How to Choose a Pro Controller for PS5: Features That Matter for Your Games

Choose a PS5 pro controller by the controls you want to remap, trigger travel your games need, stick layout, modularity, and supported platform features.

Choose a PS5 pro controller by the actions you want to move off the face buttons, the trigger travel your games need, and whether you value modular parts or Sony’s PS5-specific features. A PS5 controller with back buttons is not automatically a better fit just because it has more buttons: placement, remapping, saved profiles, stick layout, setup, and platform limits all matter.

Start with the controls you want to change

Before comparing models, identify what feels awkward with your current controller. In a shooter, you might want to jump, crouch, or reload without taking your thumb off a stick. In a fighting game, a six-button face layout may be more useful than extra rear controls. In a racing game, preserving smooth analog trigger input can matter more than getting the shortest possible trigger pull.

Then check how each controller handles the change: how many controls can be remapped, where they sit, whether you can save separate layouts, and how easily you can switch between them. The number of rear buttons is only one part of the comparison.

Compare the features that affect how you play

Rear controls and profiles

Rear buttons or paddles let you assign commands that would otherwise require reaching for face buttons. The useful number is the number you can comfortably reach and use—not simply the number in the product listing. Saved profiles help if you use different layouts for different games. Sony documents remapping and saved profiles for the DualSense Edge; Razer lists six remappable buttons on the Wolverine V2 Pro; and the Victrix Pro BFG guide describes four mappable rear buttons and three profiles.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Trigger travel and trigger effects

Trigger stops shorten how far a trigger must move before registering an input. That can suit discrete actions where a quick press is more useful than a variable pull. It is not ideal for every game: racing games often use analog trigger depth for gradual acceleration or braking, so full travel may be preferable.

On the DualSense Edge, Sony documents long, medium, and short trigger strokes, but its trigger effects do not work when the stops are set to medium or short. The Wolverine V2 Pro offers full-range or quick-click trigger operation, while the Victrix Pro BFG guide lists five trigger-stop positions. Check the target game and the controller’s supported features before trading analog range for a shorter pull.

Stick layout, tuning, and replacement

Stick layout is a personal preference, and modularity matters if you want to change it. The Victrix Pro BFG guide describes a reversible left module that switches between standard and offset stick layouts, plus a replaceable six-button fightpad module for players who prefer that arrangement.

Sony documents stick sensitivity and dead-zone adjustments for the Edge, along with swappable stick caps and replaceable stick modules. Sony says, “You can also replace the stick module if it doesn’t work properly or stops working.” That is a defined replacement option, not evidence that stick drift is eliminated, that it is less likely than on another controller, or that a replacement will always be inexpensive or available. See Sony’s DualSense Edge support instructions for the documented parts and adjustment options.

PS5 features, other platforms, and setup

If you want PS5-oriented customization in the standard PlayStation controller ecosystem, Sony’s Edge documentation covers remapping, saved profiles that can be switched in-game, vibration tuning, and profile editing on PC. The Wolverine V2 Pro is advertised by Razer as PlayStation licensed for PS5 and PC. The Victrix Pro BFG guide covers PS5, PS4, and PC modes, but compatibility does not mean every feature works in every mode.

For the Victrix Pro BFG, wireless setup requires the included USB dongle and a Day 1 update through the PC app. Its guide says headset-jack audio and PlayStation touchpad operation are unavailable in PC XInput mode. It also recommends recalibration after changing the left-module layout or when stick or trigger problems occur. Read the Victrix Pro BFG user guide if you plan to use it across platforms.

How the documented options differ

Controller Documented controls and customization Platform and setup details Best fit by feature
Sony DualSense Edge Remapping, saved profiles, stick sensitivity and dead-zone tuning, vibration tuning, two back-button types, swappable stick caps, replaceable stick modules, and long/medium/short trigger strokes. Sony says trigger effects stop working at medium or short strokes. Sony documents PS5 profile controls and PC profile editing. Players who want Sony’s documented PS5-oriented customization and a specific stick-module replacement path.
Victrix Pro BFG Four mappable rear buttons, three saved profiles, five trigger-stop positions, a reversible left module for standard or offset sticks, and a swappable six-button fightpad module. Guide covers PS5, PS4, and PC. Wireless setup requires the included dongle and a PC-app Day 1 update. Headset audio and PlayStation touchpad operation are unavailable in PC XInput mode. Players who value alternate stick layouts or a modular fightpad arrangement.
Razer Wolverine V2 Pro Six remappable buttons, interchangeable thumbsticks, and HyperTrigger switches between full-range and short, click-like pulls. Razer’s 2023 announcement specifies a 0.65 mm action-button actuation distance; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independent comparative result. Razer advertises it as PlayStation licensed for PS5 and PC; confirm current compatibility for your intended use. Players prioritizing a larger number of remappable controls and a quick trigger mode.

These documented feature sets do not establish which controller is most comfortable, has the lowest latency, or lasts longest. Those comparisons require dated, transparent testing rather than a feature list.

Match a controller to your games

  • Shooters: Consider reachable rear controls for frequent commands and shorter trigger travel for discrete actions. Prioritize the placement and remapping method you can use comfortably.
  • Racing games: Keep full analog trigger travel available when you need variable acceleration or braking. Make sure any stop setting can be changed for other games.
  • Fighting games: Look at the D-pad and face-button arrangement as well as rear controls. The Pro BFG’s documented six-button fightpad module is an option if that layout suits your play.
  • Strong stick-layout preference: Check whether the sticks are fixed or whether the controller actually lets you switch layouts. The Pro BFG guide documents a reversible left module; do not assume other modular parts offer the same change.
  • One controller across platforms: Verify the exact mode, supported features, required app or update, and whether the included dongle is needed. Platform compatibility alone does not guarantee that audio, touchpad, or every other feature works in every mode.

Check before you buy

  1. List the actions you want to move. Identify the commands you want on rear controls or a different button layout, and whether you need more than one saved profile.
  2. Check trigger behavior for your games. Confirm whether you need full analog travel, quick-click operation, or adjustable stops—and whether using stops disables another feature you care about.
  3. Confirm fit and platform details for the exact model. Check current PS5 compatibility, game support, operating modes, required software or firmware updates, and included cable or wireless dongle.
  4. Check maintenance and purchase terms. Verify that any replacement module fits the model you are buying, and review the seller’s current availability and return policy.

Feature documentation does not establish current prices or stock, battery runtime, comparative latency, comfort, durability, drift rates, or long-term reliability for these controllers. Treat performance specifications as manufacturer claims unless transparent independent testing supports a comparison.
