Choose OCTOPATH TRAVELER if you want eight traveler-led stories, characters whose individual abilities affect exploration, and battles centered on weakness targeting and stored Boost Points.
Both games use Square Enix’s HD-2D presentation and turn-based combat, but they ask you to organize your play in different ways. The most important practical issue is the edition you buy: Nintendo describes a free Switch 2 update for DRAGON QUEST III, while OCTOPATH TRAVELER has a separate Switch 2 version whose save data is incompatible with the original Switch release.

The decision in one sentence
Pick DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake for a single, continuous heroic journey in which you build the supporting party yourself. Pick OCTOPATH TRAVELER for a multi-protagonist format that lets eight travelers’ separate adventures and abilities define the experience.
That recommendation is based on the documented story structures, party systems, exploration abilities and combat rules. Official product descriptions do not establish which game has the better writing, shorter campaign, easier difficulty or more enjoyable battles, so those are not treated as objective differences here.

Choose by the kind of story you want
A single heroic quest: DRAGON QUEST III
DRAGON QUEST III frames the adventure around Ortega’s child taking up the quest against Baramos. The central premise gives the game a clear narrative spine: one hero’s mission, with recruited companions supporting that mission. Square Enix identifies this remake as the narrative beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy, so it is the fit for someone who wants a classic party-based quest rather than a collection of parallel protagonists.
The appeal of this structure is control over the supporting cast. Your main character remains the anchor while you decide which allies to recruit and how their vocations shape the party. If you want the feeling of preparing one team for a long world quest, this is the more direct match.
Eight traveler stories: OCTOPATH TRAVELER
OCTOPATH TRAVELER is built around eight travelers and eight adventures. You choose which route to follow and which characters join, so the game’s identity comes from moving among distinct protagonists rather than following one hero from beginning to end.
Recommended Free Tools
This is the better fit if you want character-centered variety as the organizing principle. The official description does not promise a ranking of the eight stories or specify how much time each receives, so choose it for the format itself: multiple travelers, selectable paths and a cast whose individual identities matter to how you interact with the world.
How to decide when both structures appeal
- Ask whether you want one quest to remain the narrative center. If yes, start with DRAGON QUEST III.
- If you would rather select among several protagonists and routes, start with OCTOPATH TRAVELER.
- If neither structure is a priority, use the combat and party sections below; those systems provide the sharper distinction.
Party building and character roles
Vocations and recruited allies in DRAGON QUEST III
DRAGON QUEST III makes party construction an explicit activity. You recruit allies, select vocations and customize appearance and voice. The listed roles cover familiar tactical functions: Warrior, Martial Artist, Priest, Mage, Thief, Sage and Monster Wrangler.
Rank #2
- Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills.
- The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights.
- The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish. You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night.
- Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more. Where will you go? What will you do? Every path is yours to take.
- Familiar mechanics from the original game have been preserved, like the freedom to develop your travelers’ jobs and skills, as well as the Break and Boost system that made battles so exhilarating. New mechanics have also been added.
That list matters because the game does not present the party as a fixed group whose roles are entirely predetermined. Your decision is about how to assemble a team around the central quest. A player who enjoys assigning jobs, balancing complementary abilities and revisiting party composition will find that the vocation system is the defining choice.
Monster Wrangler adds another party-building angle. In addition to recruiting human allies, the game includes friendly-monster recruitment and Monster Arena tournaments. Those features give the party system a collection and competition component without changing the main premise: you are still building a team for the hero’s journey.
Individual traveler identities in OCTOPATH TRAVELER
OCTOPATH TRAVELER gives each traveler an individual role and special abilities. Those abilities are not limited to combat; they also affect interaction with the world. The result is a party in which the question is not only “which job should this ally have?” but also “which traveler’s ability is useful for this situation?”
Choose OCTOPATH TRAVELER if you prefer characters to bring their own defined identity and world-facing utility. The game’s design makes the eight travelers part of both the story format and the mechanical toolkit. You are selecting a combination of people and abilities while moving among their adventures.
Party-system decision rule
- Choose DRAGON QUEST III when customization of recruited companions and vocations is the main attraction.
- Choose OCTOPATH TRAVELER when distinct travelers and their personal interaction abilities are more important than constructing roles from a shared vocation list.
How the combat systems differ
DRAGON QUEST III: commands, skills and weaknesses
Nintendo describes DRAGON QUEST III’s combat as classic turn-based battles using ally skills and enemy weaknesses. The turn-based format lets you issue commands deliberately rather than relying on real-time reactions. Party composition therefore connects directly to combat: the vocations you selected determine which kinds of ally skills you can bring into a fight.
Rank #3
- Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills

Enemy weaknesses are another documented consideration. You are not limited to repeating one attack type; reading the encounter and using an appropriate ally skill is part of the stated battle loop. Friendly-monster recruitment and Monster Arena tournaments extend the game’s systems beyond ordinary encounters, giving players additional reasons to engage with monster-related features.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER: weaknesses and Boost Points
OCTOPATH TRAVELER also targets enemy weaknesses, but its defining battle resource is the Boost Point system. Boost Points accumulate each turn. You can spend stored points to strengthen abilities, chain attacks or help allies.
This creates a resource-timing decision inside the turn-based structure. You may use a point to increase the impact of an ability, save points for a stronger action later, or spend them in a way that supports another traveler. The official description establishes those options, but it does not quantify damage, encounter frequency or the exact amount of planning required.
Which combat description matches you?
| If you value… | More natural fit |
|---|---|
| Building a team around chosen vocations and using its skills against weaknesses | DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake |
| Managing a shared, accumulating resource to amplify attacks or assist allies | OCTOPATH TRAVELER |
| Monster recruitment and tournament activities as part of the broader game | DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake |
| Character-specific abilities that matter in battle and world interaction | OCTOPATH TRAVELER |
Neither system can be declared objectively better from the official descriptions alone. The useful distinction is whether you want party construction to begin with vocations or tactical choices to revolve around Boost Points and traveler-specific abilities.
World interaction and exploration choices
DRAGON QUEST III’s customization-first approach
In DRAGON QUEST III, the documented exploration-adjacent choices are tied to the party you assemble. Recruiting allies and selecting vocations changes the tools available to your group, while friendly-monster recruitment adds another system to pursue. If you want your preparation decisions to define the party that travels through the world, this structure is the more relevant one.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER’s ability-driven approach
OCTOPATH TRAVELER gives travelers special abilities for interacting with the world. Those abilities are part of the reason to consider who joins your group, not merely a story detail. A player who likes choosing a character because that character changes how situations can be approached should favor this design.
The official information does not enumerate every interaction, map outcome or route variation. The safe conclusion is narrower: OCTOPATH TRAVELER explicitly ties character identity to world interaction, while DRAGON QUEST III emphasizes recruited allies, vocations and monster-related party systems.

DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake
Nintendo lists the Nintendo Switch release date as November 14, 2024. Nintendo also says Switch 2 players can download a free update that improves graphics and lets them choose whether to prioritize frame rate or graphics.
Square Enix’s Asia news announcement lists availability on November 14, 2024 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store on Windows. Edition features can differ by platform, so check the listing for the system you own before purchase.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER
Nintendo lists the original Nintendo Switch release as July 13, 2018. A separate Nintendo listing for the Switch 2 version gives October 1, 2026 as its release date and warns that save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions.
Best Value
- Play as eight different characters, each with their own stories to uncover and side quests to complete.
- Explore the enchanting yet perilous world of Orsterra, spanning 8 vast regions and discover each character’s full story as their journey unfolds.
- Use each character's distinctive abilities (Path Actions), skills and talents in frenetic battles.
- Enjoy the accessible yet deep turn-based combat battle system and break through enemy lines by identifying and targeting their weaknesses.
- Solve side quests and story scenarios in a few different ways and take decisions that shape your path.
Because October 1, 2026 has passed, verify the live regional listing rather than relying only on an older announcement. The incompatibility warning is the practical issue: do not assume that buying or switching editions will carry an existing save forward.
Edition checklist before paying
- Identify your exact console: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Windows PC where applicable.
- For DRAGON QUEST III on Switch 2, confirm that you are buying the Switch version that receives the free update or the edition displayed for your console.
- For OCTOPATH TRAVELER, decide whether you need the original Switch version or the separate Switch 2 version.
- If moving from Switch to Switch 2 with OCTOPATH TRAVELER, plan as though saves will not transfer; Nintendo’s listing states that the data is incompatible.
- Check your region’s current price, stock and physical-versus-digital format at purchase time. No single current price comparison is established here.
Which game should different players choose?
Choose DRAGON QUEST III if you want…
- One central hero and a continuous quest against Baramos.
- A party assembled from recruited allies rather than a fixed cast structure.
- Vocation selection as the main way to customize roles.
- Options including Warrior, Martial Artist, Priest, Mage, Thief, Sage and Monster Wrangler.
- Friendly-monster recruitment and Monster Arena tournaments alongside the main adventure.
- The narrative beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy as presented by Square Enix.
Choose OCTOPATH TRAVELER if you want…
- Eight travelers and eight adventures instead of one protagonist’s single route.
- The freedom to choose which path to follow and who joins.
- Character-specific abilities that affect world interaction as well as battle.
- Turn-based fights built around enemy weaknesses and accumulated Boost Points.
- The ability to spend Boost Points to strengthen abilities, chain attacks or help allies.
If you are new to Japanese role-playing games
Neither official listing establishes that one game is easier, shorter or universally better for beginners. Use structure as the deciding factor. A newcomer who wants one clear protagonist and a party they can shape should begin with DRAGON QUEST III. A newcomer who is excited by selecting among eight travelers and learning how their individual abilities affect play should begin with OCTOPATH TRAVELER.
If you are choosing based on combat alone
Start with the resource model you find more appealing. DRAGON QUEST III connects combat preparation to recruited allies and vocations, with skills used against weaknesses. OCTOPATH TRAVELER adds Boost Points that build each turn and can be spent for stronger or coordinated actions. Neither description supplies enough evidence to rank enjoyment, difficulty or efficiency, so this is a preference decision rather than a quality verdict.
What the available information does not settle
Do not use this comparison to infer a current winner on matters the product descriptions do not measure. The following details are not established here:
- Current regional prices, discounts or retailer stock.
- Total playtime or the length of individual story routes.
- Comparative difficulty, encounter frequency or learning curve.
- Which game has better writing, characters, music or visual quality.
- Review consensus or a universal ranking of the battle systems.
- Exact save-transfer behavior beyond Nintendo’s stated Switch/Switch 2 incompatibility for OCTOPATH TRAVELER.
Those unknowns are reasons to check the live store page and platform-specific information, not reasons to invent a broader conclusion.
A practical buying sequence
- Choose the narrative shape. Select DRAGON QUEST III for one hero’s quest; select OCTOPATH TRAVELER for eight traveler stories.
- Choose the party philosophy. Pick DRAGON QUEST III for recruited allies and vocations; pick OCTOPATH TRAVELER for defined travelers with individual world abilities.
- Choose the battle emphasis. Decide whether vocation-based skills and monster systems or Boost Point management sounds more appealing.
- Confirm the platform edition. Pay special attention to the Switch 2 update for DRAGON QUEST III and the separate OCTOPATH TRAVELER Switch 2 version.
- Check the live regional listing. Verify price, format, availability and, for OCTOPATH TRAVELER, the save-data implications before completing the purchase.
Final recommendation
DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake is the better match for a player seeking a classic, single-hero world quest whose party is assembled and customized through vocations, with monster recruitment and arena activities as additional systems. OCTOPATH TRAVELER is the better match for a player who wants eight character-led adventures, traveler-specific ways to interact with the world and combat that revolves around storing and spending Boost Points.
Make that preference decision first, then buy the correct platform edition. The Switch 2 details are not interchangeable: DRAGON QUEST III’s Switch release receives a free update, while Nintendo lists OCTOPATH TRAVELER as a separate Switch 2 version with incompatible Switch save data.
