For many high tunnels, greenhouses, and small farms, a portable surface steamer is appropriate for roughly the top 2–6 inches. Deeper treatment requires injection, subsurface, or another specialized method. The boiler is only one part of the purchase: hose, steam delivery hardware, a heat-resistant tarp, probes, water, fuel, labor, safety controls, storage, and maintenance determine whether the system works economically and safely.
Define the treatment before comparing equipment
A model name or advertised steam-output number cannot tell you whether a machine suits your farm. Write down the job it must perform first:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Area of each bed, bench, or field section treated in one run.
- Required treatment depth.
- Organisms you are trying to control, such as weed seed, a soilborne pathogen, or a nematode.
- Crops that will follow treatment and whether they depend on beneficial soil organisms.
- How often treatment will be needed and how many operating hours are available between crops.
- Available water, fuel, electrical service, transport, storage, and labor.
These details let a supplier size the complete system rather than sell you a boiler that cannot heat your soil uniformly.
Use surface steaming only for the depth it can heat
Mississippi State University Extension describes portable surface steaming as a small-scale method for approximately the upper 2–6 inches of soil. Its examples include high tunnels, greenhouses, and smaller farms such as those under 5 acres. That acreage is an illustrative scale description, not a fixed capacity limit: the area you can treat at once depends on the generator, soil, weather, and setup.

If the problem is below the surface layer, a tarp over the soil may not deliver a reliable dose at depth. The same extension guidance describes injection steaming as a specialized approach that can reach about 8–12 inches, while subsurface pipes are common in greenhouse installations. Do not buy a surface unit expecting it to disinfect a deeper root zone.
Identify the target organism and its required dose
Steam is broad-spectrum. It can suppress weeds and many soilborne pests and pathogens, but the temperature-and-time combination that works for one organism is not automatically validated for another. Ask your local extension specialist, crop adviser, or qualified plant pathologist to identify the target and confirm a treatment protocol for your soil and crop rotation.
Choose the steaming method
The delivery method determines depth, coverage, labor, and the type of equipment you must purchase. Compare methods against the job rather than assuming that a larger boiler makes every method equivalent.

| Method | Typical use | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface steaming under a tarp | Upper 2–6 inches in beds, benches, tunnels, and small fields | Portable and comparatively simple; suitable for small areas | Limited depth; tarp sealing and probe placement strongly affect uniformity |
| Injection steaming | Deeper soil, including applications around 8–12 inches | Places steam into the soil rather than relying only on surface penetration | Specialized lances or perforated pipes; more complex setup and control |
| Subsurface pipe systems | Permanent or semi-permanent greenhouse beds | Can distribute steam from below the root zone with repeatable bed layouts | Requires installation and is less portable |
| Mobile outdoor systems | Larger open-field areas | Moves across multiple sections without rebuilding a fixed installation | Higher capital, transport, and operating demands than a small portable setup |
| Other sheet, vacuum, plate, plough, or sandwich systems | Specialized commercial or field situations | May improve throughput or fuel use for a particular layout | Different machinery, labor, and site requirements; compare with current supplier data |
AHDB’s comparison of sheet steaming, steam ploughs, vacuum steaming, plate steamers, and sandwich steaming is useful for understanding the alternatives, but its page states that the content was correct as of June 2021. Its UK operating figures should not be treated as current prices, capacities, or performance guarantees for your farm.
Size the generator for real throughput
Steam output is an input to a capacity calculation, not the capacity itself. Heating time changes with starting soil temperature, soil texture, moisture, wind, air temperature, treatment depth, covered area, hose length, boiler output, and the distance between boiler and bed.
Interpret published output carefully
Mississippi State’s Soil Steaming 101 uses a Sioux Steam-Flo SF-30 as an example and reports 308.4 kilograms of steam per hour. The manufacturer’s commercial range is stated as 370–3,450 pounds of steam per hour, and the manufacturer says smaller generators can heat a single 20-by-100-foot section to 180°F. Those are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent tests or a promise that your soil will reach that temperature in the same time.

When comparing a quote, request the rated steam output, fuel consumption, operating pressure, water requirement, recommended hose diameter and maximum hose length, warm-up time, and the area assumed in the supplier’s estimate. Ask the supplier to calculate performance using your bed dimensions, soil type, starting moisture, target depth, fuel, water source, and expected schedule.
Calculate usable work, not just boiler size
Divide the total area by the area that can be covered and heated in one run, then include setup, warm-up, treatment hold, cooling, tarp movement, and refilling. A generator that appears adequate on paper may become a bottleneck if workers must move a heavy tarp repeatedly or if the boiler is far from the beds.
Keep the boiler as close as practical while preserving a safe work area. Long hose runs add heat loss, pressure drop, condensate, and trip hazards. If the farm treats several beds in sequence, ask whether the generator can maintain the required flow continuously or whether it must recover between runs.
Specify the complete surface-steaming setup
A surface system normally includes more than the generator. Mississippi State’s setup describes these components:
- A steam generator or boiler with an adjustable outlet.
- Reinforced, heat-resistant steam hose.
- A woven nylon steam sock or perforated delivery pipes to spread steam under the soil.
- A heat-resistant tarp sized to cover the treatment area.
- Chains, boards, soil, or other heavy materials to seal the tarp edges.
- Soil-temperature probes that can be placed at the intended treatment depth in several representative locations.
- A dependable water supply and the correct fuel for the boiler.
- Pressure-relief and low-water safety devices, where supplied by the equipment.
Check that hose fittings, valves, socks, pipes, and tarp materials are compatible with the boiler’s pressure and temperature. A leak at a coupling can reduce heating, expose workers to steam, and damage nearby materials. A tarp that is too small or not heat-rated allows steam to escape instead of condensing in the soil.
Plan probe locations before buying
Temperature probes belong in the soil, not only on the boiler display. Place them at the intended treatment depth—typically 2–6 inches for surface steaming—and in representative locations such as the center, edge, near a corner, and any area known to heat slowly. SARE’s urban-farm guide also recommends probes in different parts of a bed. Use enough probes to detect the coldest location; the hottest point alone does not prove uniform treatment.

Set a measured temperature and hold time
Mississippi State identifies 160–180°F as a typical soil-temperature range for controlling many soil pests and weeds. The correct target depends on the organism, soil, and crop. Do not use the boiler’s pressure or outlet temperature as a substitute for a soil measurement.
| Protocol or guidance | What it says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Mississippi State University Extension | Typical soil target of 160–180°F; some research recommends a 30-minute hold, while other cited work found no difference in weed or tomato southern blight control at 160°F for five minutes at four inches | Use as a range and evidence summary, then verify the protocol for the specific target organism |
| SARE urban-farm user guide | 160°F for 30 minutes | An operational recommendation from that guide; confirm suitability for your crop and pest |
| Manufacturer guidance | 170–180°F for at least 30 minutes | Attribute this to the manufacturer and check that the recommendation matches your treatment objective |
These sources do not establish one universal recipe for every farm. Hold time begins when the coldest monitored soil location reaches the target, not when steam first enters the hose. Record probe readings and time for every run. If one location lags, improve the seal, redistribute the delivery pipe or sock, adjust moisture, or reduce the covered area.
Avoid excessive heat. Mississippi State warns that exceeding 180°F can harm soil structure by making it less porous and can alter soil chemistry. Higher boiler settings do not compensate for poor coverage and can create agronomic and safety problems.

Prepare soil and site conditions for even heating
Control moisture without saturating the bed
Overly wet soil takes longer to heat. The University of California, Davis, explains that condensing steam requires additional energy and that water-filled pore spaces can impede steam circulation. Prepare a moist but not waterlogged seedbed, and correct drainage or compaction problems before steaming. Starting soil temperature also affects warm-up time; a cold winter bed will require more energy than a warm tunnel bed.
Make the surface uniform
Remove rocks, crop residue, sharp stakes, and objects that could puncture the tarp or block delivery pipes. Grade the bed so the tarp contacts the edges consistently. Seal every edge with chains, boards, or soil heavy enough to prevent steam leakage, while keeping those materials clear of hot fittings and worker pathways.
Account for weather and layout
Wind strips heat from exposed hoses and lifts tarp edges. Cold ambient conditions, long hose runs, and large treatment sections all increase the time to target. Schedule treatment when wind is manageable, protect the boiler from rain, and leave room for workers to move without stepping on hot hoses or the tarp.

Budget the whole ownership cost
The reviewed guidance does not establish a broadly applicable current purchase price. Prices vary with boiler size, fuel system, delivery hardware, controls, transport, and local availability, so request a site-specific quote instead of relying on an old list price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInclude these costs in the comparison:
- Generator or boiler, controls, and required fuel system.
- Steam hose, valves, fittings, steam sock or perforated pipes, and replacement seals.
- Heat-resistant tarp and edge weights.
- Calibrated soil probes and any data logger used to record holds.
- Water, fuel, electricity, and fuel storage.
- Labor for bed preparation, setup, monitoring, tarp movement, and cleanup.
- Transport equipment, shelter, corrosion protection, and winterization.
- Repairs, replacement hoses, probe calibration, and safety inspections.
Mississippi State gives an organized surface-steaming example requiring about three hours of site preparation plus roughly one hour operating the steamer, assuming enough workers. Treat that as an example rather than a promise: larger beds, wet soil, poor weather, long hose runs, and repeated tarp moves can take substantially longer.
Build safety into the purchase and procedure
Pressurized steam and hot metal can cause severe burns. Choose equipment with a clear manual, pressure-relief protection, low-water sensing where applicable, accessible shutoffs, and documented inspection requirements.
- Read the boiler and accessory manuals before connecting water, fuel, hose, or delivery pipes.
- Operate on level, stable ground with adequate ventilation and no dry grass, fuel, or other flammable material nearby.
- Keep bystanders and children at least 15 feet away, following the practical separation recommended in the SARE shared-use guide.
- Wear heat-resistant gloves, long pants, closed-toe shoes, and a face shield; add other PPE specified by the equipment manual.
- Inspect hoses, couplings, tarp, valves, relief devices, and low-water sensors before every run.
- Start with workers clear of outlets and fittings, and never loosen a pressurized connection.
- Monitor the soil probes and boiler controls continuously; do not leave an operating steamer unattended.
- Shut down according to the manual, isolate fuel and pressure, and allow components to cool before moving the tarp or disconnecting hardware.
Steam can remain trapped beneath a tarp after the boiler is shut off. Vent and uncover the area only when it is safe to do so, and warn workers about hot condensate and wet, slippery surfaces.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for soil biology and reinfestation
Steaming reduces beneficial microorganisms as well as harmful ones. That matters for legumes that rely on rhizobia and for crops that benefit from mycorrhizae. Mississippi State suggests reintroducing beneficial organisms with inoculated seed or plants, or by applying suitable microbial products to the soil. Confirm compatibility with your crop adviser; do not assume that every inoculant survives the same treatment or application timing.

Use these decision examples
High tunnel with shallow disease and weed problems
If the treatment objective is confined to the upper 2–6 inches of a few beds, a portable surface system is the logical starting point. Specify enough probes to find the slowest-heating location, a tarp that seals each bed, and a generator sized for the number of runs you can complete between crops. Do not treat the “under 5 acres” description as evidence that one boiler can process five acres quickly.
Greenhouse beds with a deeper root-zone problem
If the target is 8–12 inches deep, compare injection or subsurface systems instead of enlarging a surface tarp. The additional hardware and installation may cost more, but it addresses the depth requirement directly and can provide more consistent distribution in permanent beds.

For frequent, large-area work, calculate labor and movement time as carefully as steam output. A mobile or higher-throughput system may be justified, but only after a supplier models fuel, water, transport, and treatment time for your fields. A small portable boiler can be less expensive to purchase yet more expensive per treated acre when workers spend most of the day repositioning it.
Troubleshoot before replacing the boiler
| Symptom | Likely causes | Corrective actions |
|---|---|---|
| Soil never reaches the target | Wet or cold soil, undersized generator, excessive covered area, long hose run, or major tarp leaks | Reduce the area, improve edge sealing, shorten the hose, correct moisture, and obtain a site-specific capacity check |
| One probe is much colder than the others | Uneven delivery-pipe placement, a low edge, compacted soil, or a cold spot near the tarp perimeter | Reposition the delivery hardware, reseal the edge, loosen compacted soil before treatment, and keep monitoring the coldest point |
| Large amounts of condensate collect | Excess moisture, cold soil, poor drainage, or steam condensing in a long hose | Allow suitable drying, improve drainage, insulate or shorten the hose where approved, and ask the supplier about condensate management |
| Pressure or low-water protection trips | Insufficient water, blocked hose or pipe, closed valve, or a control fault | Shut down safely, depressurize, inspect the flow path and water supply, and have failed controls serviced before restarting |
| Problem returns after treatment | Untreated soil moved upward, contaminated tools or transplants, or reinvasion by mobile pests | Improve sanitation, avoid deep disturbance, inspect planting material, and combine steaming with an integrated management plan |
Maintain and store the system
Keep the generator sheltered and dry to reduce rust and corrosion. Inspect the boiler, valves, relief devices, hoses, tarp, steam sock, pipes, and probes at the intervals in the manual. Replace cracked or heat-damaged components rather than patching them beyond their rated service.
Where freezing occurs, drain and winterize plumbing according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Store probes clean and protected, and verify their readings periodically against a known reference. Keep treatment records—including date, bed, soil condition, probe locations, target temperature, hold time, and observations—so you can identify whether a future failure came from equipment, weather, soil preparation, or reinfestation.
Final buying test
A suitable small-farm soil steamer should pass all of these tests before you sign a purchase order:
- It reaches the required depth with the method proposed, rather than merely producing hot steam at the boiler.
- The supplier has sized output for your actual area, soil, moisture, hose distance, fuel, and schedule.
- The system includes a practical way to measure and document soil temperature at multiple locations.
- Every component—delivery hardware, tarp, probes, fittings, water, fuel, and safety controls—is included or clearly priced.
- The operating protocol identifies the target organism and does not exceed the temperature needed for the job.
- You have enough trained labor, ventilation, clearance, PPE, storage, and winterization capacity to operate it safely.
- The plan addresses beneficial microbes and prevents untreated soil, tools, or planting material from reintroducing the problem.
If a quote cannot answer those questions, it is not yet a farm-ready specification. Choose the method and monitoring system first, then select the boiler that can support them reliably.
