Choose a used console by its exact model and condition, then verify the actual unit before you pay. Ask for current photos and a short test video, inspect and try it in person where possible, check that it can access its platform service, and understand the written return and payment terms. These checks can reveal problems, but they cannot guarantee long-term reliability.
Compare the exact console and what comes with it
Console families can include disc and digital versions, different storage options, and different included accessories. Compare listings by the specific model or revision, not just the family name. Check that the stated version matches the photos and that the price reflects the actual condition and included items.

Compare the controller, power supply, cables, dock or stand, and any other accessories you need. Include shipping and the cost of replacing missing parts when judging the total price. Do not count digital games or other content on the seller’s account as part of the purchase unless transferability is clearly established.
Read the item description rather than relying on a broad condition label. For example, eBay defines “used” as previously used with possible cosmetic wear, while “for parts or not working” can mean the item is not fully operational or needs repair. eBay’s condition definitions apply to its marketplace; other platforms may use different terms, and the seller’s description of the specific console still matters.

Ask for evidence before you arrange a purchase
Request current photos and a test video
Ask for clear, current photos of the actual console, its serial label, the controller, and everything included. Request a brief video showing it powering on and producing a picture, plus tests of relevant buttons, ports, internet connection, and the disc drive if it has one. Sony’s PlayStation buying guide recommends checking seller reviews and requesting video proof of tests. A video is useful evidence, but it cannot show every fault.
Ask direct questions and keep answers
- What is the exact model and variant?
- Are there known faults, prior repairs, or missing parts?
- What accessories are included?
- Can the seller demonstrate the functions you intend to use?
- What are the written return and warranty terms, and is any warranty transferable?
Sony notes that third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by a manufacturer warranty; its guidance also says this does not affect statutory rights under applicable law. Check the rules where you live and ask the seller or manufacturer about any specific warranty. Keep the listing and the seller’s answers in writing.

Inspect and test the console before paying
For an in-person purchase, arrange a demonstration in a safe setting where you have enough time to test the functions that matter. Bring a compatible HDMI cable and, if practical, a display, a game, and anything else needed to check the console. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X service instructions list an HDMI cable and display, controller, network connections, game, audio output, and USB connection among standard testing tools. Those instructions are model-specific; adapt the checks to the console you are buying.

Look for cracks, loose or damaged ports, missing parts, signs of repair, and a missing or removed serial label. Confirm that the actual console matches the listing and that all promised accessories are present. Sony advises checking for product damage and removed serial numbers.
- Check picture and sound. Power on the console and connect it to a display with a known-good compatible HDMI cable. Look for a stable picture and listen for clear audio. Try another compatible cable or display if the first setup does not work, so you can distinguish a console fault from a problem with the test equipment.
- Test the controller and connections. Try the sticks, buttons, triggers, wireless connection, and charging where practical. Test USB and any other ports you expect to use. Look for controls that stick, drift, disconnect, or fail to respond.
- Test the disc drive, if present. Check that it accepts, reads, and ejects a disc normally. A digital-only console has no disc drive to test.
- Run a game briefly. Watch for crashes, unexpected shutdowns, overheating warnings, or unusual fan noise. A short demonstration can expose some problems, but it is not a reliability guarantee.
- Check service access and account handover. Where relevant, confirm that the console can connect to its platform service. Have the seller remove or deactivate their account and access as appropriate for that console; do not ask for or keep the seller’s password. Sony warns that a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services, and advises ensuring the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access.
If the seller will not allow reasonable checks or cannot answer basic questions, consider another listing.

For an online marketplace purchase, check the protections first
Choose a listing with photos of the actual item and a detailed description. Ask questions when something is unclear, and move on if the answers are unsatisfactory. Before paying, review the seller’s return policy, the marketplace’s dispute process, and the available payment methods. The US Federal Trade Commission recommends these checks for online marketplace purchases; consumer rights and platform protections vary by country, platform, and transaction.
Do not assume that a used item can be returned simply because you change your mind. eBay says its Money Back Guarantee may cover an item that does not match the listing or arrives faulty or damaged even if the seller says “no returns,” subject to policy and eligibility. Read the current eBay return terms for the listing and your location before relying on that protection.

Make the decision on the whole transaction
Before committing, compare the exact model and revision, disc or digital version, storage, included accessories, disclosed faults, test results, service access, seller reputation, return coverage, and total price including shipping and missing parts. An appealing price is not enough if the console cannot be tested, its condition is unclear, or the transaction leaves you without a practical way to address a problem.
