How to Choose Between a PC and Console for Upcoming Games

Check your must-play games first, then compare confirmed platforms, full setup costs, PC requirements, console formats and the way you prefer to play.

Choose the platform that supports the upcoming games you most want to play, then compare the full cost and setup for those options. Check each game’s official platform announcement before buying: release calendars help you find titles, but only the publisher or developer can confirm where a particular game is coming out. There is no universal winner on price or performance.

Start with the games you actually want to play

  1. Make a shortlist. Write down the upcoming games that matter enough to influence your purchase.
  2. Check each game’s official listing. Look for announced platforms, release date and any exclusivity information on its publisher or developer page. EA’s Coming Soon page is one example of a publisher listing supported platforms and dates.
  3. Use calendars to discover, not confirm. Games Coming Out’s 2026 calendar and GamesRadar’s release roundup can help you spot titles across platforms. Verify any decision-critical game with its publisher, because release dates and platform plans for unreleased games can change.
  4. Recheck before purchase. A platform listing today is not a guarantee that plans will remain unchanged. Confirm the game’s current status when you are ready to buy hardware.

Do not assume that a game coming to console will also have a PC version, or that an announced PC version has requirements published yet. If a priority title is not confirmed for your preferred platform, treat its availability as unknown rather than counting on it.

Compare the complete cost, not just the hardware price

Build a local, current estimate for each compatible option. Include the computer or console, any display or peripherals you actually need, the games you expect to buy, and subscriptions relevant to your multiplayer or library use. Existing equipment may reduce what you need to purchase; do not add a new monitor or accessories if your current setup works for you.

  • PC: Price a computer whose components meet the requirements of the games on your shortlist. Add a display, controller, keyboard or mouse only if you need them.
  • Console: Compare the exact model and media format you intend to buy, plus any display or accessories missing from your setup.
  • Both: Include the actual games and subscription services you expect to use, checking their current local prices and terms.

The available product and release information does not establish a general PC-versus-console cost winner. The result depends on your shortlist, existing devices, local prices and what else you need from the system.

For PC, match components to each game’s requirements

A PC is not one fixed specification. Compare the exact processor, graphics hardware, memory and other components in the computer you are considering with the requirements published for each game. Minimum and recommended requirements answer different questions, so read the publisher’s wording rather than treating a platform label such as “PC” as a performance guarantee.

If requirements have not been announced for an unreleased game, you cannot reliably confirm from the available information that a particular computer will run it. Avoid buying a configuration on that assumption. For either PC or console, look for game-specific performance details where available; the platform name alone does not establish how a particular game will perform.

Check console model, media format and library access

Console versions and formats can differ in storage and disc support. For example, Sony’s official PS5 page lists a model with 1 TB storage and Blu-ray disc play, and a PS5 Digital Edition with 825 GB storage and no included disc drive. Those descriptions are specific to the models listed on that page; check current model details and regional availability before choosing.

Sony says PS5 consoles are backward compatible with PS4 games. Its page also states that from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. If physical purchases or an existing disc library matter to you, confirm that notice and the exact model’s disc support when you buy.

For either platform, factor in the games you already own, the storefront or account they are tied to, and the terms of any subscription library you expect to use. Access through a subscription is not the same as owning a game outright; check current terms for the specific service and title.

Choose the setup that fits how you play

After game availability and cost, consider how you will use the system. These are personal trade-offs, not universal advantages of one platform:

  • Who you play with: Friends’ platforms and a game’s multiplayer support may affect your choice. Confirm cross-play for the titles you care about instead of assuming it.
  • Accessibility: Check the options in the games themselves and the platform’s controls or accessibility features against your needs.
  • Other uses: A PC may serve non-gaming needs as well. Include that value only if you will actually use it for those tasks.
  • Existing gear and library: Reusing a compatible display, peripherals or games can change the practical cost of either choice.

A practical decision rule

  • Lean toward PC if your priority games are announced for PC, you value the flexibility of a computer, and you are prepared to select hardware against their requirements.
  • Lean toward a console if your priority games are confirmed for that console and its standard hardware setup fits your preferred way to play.
  • Wait or recheck if a must-play game’s platform, PC requirements, release date or relevant console format is not yet clear.

Use the rule only after checking your specific games and costs: neither platform is the best choice for everyone, and plans for upcoming releases can change.
