The available information here covers current gaming PCs, PlayStation 5 models and Xbox Series X|S; it does not establish specifications or release timing for a future PlayStation or Xbox generation.
Start with the games, friends and setup you actually want
Before comparing hardware, answer these questions. They often settle the choice faster than a spec sheet.
- Which games matter? List the titles you play now and the ones you most want next. Check which platforms support each one, and whether the specific game supports cross-play.
- Where do your friends play? Social compatibility is game-specific. A shared platform can make joining friends simpler, but cross-play may let people on different systems play together for some titles.
- What is your full budget and country? Include the system, any display or input devices you need, storage, games and subscriptions. Prices and subscription terms vary by market.
- What equipment do you already own? A suitable TV, monitor, controller, keyboard or mouse can change the cost of switching platforms.
- Do you prefer a desk or a couch? Consider where the system will live and whether you prefer controller play, keyboard and mouse, or both.
- How much configuration and upkeep do you want? Decide whether choosing components, adjusting settings and troubleshooting are appealing or a burden.
- Would you use the system for more than games? A PC can also serve as a general-purpose computer; a console is principally a gaming and entertainment device.
Once you have those answers, compare the platforms that support your games and fit your budget. A platform’s headline hardware feature cannot tell you how a particular game will run at your chosen settings.
What each option is best suited to
Gaming PC
A gaming PC suits players who want to choose their hardware and settings, access PC games and software, or use one computer for gaming and other tasks. Its performance depends on its components and the requirements of each game. Microsoft notes that PC game requirements vary and performance scales with system hardware on its Xbox on PC page.
#1 Best Overall
- Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
- Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
- Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
- Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
- Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
That flexibility comes with decisions: you need to select a system that meets the requirements of the games you care about, choose suitable peripherals and be willing to manage a computer. A prebuilt PC can reduce the work of assembling components, but it does not remove the need to check the system against game requirements.
PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro
Choose a PlayStation if the games you want and the people you play with make that ecosystem the best fit. PS5 Pro adds advanced ray tracing and Sony’s AI upscaling technology, PSSR, with faster or smoother gameplay in supported titles; the improvements depend on the game. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement names games receiving PS5 Pro Enhanced updates rather than promising identical enhancements in every title.
Compare the PS5 and PS5 Pro against your display and the games you play. If a particular game’s Pro enhancements do not matter to you, the premium may not advance your priorities. Check the version and price available in your region before deciding.

Xbox Series X and Series S
Xbox Series X|S may be the right fit if your preferred games and friends are there, or if you value Xbox’s console ecosystem. Microsoft’s Series X|S comparison lists shared features, backward play across four generations, and support for up to 120 FPS. That maximum is conditional: high-resolution, high-frame-rate modes need compatible game content and a supported display. It is not a promise that every game runs at 4K and 120 FPS.

Xbox also connects to Windows PC in specific ways. Xbox Play Anywhere lets you play eligible digital games across Xbox, Windows PC and supported handhelds without buying the game again. Eligibility is limited to participating titles, so check the game’s listing; it does not give every Xbox console game a PC license. Microsoft’s Xbox on PC page also explains Windows app requirements and game-specific PC requirements.
Compare the real costs, not just the system price
Build a like-for-like budget for your location. A lower initial price can be offset by equipment you need to buy or by ongoing costs. Include these items for each platform:

- The console or PC configuration that meets your needs.
- A suitable TV or monitor, if you do not already have one.
- Controllers, keyboard, mouse, headset or other necessary peripherals.
- Extra storage, if your game library requires it.
- The games you expect to buy, including any platform-specific titles on your list.
- Any subscription you want, while treating it as optional unless a specific feature you need requires it.
There is no established official comparison showing that PC or console ownership is cheaper for every buyer. The answer depends on the hardware and equipment you already own, local prices, the games you buy and any subscriptions you choose.
Prices are especially time- and region-sensitive. Sony announced global PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal price changes effective April 2, 2026; consult its regional price announcement for the market you are in. Xbox likewise notes that product prices and options, as well as Game Pass terms, vary by market, and subscriptions are sold separately on its comparison page. Check current local pricing and the exact configuration before buying.
Match performance claims to your display and games
First set a realistic target: the games you play, the resolution and frame rate you want, and whether your TV or monitor supports them. Then check the exact game’s features and the system’s requirements. Console support for a mode does not mean every game offers it; PC performance depends on the selected hardware and game settings.

For example, Xbox lists support up to 120 FPS, but reaching high resolution and frame rates requires compatible content and a supported display. Sony presents PS5 Pro enhancements as game-dependent. These are useful feature descriptions, not a controlled comparison against a PC with specified components, settings and the same game.
Avoid treating a console’s advertised feature or a teraflop figure as a direct comparison with an unspecified PC. To compare actual performance, you would need results for the same game under comparable settings and conditions. The official platform information cited here does not provide a universal console-versus-PC benchmark.

Choose a PC when configuration and broader use are worth the effort
A PC is a stronger fit if you value adjustable hardware and settings, want access to PC software and games, or need the machine for work and other general-purpose tasks. The trade-off is responsibility for choosing hardware that meets each game’s requirements and handling computer setup and maintenance.
PC features can expand, but they remain specific to the supported titles and hardware. In July 2026, Xbox announced backward compatibility on PC beginning with four original Xbox games. Its published minimum and recommended PC requirements illustrate that even this feature has hardware requirements; the announcement is not a performance benchmark for modern games. See Microsoft’s backward compatibility on PC announcement for the details.
A practical decision rule
- Remove platforms that do not support must-play games. Verify each game rather than assuming it is available everywhere.
- Check how you will play with friends. Confirm cross-play for the specific games or favor the platform your group uses.
- Price a complete setup in your country. Include existing equipment only if it is actually suitable for the games and display target you have in mind.
- Set the performance target. Check game-specific modes, requirements and display compatibility instead of relying on a headline number.
- Choose your preferred trade-off. Favor a console ecosystem if easy setup is central; favor PC if configuration, PC access or general-purpose use justifies the added decisions.
If you are still undecided, rank your priorities in this order: must-play games, friends and cross-play, complete local cost, preferred play space, then configuration and upgrade flexibility. The platform that best satisfies your highest-ranked priorities is the better purchase for you.
How to read player statistics
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey reports hardware distributions among Steam customers, not all PC gamers, and it is not a direct console-versus-PC performance test. Valve says, “Participation in the survey is optional, and anonymous.” Treat its figures as a snapshot of that population, not evidence that one platform is more powerful, cheaper or more popular overall. See the Steam Hardware & Software Survey.
