For a ready-made VTuber look, StreamElements’ free Anime Theme Package is a documented place to start: it bundles several scenes with an animated alert, themed chat, and event labels. It is not a proven universal winner—available information describes the vendor’s offering rather than independent comparisons. Choose an overlay for how well it fits your avatar and leaves the game readable, then add only the widgets your channel needs.
What a stream overlay does
StreamElements Docs defines overlays as “the visuals layered on top of your stream — alerts, labels, goals, chat — composed in the StreamElements Overlay Editor and rendered in your broadcast software via a single browser source.” An overlay’s design and its functions are separate decisions: a scene can frame the avatar and gameplay, while widgets surface events such as alerts, goals, or chat.
A documented free option: StreamElements Anime Theme Package
StreamElements describes its Anime Theme Package as an animated anime stream package designed by anime illustrator Mercedes Bazan and says it is 100% free. The listing includes:
- Starting Soon, Be Right Back, Stream Ended, and Chatting scenes.
- A modular, customizable gaming scene.
- An animated alert and themed chat box.
- Labels for recent subscriber, follower, tipper, and cheer events.
- Listed support for Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, and Trovo.
Those contents make it relevant to VTubers seeking an anime-oriented starting point, but the listing does not establish that it will suit every avatar, game layout, or platform setup. StreamElements’ Elements Gallery also has categories for themes, alerts, widgets, scenes, and labels, with examples attributed to kudos.tv and Own3d, plus a Fiverr link for custom design. Treat these as options to assess, not endorsements.

How to choose an overlay for your avatar and game
Check visual fit and usable space
Look for a palette and visual style that complement the avatar without competing with it. Leave the game’s important information visible, and reserve enough clear space for any on-screen text. The available vendor materials show customizable packages, but do not score visual quality or provide formal accessibility or legibility measurements.
Decide what should be on screen
Choose widgets for a reason: event alerts, recent-event labels, goals, or visible chat can each serve a purpose, but every element takes space and attention. A package that includes many widgets does not require you to show them all.

Balance ready-made and custom design
StreamElements says its editor supports no-code setup for overlays, alerts, and widgets; it also supports custom widgets that can be coded. A prebuilt theme can reduce design and setup work, while editing or coding offers more control over a specific channel identity. A bespoke design is another route, but the Gallery’s Fiverr link alone does not establish a particular service’s availability or quality.
Check platform and motion needs
The Anime Theme Package listing names Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, and Trovo. Confirm that a theme and its widgets meet the current requirements of the platforms you actually use. StreamElements offers static and animated overlay options; animation may suit a channel’s look, but the documentation does not provide comparative performance measurements.

Add a StreamElements overlay to OBS
For the documented StreamElements workflow, add the overlay as an OBS Browser source. The steps below use the settings in StreamElements’ guide; match them to your actual stream and source dimensions rather than treating them as universal requirements.
- Set up the overlay. In the StreamElements dashboard or editor, choose a gallery package or build your overlay, then copy its overlay URL.
- Add it in OBS. In OBS, add a Browser source and paste the overlay URL into its URL field.
- Set source dimensions. Use width 1920 and height 1080 unless you have changed the overlay’s source resolution.
- Choose a frame rate. StreamElements suggests 30 or 60 FPS depending on your stream settings and computer capability.
- Leave Custom CSS at its default for this setup. Change it only if you have a specific reason and know what the change does.
- Position and size the source. Move or resize the overlay in its editor or in the OBS preview. StreamElements says multiple overlays can be used in OBS.
- Keep the URL private. StreamElements warns that the overlay URL contains a sensitive token. Do not publish it or expose it in screenshots or shared setup instructions.

Make chat readable without crowding the layout
For its Twitch chat widget, StreamElements recommends creating the overlay at the desired resolution (it recommends 1080p), adding the stream chat widget, and adjusting its size, theme, font, color, text size, and text shadow. Its documentation says the widget supports Twitch emotes, including animated ones, as well as BTTV, FFZ, and 7TV emotes; unlisted 7TV emotes are not supported. This is documented support for that widget, not a guarantee for every overlay tool.
Place chat and alerts where they do not cover the avatar, important game information, or text the audience needs to read. Preview the layout at the output size you intend to stream; the vendor’s styling controls are available, but no formal legibility measurements are provided.

Common setup problems and fixes
- The overlay is cropped or misplaced: Check the Browser source width and height against the overlay resolution, then reposition or resize it in OBS or the editor.
- Animation looks mismatched to the stream: Compare the Browser source FPS with your stream settings and what your computer can handle; the guide suggests 30 or 60 FPS according to those factors.
- Chat or alerts obscure the game or avatar: Resize or move the relevant widget, adjust its text styling, or remove elements you do not need.
- A shared setup exposes the overlay URL: Remove the URL from public screenshots or instructions and replace or update it if the sensitive token may have been exposed. The documentation identifies the token as sensitive; check the current StreamElements controls for managing a compromised URL.
- An emote does not appear: Check whether it is an unlisted 7TV emote, which StreamElements says its Twitch chat widget does not support.
