Decide how much tactical planning and build management you enjoy, whether story or combat matters more, how costly failure should feel, and whether you’ll play solo or with others. Then check the specific PC version’s requirements and co-op support before buying.
Start with the pace of combat you enjoy
Turn-based combat gives you time to consider moves and precise control over party members. That can make tactical decisions rewarding, but the pauses between actions—and repeated encounters—can also feel slow. In a 2020 qualitative study, Ville Mäkelä and Albrecht Schmidt recorded both unrushed play and perceived tactical depth as player-valued strengths, alongside reports that battles could be slow or tedious. Those are reported preferences, not guarantees about every game. Read the study.
- Look for deliberate tactics if you like weighing positioning, abilities, and party actions before committing.
- Look for varied encounters if you worry that a slower pace will make routine fights feel repetitive.
- Consider squad-focused missions if you want tactical decisions with persistent consequences. GameSpot describes XCOM 2 as a turn-based mission game where squad members can be permanently killed. See the example in GameSpot’s turn-based RPG guide.
Choose the main attraction: story, combat, or both
Some games put dialogue and consequential decisions at the center; others emphasize combat systems and experimentation. Neither approach is inherently better—pick the one you want to spend most of your time with.
For story, party play, and consequential choices
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a PC example to investigate if you want quests, dialogue, a party, and choices described as consequential alongside varied turn-based combat. GameSpot’s PC RPG guide covers those elements. Use it as an example, not as proof that every narrative-focused RPG handles choices the same way.

For combat interactions and flexible character building
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is worth considering if you enjoy combining abilities and experimenting with builds. Bandai Namco describes its system as classless and highlights elemental combinations; its official page lists over 200 skills across 12 skill schools. That breadth offers room to experiment, but may feel like extra management if you prefer a simpler character setup. See the publisher’s feature details.
Check build complexity and how you handle failure
Before choosing a game with many abilities or character options, decide whether planning a build is part of the fun for you. Divinity: Original Sin 2 lets players choose from six Origin Characters or create a custom character, and its classless system supports broad skill choices. If you prefer to focus on the story or encounters without much build planning, check how much character setup the game expects before committing.

Difficulty settings matter for a different reason: they shape the cost of mistakes. Bandai Namco lists five modes for Divinity: Original Sin 2, from Story Mode for a narrative focus to Honour Mode, where death is final. Check each game’s own descriptions rather than assuming difficulty labels work the same way across RPGs. Decide whether you want low-pressure exploration, a demanding tactical challenge, or consequences that make each decision feel costly.
Decide whether you’ll play alone or in co-op
Multiplayer is game-specific, so verify the exact mode your group needs. Bandai Namco describes Divinity: Original Sin 2 as supporting a party of four, with single-player, two-player split-screen, and four-player online play. If you plan to play with friends, check the PC version’s co-op mode and compatibility for everyone in your group before purchasing. The publisher’s page lists these modes.

Verify the PC version before you buy
Confirm the supported operating system, current system requirements, storefront, and edition for the particular game you’re considering. Larian’s support page lists PC and Mac for Divinity: Original Sin 2 and names Steam and GOG as PC routes. That does not establish current prices, system requirements, or the details of every storefront edition, so check those on the relevant store or publisher page.
