  • Explore a world: You value discovery, travel, secrets, environmental detail and the freedom to set your own pace.
  • Compete: You want a skill-based loop, ranked play, matches, seasons or leaderboards. Consider whether you can accept practice, losses and a changing competitive environment.
  • Cooperate: You want a reliable reason to play with friends or strangers. Look at group size, communication demands and whether the game remains enjoyable when your usual partners are unavailable.
  • Build or manage: You prefer planning, optimization, construction, collecting or running a system over a scripted campaign.
  • Solve puzzles: You want deduction, logic, experimentation or mastery of a ruleset rather than reflex-heavy action.
  • Play a sport or race: You want repeatable events, competition and incremental improvement. Check how much of the appeal depends on current teams, leagues, cars or seasonal content.

PlayStation’s editorial collections use activity and audience labels such as couch multiplayer, cozy games, family games, MMOs, racing and team shooters. That kind of organization is useful because it starts with the session you want, rather than with a publisher’s release order.

Decide how much structure you want

Some players want a finite story they can complete and remember. Others want a world that becomes a recurring hobby through expansions, updates, seasons or an active competitive population. Neither is inherently better. The important question is whether you want an ending or an ongoing obligation.

  • Finite commitment: Favor a clear campaign, a defined conclusion and a manageable number of entries. A series can still have optional content, but you should be able to stop without feeling that you have abandoned a service.
  • Ongoing commitment: Favor a stable core loop, regular reasons to return and a community large enough for your preferred mode. Check how updates, seasons or expansions affect cost and time.
  • Mixed commitment: Some series offer a self-contained campaign plus optional multiplayer or post-launch content. This can be a good compromise if you want a complete experience first and a hobby afterward.

Set your social preference

Write down whether you normally play alone, with a fixed group, with matchmaking, or in a mixture of those modes. A nominally cooperative franchise may require scheduled sessions, voice communication or a group with similar progression. A competitive franchise may be technically playable solo but still demand regular practice and tolerance for a demanding community.

Build a shortlist without letting algorithms decide for you

Use several discovery channels so that one recommendation system does not define your options. A useful shortlist contains a small number of genuinely different candidates, not every game that shares a genre tag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use storefront discovery tools

Steam describes several ways to discover games: the Discovery Queue, friend suggestions, curator recommendations and actions to wishlist, follow or ignore a title. Use those tools to gather possibilities, then inspect each series manually.

Steam also describes a recommender that learns patterns from player behavior and exposes controls related to release windows and popularity. Its explanation says tags can filter displayed results but are not used by the underlying model. Treat these systems as idea generators, not as evidence that a franchise matches your tone, entry point or budget.

Use platform editorial collections

Platform-curated pages can reveal categories you would not search for directly. Browse by activity, audience and multiplayer setting, then record the actual games that interest you. Editorial placement is a discovery aid; it is not a guarantee of quality for your particular preferences or of current access in your region.

Ask people who know your habits

A trusted friend can provide context an algorithm cannot: how much repetition is involved, whether the story starts slowly, how demanding the controls feel, and whether the community suits a newcomer. Ask for a specific entry point and a reason it matches your stated activity. “You will love it” is less useful than “this has short cooperative missions and can be played without a fixed schedule.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record why each candidate made the list

For every series, write one sentence beginning with “I might follow this because…” If you cannot complete that sentence with a concrete activity, tone or social reason, remove the candidate. A shortlist built from vague popularity is difficult to compare later.

Compare each franchise on the same decision axes

Use identical questions for every candidate. This prevents a visually impressive series from receiving a more generous evaluation than a less familiar one.

Axis Question to answer Evidence to check
Activity and tone What do you do most often, and does the mood fit you? Gameplay descriptions, unedited footage, reviews that discuss the actual loop, and your own sample session.
Newcomer entry Can you start with the current or most accessible game? Whether earlier plots are required, whether systems are explained, and whether a remaster, remake or standalone chapter exists.
Solo, co-op or competitive fit Does the social structure match how you really play? Mode requirements, group size, matchmaking, progression sharing and whether solo content is substantial.
Platform and region Can you play the specific entry on your device in your country? Current storefront listing, edition details, regional restrictions, required accounts and online-service status.
Time to sample How quickly can you learn whether the loop works for you? Demo, trial, borrowed copy, a game you already own or a subscription catalog entry.
Total cost to follow What must you buy to reach the experience you want? Base games, expansions, required online access, optional purchases and the number of entries you actually intend to play.
Release and community pattern Do you want a finished archive or an active series to keep up with? Release cadence, update model, player activity in your preferred mode and your tolerance for waiting.

These axes are a decision framework, not a validated ranking formula. Give extra weight to the factors that can make a choice impossible for you. For example, a perfect story match still fails if the required platform is unavailable, and a great competitive game still fails if you only have occasional time for play.

Check the entry point before buying the whole history

“Follow the franchise” does not necessarily mean starting at the first release. Series use several continuity models, and identifying the model can save money and frustration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct sequential continuity

In a direct sequence, later entries assume knowledge of earlier events or systems. Find out whether the publisher provides a recap, whether a collection is available, and which earlier games are essential rather than merely related. If the full sequence is a major time commitment, estimate it before purchasing multiple games.

Mostly independent installments

Some franchises share a setting, mechanics or themes while telling separate stories. These are often easier to enter. Choose the installment whose activity and tone best match you instead of assuming release order is mandatory.

Reboots, remakes and soft resets

A newer version may be designed for newcomers while retaining names or ideas from older games. Confirm whether it is a retelling, a continuation or simply a technical update. Marketing labels can be ambiguous; the store description, a spoiler-light review and a sample are safer guides.

Live or season-based continuity

For an ongoing game, the relevant entry point may be the current version rather than the first release. Check what content is included today, what has rotated out, whether progression carries between seasons and what purchases are required to participate in the mode you want.

Sample the loop before making a long-term commitment

The goal of sampling is not to finish a game. It is to answer whether the controls, pacing, presentation and social structure make you want another session.

  1. Use something you already own. Check your library for an entry or a free introductory portion. This removes the first-purchase risk.
  2. Look for a demo or trial. A short official sample is especially valuable for testing camera behavior, input feel, accessibility options and performance on your device.
  3. Borrow a copy where practical. Borrowing can reveal whether the series works for you without converting curiosity into a permanent purchase.
  4. Use a subscription catalog only after checking the exact title. Xbox describes Game Pass as a catalog that changes as games are added over time. The presence of a subscription does not establish that a particular franchise entry is included, available in your region or present on your device. Check the current listing and terms before planning around it.
  5. Stop when you have enough evidence. If the core loop is clearly wrong for you, do not continue merely because the series is popular or because you have already spent money on an earlier entry.

What to test during a sample

  • How quickly the game lets you perform the activity that attracted you.
  • Whether the tone remains comfortable after the introduction.
  • How much tutorial, travel, inventory management or repetition sits between meaningful decisions.
  • Whether solo play, cooperative play or matchmaking behaves as you expected.
  • Whether the interface, difficulty options, text size, subtitles and control settings meet your needs.
  • Whether performance and loading behavior are acceptable on your specific hardware.

Verify platform, region and access details

Availability is a property of a specific game, edition, platform and region—not of a franchise in the abstract. Before committing, open the current store page for the exact entry you plan to play.

  • Confirm the supported platform and whether the listing is for the same generation or device you own.
  • Check whether the game is sold, streamed or included through a catalog, and whether that status can change.
  • Verify regional release, language and age-rating information where those affect your decision.
  • Check whether online modes require a platform subscription, a separate account or persistent service access.
  • Confirm which edition contains the campaign, expansions or multiplayer features you expect.
  • Check accessibility settings and controller or keyboard support before purchase if they are essential to you.

Do not infer availability from a trailer, an old article or a friend in another country. Catalogs, prices, terms and service status change.

Estimate the real time and money commitment

The first game’s price is only one part of following a franchise. Consider the path you are actually likely to take.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate sampling cost from completion cost

Sampling may require one inexpensive entry, a demo or access to a catalog. Completion may require several games, expansions, downloadable content, online access or a stronger hardware setup. Decide which outcome you want: testing the series, completing one story, or keeping up with the entire release line.

Map your available time

Ask how often you can play and whether your sessions are predictable. A narrative series can accommodate irregular sessions if it allows saving and recap tools. A scheduled cooperative or competitive series may punish missed sessions or require a regular group. Pick the franchise whose demands match your calendar, not your idealized free time.

Account for optional pressure

Ongoing games can create pressure to return for limited-time events, seasons or rotating rewards. That may be motivating or stressful. If you prefer a relaxed hobby, favor a structure that lets you return without feeling behind.

Match the community and release pattern to your temperament

An active community can make a franchise rewarding through guides, discussion and reliable matchmaking. It can also introduce noise, spoilers, competitive pressure or a fear of missing out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an archive or a living series

  • Archive-oriented choice: You can play at your own pace and judge the series by its completed body of work.
  • Living-series choice: You gain shared events and current discussion but accept patches, balance changes, server dependence and an evolving cost structure.

Check whether the release cadence suits you

A frequent release schedule can keep a series visible but may make it difficult to catch up. A slower schedule gives you time to finish older entries but may leave long gaps. Decide whether waiting, replaying or switching to another activity during gaps is acceptable.

Use a simple scoring worksheet

After sampling and checking access, score each candidate against the same criteria. A qualitative scale such as low, medium and high is sufficient; the value is in making trade-offs visible.

Candidate Activity and tone Entry clarity Social fit Access certainty Sample effort Long-term fit
Series A Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment
Series B Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment
Series C Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment Record your judgment

Do not treat the worksheet as an objective measurement. Its purpose is to expose a disqualifier, such as no suitable platform, an unsuitable social model or an entry point that demands more time than you have.

A practical decision process from curiosity to commitment

  1. Write your desired repeatable experience. Use one sentence naming the activity, tone and preferred social mode.
  2. Set boundaries. Note your platform, region, available time, maximum sampling spend and tolerance for ongoing updates or competition.
  3. Build a short list. Use storefront tools, platform collections and trusted recommendations. Remove candidates that do not match the activity.
  4. Identify the best entry point. Determine whether continuity is sequential, independent, rebooted or live-service based.
  5. Verify current access. Check the exact edition, platform, region, catalog status and online requirements.
  6. Sample the core loop. Use an owned game, demo, borrowed copy or a currently available subscription title. Test the activities and settings that matter to you.
  7. Compare trade-offs. Use the same axes for every candidate and eliminate any series that fails a non-negotiable requirement.
  8. Choose a first commitment, not a lifetime contract. Buy or access the one entry that provides the clearest test of the series. Reassess after you have enough evidence to know whether you want more.
  9. Follow the series where useful. Use the storefront’s follow feature or an equivalent official option so that future releases and availability changes are easier to notice.

How to follow a franchise after choosing it

Following is useful only after you have selected a series and confirmed that the notification channel is relevant to you. Steam states that following a game or franchise can send email notifications when a game in that followed franchise releases or enters or exits Early Access. Its storefront can also surface related games in the series.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by popularity alone

Problem: A famous series may use a loop, tone or social model you dislike.

Correction: Name the activity you want first and sample the actual loop before considering reputation.

Assuming release order is mandatory

Problem: You buy several older entries without knowing whether they are required.

Correction: Determine the continuity model and identify the most newcomer-friendly starting point.

Confusing a catalog with permanent ownership

Problem: You plan a long campaign around a title whose subscription availability changes.

Correction: Verify the title’s current listing and have a fallback plan if access ends.

Ignoring the social requirement

Problem: A game is enjoyable only with a group, but your group cannot meet regularly.

Buying a complete backlog before testing one entry

Problem: You increase cost and create pressure to continue a series that does not fit.

Correction: Make the smallest reasonable first commitment and expand only after the core loop earns it.

Overvaluing recommendation labels

Problem: Similar tags or a recommendation feed are treated as proof of a tonal or mechanical match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Use recommendations to discover candidates, then check entry point, tone, access and sample evidence yourself.

Which kind of player benefits from which franchise shape?

If you want a story you can finish

Favor a series with a clear campaign and a sensible starting point. Prioritize pacing, recap support and whether optional content can be ignored without damaging the ending.

If you want a weekly hobby

Look for a repeatable loop, reliable access and a community in your preferred mode. Check update cadence and the amount of content you are expected to buy or learn.

If you want cooperative memories

Prioritize group size, drop-in behavior, session length and shared progression. Test the game with the people you will actually play with rather than judging only solo footage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want mastery and competition

Check the practice tools, matchmaking structure, input demands and community population in your region. Decide whether a changing balance or seasonal system is part of the appeal or a burden.

If you want relaxed exploration or building

Prioritize freedom, pacing controls, save flexibility and the ability to play without a fixed schedule. A series can be long without being stressful if it respects your preferred pace.

When to change your mind

Choosing a franchise is not a promise to finish every entry. Reconsider when the core activity no longer appeals, the platform or regional access changes, your available time changes, or the community and monetization model become incompatible with your preferences.

You can keep the parts that worked—an activity, a setting, a cooperative routine—and use them to start a new shortlist. The same criteria remain useful because they describe your needs, not a permanent ranking of franchises.
