For the 2026–27 U.S. season, local games, out-of-market games and nationally televised games follow different routes, and blackouts can limit what a subscription shows in your location.
Start with your team and location
Before subscribing, identify your team’s local broadcast provider and whether your home is inside that team’s regional territory. Then check the listing for each game you care about. A single service may cover some games but not others because local, out-of-market and national rights are split.
- Find your team’s local broadcast information in the NHL’s official team-by-team guide.
- Check whether your location is inside the team’s regional territory, especially if you’re considering Prime Video.
- Look up the specific game on the dated NHL schedule to see whether it is local or nationally televised.
- Compare the game’s route with subscriptions or TV-provider access you already have, then confirm blackout rules and device compatibility before paying.
The NHL’s guide and the service listings checked on October 4, 2026 are the relevant references for this season. Rights, territorial boundaries and blackout rules can change, so verify the particular game and location before purchase.
Which service carries which NHL games?

Understand ESPN Select, ESPN Unlimited and NHL Power Play
ESPN Select
ESPN describes Select as access to ESPN+ content only. That is the relevant distinction if you want the ESPN+ out-of-market catalog: Select is not the same as access to ESPN’s linear networks.

ESPN Unlimited
ESPN says Unlimited includes ESPN networks and services as well as ESPN+. It is the streaming option ESPN identifies for ESPN/ABC live games without an eligible pay-TV login, as well as the ESPN+ content included in the plan.
NHL Power Play
ESPN describes NHL Power Play as offering more than 1,050 out-of-market games for 2026–27. That figure does not mean every game is available to every viewer: local blackouts, restrictions and certain NHL Network regional games affect coverage. NHL Center Ice is the NHL’s listed U.S. out-of-market route streamed through ESPN+.

Why one subscription may not cover every game
Local rights are tied to regional territories; out-of-market packages serve a different audience; national games are assigned to particular broadcasters and services. A game’s route can therefore depend on both its listing and your location. For example, an out-of-market package is not a substitute for checking a nationally televised game, and access to a national channel does not by itself establish access to every local broadcast.
For the 2026–27 season, ESPN’s schedule announcement reports 100 exclusive NHL games: 53 on ESPN and ABC, and 47 on ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu. Those are season totals, not a promise that any one ESPN subscription includes every listed game. Use the schedule to identify the service for the matchup you want.

Check blackouts, devices and cost before subscribing
Blackouts depend on location
ESPN labels NHL Power Play with local-market blackouts and restrictions. Disney+ also warns that some sports events may be subject to regional blackouts and points viewers to league-specific rules. Check the NHL team/local guide and the service’s blackout information for your address before paying.
Confirm the app works on your screen
The NHL/Prime Video announcement says in-market streams for the six covered teams are available through web, smartphone, tablet, set-top-box, game-console and connected-TV apps. Check the app on a device you already use; the announced compatibility does not establish that you need to buy a particular streaming device.

Compare the actual price and entitlement
Prices and bundles are not established here as a verified, like-for-like comparison. Check providers for current monthly or annual pricing, promotions, and whether an existing pay-TV login or subscription already grants access. Compare the total cost of the routes needed for your games, rather than the price of one package in isolation.

A practical way to avoid paying for the wrong package
- Mostly your local team? Start with the team’s local listing. If it is one of the six Prime Video teams, verify your territory.
- Mostly teams outside your market? Check NHL Center Ice through ESPN+ / NHL Power Play, then confirm blackout and NHL Network restrictions for the games you follow.
- Following nationally televised matchups? Use the schedule to identify ESPN/ABC, ESPN+, Disney+, Hulu or TNT/HBO Max/Watch TNT distribution, then make sure your plan or provider login matches it.
- Want broad coverage? Make a list of the games or teams you care about and mark each as local, out-of-market or national. Add up the access routes that list actually requires before subscribing.
