Check the live game before following older build advice: Ankama announced substantial rule changes in 2025, but the available announcements do not confirm which details are live as of October 7, 2026.
Check which version of Waven a build describes
Waven’s team-building rules have changed in the material available to players. Ankama’s August 5, 2025 community update described a substantial redesign, including changes to decks, companions, and equipment. The post framed those details as work in progress, so treat them as announced mechanics rather than confirmed instructions for the current client.
Older descriptions can refer to a different ruleset. Ankama’s 2023 fact sheet presents Waven as a turn-based tactical RPG with deck-building, spells, companions, and equipment. An older JeuxOnLine overview describes classes, elemental gauges, equipment, and decks of six to fifteen spells. Those details are historical context, not a reliable basis for a current build where they conflict with the later redesign.
Ankama’s December 10, 2025 announcement said the studio planned to present its 2026 direction on December 17; that page does not establish what was subsequently announced or which mechanics are live now. Check the in-game card text, deck rules, and available choices before investing in a build.

Start with the hero and the role you want to play
First decide what you want your team to do: for example, pressure opponents quickly, hold the field, or build toward a particular spell-and-companion interaction. These are planning approaches, not evidence that Waven requires fixed tank, healer, or damage-dealer slots.
Then look at the selected hero’s defining abilities and passive. In Ankama’s announced 2025 redesign, each hero has four unique spells and one unique passive, while most other spells are shared. If those rules apply in your version, the hero’s distinctive tools are a natural starting point: choose a plan that uses them, rather than assembling strong-looking cards without a common purpose.

Make spells and companions serve one plan
Think of every deck choice as part of the same plan. A spell might enable the hero’s strengths, help create the conditions for a companion to matter, or provide a needed resource. A companion might reinforce the role you chose or contribute an effect that makes the spell package more useful. Keep a card only when you can explain what it adds to the team.
Under the announced redesign, spells and companions share a 16-card deck. Companions become cards played from hand; after being played, they return to the draw pile. If a companion is drawn while still on the field, the post says it can be played onto itself to rank up for a reduced Command Point cost. The update also says ranking up improves its attack and health and heals it, and that companions unlock a unique special spell at a given level. These are descriptions of the redesign, not verified current-client directions, so check the live rules before building around them.

Check whether the deck can pay for its plan
A coherent team can still falter if its cards demand resources it cannot reliably produce. In the announced system, spells spend Action Points and companions require Command Points. Ankama’s post says Command Points come from particular board actions or spell cards.
If those mechanics apply to your version, review the plan card by card: identify what it costs, how you will generate the resource, and whether you can afford the key play when you need it. A companion with a useful effect is not automatically a good fit if your deck has no dependable way to pay its Command Point cost. Likewise, spell choices should match the Action Points your plan can use.

Use these checks to compare candidate spells and companions without assuming that any untested combination is optimal:
- Role fit: Does the choice contribute to the combat plan you chose for the hero?
- Synergy: Do the hero’s unique abilities, spells, and companion effects reinforce one another?
- Resource fit: If the announced rules apply, can the deck generate and spend the Action Points or Command Points its key plays require?
- Version and mode: Does the advice match the rules currently shown in your game and the activity you intend to play, such as PvE or PvP?
The available sources do not establish current mode-specific builds, tested combinations, or a definitive hero, spell, or companion ranking. Treat online recipes as suggestions to verify against your own client, not as proven best teams.

Recheck equipment and other older build advice
Equipment is a particular version trap. Older Waven descriptions include equipment as part of a build, but Ankama’s 2025 redesign announcement said rings, armbands, and brooches were to be removed. Because the announcement does not verify the current client, use the equipment options actually shown in your game rather than assuming either the older system or the announced change applies unchanged.
