For Nintendo Switch 2, the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is the direct-fit option. Its main reasons to choose it over reusing an original Switch Pro Controller are the GameChat C button, remappable rear GL/GR buttons and built-in 3.5 mm headset jack. Nintendo says the new controller works only with Switch 2, while the original Switch Pro Controller can pair with Switch 2.
Start with compatibility: buying new or reusing an original controller
Nintendo describes the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller as compatible with Switch 2 only. It is not the model to buy for use with the original Nintendo Switch.
If you already own an original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo says it can pair with Switch 2. That makes it a practical reuse choice if its controls meet your needs. The original controller does not have the newer model’s C button, remappable GL/GR rear buttons or built-in headset jack, so consider whether any of those additions matter before purchasing another controller. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance covers the existing controller.
What the Switch 2 Pro Controller adds
C button for GameChat
The Switch 2 controller’s C button opens the GameChat menu. GameChat requires internet access, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership, according to Nintendo’s US accessory page; availability of the service varies by country. The button is a convenient entry point, not a substitute for those requirements. Nintendo’s product page

- C Button for GameChat**
Two remappable rear buttons
The controller has GL and GR buttons on its rear. Nintendo says you can map them to buttons of your choice. They are useful if you want additional inputs within reach, but the official feature description does not establish that they improve performance in any particular game.
Built-in headset connection
Nintendo’s regional specification identifies a 4-pole stereo 3.5 mm jack using the CTIA standard. Nintendo cautions that it cannot guarantee operation with every product, so check compatibility if you plan to use a specific headset or microphone.

Choose your connection and charging setup
The controller can be used wirelessly or wired. For wired tabletop play, Nintendo says a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, sold separately, can connect the controller to the console. For TV mode with the console docked, Nintendo’s instructions name a USB-C-to-USB-A cable, model BEE-011. The product listing says a USB-C charging cable is included, but do not assume it is the separately sold cable specified for wired tabletop play. Nintendo’s connection instructions

Battery life and charging time
Nintendo Singapore estimates approximately 40 hours of battery life and lists approximately 3.5 hours for charging. Those are manufacturer figures, not guaranteed results; actual battery time can vary. Nintendo Support for the Americas gives a different charging estimate of approximately three hours. Treat these as figures from separate Nintendo sources and regions, rather than a single universal promise. Nintendo Singapore’s specifications and Nintendo Support’s charging FAQ

- Choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller if you are buying a new controller for Switch 2 and want the C button, remappable GL/GR buttons or the headset jack.
- Reuse your original Switch Pro Controller if you already own one, it pairs with Switch 2, and you do not need the newer model’s added controls or audio connection.
- Do not buy the Switch 2 Pro Controller for an original Switch. Nintendo identifies it as a Switch 2-only controller.
