Choose a survival horror game by deciding what you want to do when danger appears: fight it, hide from it, or alternate between the two. Then check the game’s viewpoint, combat and puzzle difficulty options, platform, and accessibility settings in the exact edition you plan to play. There is no single best starting point; the right choice depends on which kinds of tension you enjoy.
Which survival horror game should I play?
Start with the game’s moment-to-moment threat relationship, rather than its franchise reputation or a broad “hard” or “scary” label. Do you want to plan encounters and spend resources in combat, avoid enemies and improvise, or explore an unsettling setting where fights happen but do not turn you into an action hero?

Do I want a horror game with combat or one where I hide?
Choose combat if planning a fight is part of the appeal
Consider how much you want to aim, manage supplies, and make decisions under pressure. Combat can be present without making the protagonist feel powerful. PlayStation’s description of the Silent Hill 2 remake frames it as psychological horror with modernized combat and an over-the-shoulder view. In a May 30, 2024 announcement, creative director Motoi Okamoto said: “The combat in this remake is designed to allow for a wider variety of approaches – the player’s arsenal of actions has been expanded, while also preserving the feeling of playing as an inexperienced everyman.” That is a design description of this remake, not a rule for the genre. #1 Best Overall
- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
Choose evasion if being hunted is the point
If you would rather listen, hide, and adapt than meet every threat in a direct fight, look for games that emphasize stealth and reactive pursuit. Steam describes Amnesia: The Bunker as first-person horror with an ever-present threat that reacts to movement and sound; its listing also identifies survival horror, stealth, resource management, and exploration. Those details make it a useful example for players who want tension built around avoiding danger.
Look for a deliberate mix if you want both
Some players want occasional fights but not constant action. Look for descriptions that pair exploration or psychological horror with combat, then check gameplay details for how encounters are framed. Labels alone cannot tell you how often you will fight or how vulnerable the character feels.

Are survival horror games too hard?
Difficulty is not one slider in every game. Combat difficulty, puzzle difficulty, assists, and special challenge modes can work differently, so check each separately rather than assuming an “easy” option changes every obstacle.
- Silent Hill 2 (PS5): PlayStation lists adjustable difficulty and assists. Konami says combat difficulty can be changed later in Settings, while puzzle difficulty affects game content and cannot be changed during a playthrough. Konami support: SILENT HILL 2.
- Dead Space (PC): EA’s gameplay-settings page documents selectable difficulty and an Impossible challenge mode. Check the page for the PC settings rather than assuming the same options apply to every version. EA: Dead Space gameplay settings for PC.
If changing puzzle difficulty mid-game matters to you, verify that specific behavior before starting. The fact that one game lets you adjust combat later does not mean it also lets you alter puzzles or every other challenge.

- Survive With Light: With limited resources, take on powerful supernatural enemies in desperate close-combat situations. It takes more than just a gun to survive: light is the ultimate weapon in the fight against the darkness and will be your refuge when enemies threaten to overwhelm you.

Does first-person or over-the-shoulder view suit me?
Viewpoint is a personal comfort and presentation choice, not a reliable shortcut for predicting which game is scarier or easier. Steam identifies Amnesia: The Bunker as first-person; PlayStation describes the Silent Hill 2 remake as over-the-shoulder. If camera position affects your comfort or enjoyment, confirm the viewpoint on the exact game listing before choosing.
What platform and accessibility options should I check?
Verify the product page for the platform you will play on: feature lists can differ between versions. The PlayStation product page for the PS5 Silent Hill 2 lists remapping, stick sensitivity and inversion options, simplified quick-time events, control and tutorial reminders, and game pausing. Treat those as options listed for that PS5 page, not as a feature guarantee for other ports.

- Cosmic horror that makes you question what's real and what's not; the line between reality and alternate worlds begins to blur.
- True survival horror: scavenge for weapons and supplies in limited quantities and run/hide to survive by any means necessary.
- Examine crime scenes and piece together clues and evidence in order to solve a series of gruesome murders.
- Explore a realistic and gritty apartment building and discover hidden areas and pathways in your search for the truth. Diverse AI: fight or hide against entities that are unpredictable and use your environment to create distractions.
- Gruesome horror around every corner and an unending feeling of tension and helplessness as you explore deeper into the complex.
- Confirm the platform and edition match the settings information you are reading.
- Check for the control changes or assistance features you actually need, such as remapping, stick adjustments, or simplified timed inputs.
- Look for information about pausing and reminders if those affect how you prefer to play.
Where should I start in a long-running series?
You do not need to know a whole franchise’s history to choose a game. Capcom’s official “Resident Evil: Where to Play” guide, published October 18, 2024, is specifically intended to help players choose a first or next Resident Evil game. Use a publisher’s entry guide to narrow the options, then match a suggested game to your preferences for combat, evasion, viewpoint, and difficulty. A series guide can orient you; it cannot decide which style of tension you will enjoy.
