Choose an Xbox Series X|S if you mainly play at home and want dedicated hardware; choose a Windows handheld if you want to install games and play portably; choose Xbox Cloud Gaming if you would rather stream supported games to a device you already own. They overlap: consoles can stream, handhelds can install or stream, and supported handhelds can remotely play from your home console.
How the three Xbox options differ
Xbox Series X|S: a home console that can also stream
An Xbox Series X|S is the dedicated home-hardware option. It can play games locally and is also listed by Xbox as a device for cloud gaming. With remote features enabled, it can act as the source for remote play to a supported device when the console is on or in Sleep mode.
Windows handheld: installed play, streaming, and remote play
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are ASUS handhelds running Windows 11 Home. Xbox describes them as supporting game installation, streaming, and remote play from a home Xbox. Supported Xbox Play Anywhere games can also share saves, add-ons, and achievements across PC, console, and supported handhelds through your Xbox account. Those cross-device features apply to supported games, not automatically to every title.
Xbox’s listed manufacturer specifications distinguish the two models as follows; they are not independent performance or battery-life test results:

Xbox warns that actual game performance can vary with settings and hardware requirements. Its handheld compatibility labels—“Handheld optimized,” “Mostly compatible,” “Unsupported,” and “Not tested”—describe compatibility status, not a guaranteed frame rate. Some titles may need settings changes. Check a game’s current status at Xbox Handheld Compatibility.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: streaming to supported devices
Cloud gaming runs a supported game remotely and streams it to your device, rather than installing and running it locally. Xbox lists supported browsers on phones, tablets, and PCs, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and selected Meta Quest VR headsets. Support depends on device and region; confirm both before relying on a particular screen.

Xbox says selected free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Other cloud games generally require an eligible plan, and some games owned or purchased outside Game Pass can also be streamed. Cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass, according to Xbox’s US service page.
Which option fits your situation?
| If you value… | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing mostly at home on a dedicated gaming system | Xbox Series X|S | It runs games locally and can also support cloud play and remote play. |
| Portable play with games installed on the device | Windows handheld | It can install games as well as stream or remotely play them; suitable installed games may be playable offline. |
| Using screens and devices you already own | Xbox Cloud Gaming | It can avoid buying a dedicated gaming device if your device, region, game, and plan are supported. |
| Playing away from home using your own console library | Handheld remote play | Remote play connects to games installed on your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One; it depends on the console being configured and available. |
Check these six things before choosing
1. Where you will play
Home-first play points toward a console. If you want portable installed play, a handheld is the more direct fit. If you mostly want to use a phone, tablet, computer, TV, or other supported screen, cloud gaming may be the simplest route.

2. Hardware you already own
Cloud gaming can make sense when your existing device is supported and you have a reliable connection. A handheld adds a self-contained gaming device; a console anchors a home setup. Compare the added hardware against how often you would use it, rather than treating all three as mutually exclusive.
3. Connection quality
Xbox specifies at least 10 Mbps download speed for cloud gaming, says some devices may require 20 Mbps for best quality, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are service guidance, not a promise of smooth play: Xbox also notes that performance depends on connection, location, device, and other factors. See the current Xbox Cloud Gaming requirements.

4. Installed play versus streaming
Cloud play requires network access. Handhelds can install games, which may allow offline play for suitable installed titles, but not every game works offline and not every Game Pass title is downloadable. Check the specific game’s requirements before planning to play without a connection.
5. Your exact game, plan, and region
Availability is not identical across cloud catalogs, subscription tiers, regions, and platforms. Confirm that the game you want is cloud-playable or handheld-compatible, that your plan grants access where needed, and that your device is supported in your country. Catalogs and service features change over time.

6. Recurring access and limits
Compare the plan you would need and its current cloud-playtime allowance with the cost of buying hardware and the games you already own. Xbox’s US plan page, accessed October 7, 2026, displayed Essential with 50+ games and 5 monthly cloud-play hours, Premium with 200+ games and 10 hours, and Ultimate with 500+ games and 15 hours. These are volatile, market-specific page figures—not universal or permanent allowances. Check the current plan details for your country; the page did not provide stable subscription prices in the information reviewed here.

Cloud gaming checklist
- A supported device and a supported region.
- A game available for cloud play and, in most cases, an eligible Game Pass plan. Selected free-to-play games are an exception in supported regions.
- A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller; selected games also offer touch controls.
- At least 10 Mbps download speed, with Xbox noting that some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- For browser play at xbox.com, a supported browser such as Edge, Chrome, or Safari.
Remote play checklist
- A supported Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One with remote features enabled.
- The console must be on or in Sleep mode so the supported device can connect to it.
- A supported device and internet connection. Remote play uses games installed on the console; it is different from cloud gaming, which streams from Microsoft’s servers.
Xbox’s service overview describes Cloud Gaming as letting people “play hundreds of console games on the devices you already have.” That describes the convenience of streaming, but it does not mean every game, device, or region is supported.
