Choose a PS5 game by starting with what you want to do—follow a story, compete, race, play with family, or something else—then check whether it supports your preferred way to play. Compare solo, couch, and online options, challenge, accessibility, setup, and edition details before buying. There is no universally best game for every player.
Start with the activity you want
Think about the part of playing that sounds appealing today. PlayStation’s game discovery guide groups games by genres and formats, including story-led adventures, action, racing, sports, family play, rhythm, platforming, team shooters, and battle royale. Use those categories to narrow the field, not as a promise that every game in a genre will feel alike.

- Story and characters: Look for single-player or story-led adventures if following a narrative is the main draw.
- Action and challenge: Check the game’s combat style and difficulty options; action games can differ substantially in pace and demands.
- Racing or sports: Decide whether you want a simulation, arcade-style action, or competition with other players, then confirm the modes offered by the specific title.
- Relaxed, family, rhythm, or platform play: Check the intended audience, supported players, and controls rather than assuming a game is suitable from its category alone.
- Competitive play: Team shooters and battle royale games focus on online competition, but confirm the title’s specific modes and online requirements.
Do you want to play alone or with others?
Choose the social format early: solo, local couch play, or online multiplayer. They are different ways to play, and a game that offers one does not necessarily offer the others.
Solo play
If you want to play on your own, verify that the game has a single-player mode and check whether its features depend on an internet connection or online service. The current official listing is the best place to confirm title-specific requirements.

Local multiplayer
For playing together in the same room, check the supported player count and whether the mode is cooperative or competitive. PlayStation’s local multiplayer guide covers couch-play options. An additional DualSense controller may be needed if you do not already have enough controllers for the people playing.
Online multiplayer
Confirm the exact online modes and requirements for the game you are considering. Online multiplayer generally requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription in most cases, but requirements can vary by title; check the game’s official listing before purchase. PlayStation’s PS5 games page is one place to verify current details.

Match the challenge and pace to your preferences
Consider how demanding and intense you want a game to feel, and whether you prefer short sessions or longer stretches of play. Some games offer selectable difficulty, but there is no universal difficulty or session-length label that reliably compares one PS5 game with another. Check the individual game’s description and settings, including whether it lets you pause or save when convenient.
PS5 game presets can set supported options such as difficulty, performance or resolution mode, camera view, subtitles and audio, and online-session preferences. These presets only apply where a game supports the setting. PlayStation explains the feature in its PS5 game presets guide.

Check accessibility and control options
If a particular visual, audio, control, difficulty, or online-communication option matters to you, check the individual game rather than inferring support from its genre or franchise. A game hub on PS5 can show Accessibility Tags, and PlayStation’s support guide explains where to find accessibility information.
In an April 3, 2023 announcement, PlayStation said developers could choose from more than 50 Accessibility Tags across six categories. That figure describes the tag system—not the number of features in any one game. The announcement explains that tags help developers provide detailed information about accessibility features supported in their games: PlayStation.Blog.

Compare your shortlist before buying
Once you have a few candidates, compare the details that could change whether you enjoy playing them:
