For most first-time site owners, managed shared hosting is the sensible starting point: the provider handles server configuration, updates, security patching and backups, and beginner-oriented plans cited by Prestige Technologies in 2026 cost less than $15 per month. Move to a managed VPS when your site outgrows shared limits or needs isolation. Choose an unmanaged VPS or a dedicated server only if you can administer a Linux server, apply security patches and respond to failures yourself.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
After choosing the appropriate type, check the uptime service-level agreement (SLA), calculate the renewal cost over several years, and verify that backups, firewall protection, support and migration assistance are actually included. Those checks matter more than a large storage number or a temporary introductory discount.

Web hosting rents you server resources and the network connection that makes a website reachable. The provider supplies a data-center environment, power, connectivity and a control panel or administration interface. You remain responsible for your site’s software, content, accounts and compliance with the provider’s terms.
Hosting a game website is different from renting a game server. A website might contain news, guides, a database, a forum, patch notes or downloadable files. A multiplayer game server needs software, latency characteristics and capacity that are usually sold as a separate product. Confirm that you are buying web hosting for the site you intend to run.

Choose the hosting type before comparing companies
| Type | Who administers the server? | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed shared hosting | The provider handles server configuration, routine software updates, security patching and (when included) backups. | Beginners, small game blogs, portfolios, documentation sites and low-to-moderate traffic WordPress installations. | Multiple customers share resources, so CPU, memory and process limits can affect peak traffic. |
| Managed VPS | The provider manages the operating system and core security work; you manage your applications and site configuration within the VPS. | Growing sites that need more predictable resources, isolation or custom settings without becoming full-time system administrators. | Costs more than shared hosting and still requires more technical decisions than a control-panel plan. |
| Unmanaged VPS | You patch, secure, configure and monitor the virtual server. | Administrators who are comfortable with SSH, firewalls, updates, logs, backups and incident recovery. | The provider may supply only the virtual machine and network. A missed security update or broken configuration is your problem. |
| Dedicated server | Usually you administer the machine unless a management service is purchased. | Workloads that need all of a physical server’s resources, specialized hardware or strict isolation. | Highest operational responsibility and cost; unnecessary for most new sites. |
Why managed shared hosting is the default for beginners
Prestige Technologies’ 2026 guidance identifies managed shared hosting as the best starting point for beginners because routine server work is included and plans aimed at that audience cost less than $15 per month. You can concentrate on publishing and maintaining the site instead of learning patch management, service monitoring and server hardening first.
Shared hosting is not automatically the right answer for every launch. A site with a predictable need for custom background processes, isolated resources or unusual server software may start on a VPS. The deciding question is whether you need those capabilities now and can operate them safely—not whether a VPS sounds more professional.
When a VPS is worth the extra work
A VPS becomes reasonable when shared limits interrupt legitimate work: repeated CPU or memory throttling, inability to install required software, or a need to separate your site from other customers. Ask whether a managed VPS supplies the administration you need. Contabo describes an unmanaged VPS as one where the customer patches and secures the machine; a managed option costs more but removes that recurring overhead.
If you cannot explain how you would log in after a failed update, restore a clean backup, close an exposed port and rotate compromised credentials, do not select an unmanaged VPS merely to save a monthly fee.

Set requirements for your particular site
Write down the site’s requirements before opening pricing pages. A game-news site, mod database and community forum can have very different workloads even when they use the same content-management system.
- Application: Record the content-management system, runtime version, database engine and any required extensions. Confirm that the plan supports them before paying.
- Traffic pattern: Note normal monthly traffic and likely spikes, such as a major release, tournament, showcase or viral post. Ask what happens when you exceed CPU, memory, process or bandwidth limits.
- Storage behavior: Separate ordinary page and media storage from database and search activity. Storage capacity alone does not describe performance.
- Operational skill: Decide who will perform updates, investigate errors, restore backups and answer security alerts. That person’s available time is a requirement.
- Growth plan: Confirm that you can move from shared hosting to a VPS, and later to a dedicated machine if necessary, without rebuilding the site from scratch.
- Migration needs: If you are moving an existing site, establish whether assistance is included, what it covers and whether the provider will help with DNS and email changes.
Read the uptime guarantee as a contract
An uptime percentage is meaningful only when an SLA defines the measurement and remedy. Look for at least a 99.9% commitment backed by a published SLA that states how downtime is counted, which services and regions are covered, what exclusions apply, how you must submit a claim and what compensation is available. A marketing page that says “99.9% uptime” without those details is not an enforceable promise you can evaluate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Advertised availability | Maximum downtime in a 365-day year | What to verify in the SLA |
|---|---|---|
| 99.9% | 8 hours 46 minutes (the 0.1% remainder of 8,760 hours) | Measurement interval, maintenance exclusions, incident definition, claim deadline and service-credit formula. |
| 99.99% | About 52 minutes (the 0.01% remainder of 8,760 hours) | The same terms; a higher percentage is useful only if the provider measures it transparently and pays the stated remedy. |
Prestige Technologies gives these same annual allowances in its 2026 guidance. They are arithmetic limits, not a forecast that a particular provider will experience exactly that much downtime. Scheduled maintenance, network events, account suspensions and customer-caused outages may be excluded, so read the definitions.
What an SLA compensation clause usually means
Compensation is often a service credit rather than cash, and the credit may be capped or require a support ticket within a short period. Check whether the SLA covers your plan, data center and service type. Also check whether the provider can change the SLA and whether credits are your exclusive remedy. A 99.99% figure with broad exclusions can protect you less than a clearly measured 99.9% commitment.

Use monitoring as a second opinion
Advertised uptime is a promise made by the provider. Independent monitoring can reveal how a site performs from outside the provider’s network, but do not treat an unnamed monitoring chart as authoritative. Prestige’s recommendation to check independent monitoring is useful as a due-diligence step; no independent, published dataset for named providers was established here. If you monitor your own site, keep the interval, locations and incident records so you can distinguish a local connection problem from a hosting outage.
Compare the renewal price, not the sign-up banner
The most common pricing trap is a low first-term rate that becomes expensive at renewal. Record the introductory monthly price, the length of that first term, the normal renewal rate, billing frequency, taxes and every add-on required for a usable site. Contabo specifically advises confirming contract length and renewal pricing because the advertised first-term price can rise when the term ends.
| Illustrative plan | First-term rate | Renewal rate | Three-year calculation if the first term lasts 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan A | $2.99/month | $11.99/month | $2.99 × 12 + $11.99 × 24 = $323.64 |
| Plan B | $5.99/month | $7.99/month | $5.99 × 12 + $7.99 × 24 = $263.64 |
Prestige’s 2026 example uses these rates to show why a higher introductory price can be cheaper over three years. The calculation above assumes a 12-month first term; use the actual term in the provider’s contract. If the offer requires a 24- or 36-month prepayment, recalculate with that duration instead of assuming the banner’s monthly number is your bill.
Build a total-cost worksheet
- Copy the first-term price and the exact term length from the checkout page or contract.
- Copy the renewal price for the same billing period. Record whether it applies to the plan, domain, backups, email or other add-ons separately.
- Add one-time migration, setup or restore fees, if any.
- Add recurring charges for backups, security tools, extra storage, email or a control panel when they are not included.
- Calculate the cost for the period you expect to stay—three years is a useful stress test—then divide by the number of months for an apples-to-apples figure.
- Save a dated copy of the terms. Promotional rates and renewal policies can change before your next billing cycle.
Check what is included before buying the smallest plan
Backups and restoration
Ask how often backups run, how many restore points are retained, where they are stored and whether you can restore a single site without opening a ticket. A backup that exists but cannot be downloaded or restored quickly is not a complete recovery plan. Test a restore before the site becomes important.
Firewall and account security
Confirm whether a network firewall or web-application protection is included, what it covers and who maintains the rules. Check for multi-factor authentication, account-level access controls and a way to rotate credentials. The cheapest plan may omit a firewall, as Prestige warns; adding protection later can erase the apparent saving.

Support quality and scope
Find out whether support is available by ticket, chat or phone, and whether agents can troubleshoot the server or only point to documentation. Ask how urgent outages are escalated and whether support includes application errors, DNS, email and migrations. “24/7 support” is not a promise of an immediate engineer unless the terms say so.
Migration assistance
Before purchasing, request the migration procedure in writing. Clarify whether the provider copies files and databases, updates configuration, tests the site, handles DNS, and helps with HTTPS certificates and email. Confirm whether there is a limit on the number of sites or a fee for complex moves. Keep the old host active until you have tested the new site and completed DNS propagation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand storage claims and performance
Storage type matters most when the workload performs frequent reads and writes. Contabo notes that NVMe compared with standard SSD is most significant for database-heavy or high-IOPS workloads. A forum search index, mod catalog or large content database can benefit more from fast storage than a mostly static brochure site.
Do not choose NVMe solely because it appears in a specification list. Ask how much CPU and memory are available, whether resources are shared or reserved, whether input/output operations are limited, and what happens after a quota is reached. A smaller plan with balanced resources can outperform a plan advertising more storage.

Follow this provider-selection process
- Describe the site and its workload. List the application, database, traffic pattern, storage growth, peak events and people responsible for administration.
- Eliminate unsuitable hosting types. If you do not want to patch a server, remove unmanaged VPS and dedicated plans from consideration. If you need custom services or isolation, remove plans that cannot provide them.
- Shortlist plans with the required software. Verify runtime versions, database support, process limits, file limits, bandwidth policy and the ability to use HTTPS and scheduled tasks.
- Read the SLA. Record the guaranteed percentage, measurement method, exclusions, claim process and compensation. Do not rely on a badge or a home-page sentence.
- Calculate three-year cost. Use the actual first-term duration, renewal rate and paid add-ons. Keep promotional pricing separate from recurring pricing.
- Audit operations. Confirm backups, restore access, firewall protection, authentication controls, support escalation and migration help.
- Check the growth route. Ask how to upgrade resources and whether a move from shared hosting to managed VPS or dedicated service preserves your files, database and IP-related configuration.
- Test before committing long term. If a trial or short billing period is available, install a representative copy, run updates, restore a backup and measure response during a normal publishing task.
- Document the decision. Save the order, SLA, renewal terms, support contacts and recovery instructions in a location independent of the hosting account.
Plan a safe migration
- Lower the DNS time-to-live before the move, where your current DNS provider allows it, so a later change propagates more quickly.
- Take a fresh, verified backup of files, databases, configuration and email. Keep an untouched copy offline or in storage controlled by you.
- Create the new account and restrict access while you configure it. Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication.
- Copy the site and database, then update connection strings, file permissions, scheduled jobs and environment variables for the new server.
- Test with a temporary hostname or hosts-file entry. Check login, search, forms, downloads, images, redirects, HTTPS, database writes and any game-related API integrations.
- Restore a backup into a test location to prove that recovery works on the new provider.
- Change DNS only after the test passes. Watch logs, error rates, contact forms, payment or account flows and download links during the transition.
- Keep the old hosting account and its backups until DNS caches have expired and you have completed a final verification. Cancel only after you know the new site is authoritative.
Recognize warning signs before you pay
- The provider shows an uptime percentage but no accessible SLA or compensation procedure.
- The checkout page displays only the first-term price and hides the renewal rate until after payment.
- Backups are advertised without retention, restore instructions or a clear answer about where copies are stored.
- A “managed” plan does not state which operating-system updates and security tasks the provider performs.
- Support promises are broad, but there is no escalation path for an outage or failed migration.
- The plan advertises unlimited storage or bandwidth while imposing undisclosed CPU, process, inode or database limits.
- There is no documented route to increase resources or migrate away with a complete copy of your data.
Decision examples
New game guide site
Choose managed shared hosting if the site is new, traffic is uncertain and you want the provider to handle server maintenance. Prioritize dependable backups, usable support and transparent renewal terms over a large storage allowance.
Established community with a busy database
Consider a managed VPS when shared-resource limits affect the database or forum and you need more predictable capacity. Confirm that the provider will manage the operating system while you retain control over the application and database settings.
Technical team running a specialized service
An unmanaged VPS or dedicated server can make sense when someone on the team is accountable for patching, firewall configuration, monitoring and recovery. Put those duties on a written rota; the lower management fee is not a substitute for labor.
What to do when the site goes down
- Check the provider’s status page and your independent monitor, then test the site from another network to rule out a local DNS or connectivity issue.
- Review recent changes, deployments, certificate expiry and resource alerts. Do not repeatedly restart services without preserving logs.
- Open a support ticket using the SLA’s outage channel and record the incident start time, affected services and ticket number.
- If the provider confirms an outage, ask for the incident scope, estimated restoration and whether the event qualifies for an SLA claim.
- If the problem is an application change, roll back using your tested backup or deployment process. Never delete the only copy of the current data.
- After recovery, document the cause, duration and corrective action. Submit any SLA claim within the stated deadline rather than assuming the provider will apply a credit automatically.
The best provider in 2026 is not the one with the lowest introductory number or the largest specification. It is the one whose management level matches your skills, whose SLA can be enforced, whose renewal price fits your budget and whose backups, security and support you can verify before a failure occurs.
