Choose VALORANT for structured 5v5 tactical rounds, Counter-Strike 2 for objective-focused competitive play, or Apex Legends for squad-based hero-shooter battle royale matches. Then check your operating system, processor, graphics card, memory, storage and target frame rate before downloading.
That order matters. A game can match your preferred genre and still be a poor first download if your PC misses a security requirement, cannot spare the storage or leaves an important ranked mode behind a paid status. Use the comparison below to narrow the choice without treating “free” as a promise that every feature or item costs nothing.

Quick comparison: which game fits your priorities?
| Game | Core format | What defines the match | Free-access boundary | Published storage requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VALORANT | 5v5 tactical shooter | Agents with unique abilities, attack-and-defend rounds, one life per round | The listed overview includes Competitive, Unranked, Deathmatch and Spike Rush; verify current store terms for cosmetics and other purchases | Not stated on the cited requirements page |
| Counter-Strike 2 | Objective-focused competitive shooter | Classic round objectives and several matchmaking types | Free players can use all modes and matchmaking types except Premier; Steam Support says Premier requires Prime Status | 85 GB on the Windows listing |
| Apex Legends | Squad-based hero shooter and battle royale | Strategic squads, character abilities and battle-royale survival | Base game is free on PC; optional in-game purchases and virtual currency are available | 75 GB free space |
These are different kinds of competitive games rather than three versions of the same experience. A player who dislikes one-life rounds may prefer Apex’s squad format, while someone who wants a clearly defined objective and repeatable competitive rounds may prefer Counter-Strike 2. Hardware can override that preference: the published minimums differ substantially, and minimum specifications are not a promise of smooth performance.
Use the table as a shortlist, not a ranking. The evidence available for these three games supports format, access and system-requirement comparisons, but it does not establish a universal winner for popularity, balance, solo play or player satisfaction.

Start with the match structure
Choose VALORANT for deliberate 5v5 tactical rounds
Riot describes VALORANT as “a 5v5 tactical shooter featuring agents with unique abilities.” Its core attack-and-defend format gives each side 13 rounds, and a player has one life per round. That combination rewards communication, positioning, timing and careful use of an agent’s abilities rather than constant respawning.
The official overview lists Competitive, Unranked, Deathmatch and Spike Rush. Competitive and Unranked provide the round-based tactical structure; Deathmatch removes much of the round pressure for practice; Spike Rush is a shorter variation. Choose VALORANT when the appeal is learning a map, coordinating utility and making a small number of high-impact decisions each round.
Because each round is one life, a mistake can remove you from the action until the next round. That is part of the intended tension, not a technical fault. Players who want immediate returns after every elimination should consider the other formats before committing.
Ask yourself how you react to waiting between engagements. If observing teammates after an early elimination sounds acceptable, the one-life structure may feel meaningful. If you want uninterrupted shooting practice, Deathmatch is the listed VALORANT mode that most directly addresses that preference, although it does not turn the game into a respawn-focused overall experience.
Choose Counter-Strike 2 for objective-focused competition
Steam describes Counter-Strike 2 as classic objective-focused competitive play. The important distinction is that the competition is built around completing the round objective, managing equipment and coordinating with teammates rather than selecting a roster of ability-driven characters.
Counter-Strike 2 is the clearest fit if your priority is a traditional competitive shooter with multiple matchmaking types and a strong emphasis on objective execution. The free-to-play label needs one qualification: Steam Support states that free players can use all modes and matchmaking types except Premier. Premier requires Prime Status, so check that boundary if Premier is the specific reason you want to install the game.
Do not treat “free” as proof that every competitive feature is permanently unrestricted. The documented Premier requirement is a paid-status boundary, and current regional terms can change.

If Premier is essential, include Prime Status in the cost and access decision from the beginning.
Choose Apex Legends for squad-based hero-shooter battle royale play
Steam’s description emphasizes strategic squad play, characters with abilities and battle royale. Apex Legends is the natural choice when your preferred match is built around a team surviving and fighting across a large map rather than winning a fixed number of short attack-and-defend rounds.

EA offers Apex Legends free on PC through its EA app and Steam. The base download is free, but the game includes optional in-game purchases and virtual currency. Those purchases are not the same thing as a requirement to download the game; review the current store and regional terms if you need a precise spending estimate.
Pick Apex when you want character selection, squad strategy and the possibility of a longer match arc. If you mainly want compact, repeatable rounds with a fixed objective, VALORANT or Counter-Strike 2 is a closer match.

Team size is a useful personal filter, but do not assume a universal “best” game for solo, duo or squad players. Instead, state whether you normally queue alone, with one friend or with a full group, then compare that preference with each title’s advertised format and your willingness to coordinate with other players.
Check whether your PC is a practical fit
Compare your complete system, not just one component. You need the processor, graphics card, RAM, operating system, free storage and target frame rate. A minimum listing usually identifies what can launch the game; it does not guarantee that every map, fight or visual setting will hold a stable frame rate.
| Game and target | CPU and operating system | Memory | Graphics requirement | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VALORANT minimum, 30 FPS tier | Windows 10 (Build 19041 or newer) or Windows 11 64-bit; DirectX 11; SSE 4.2 or AVX support | 4 GB RAM | Riot publishes separate minimum, recommended 60 FPS and high-end 144 FPS tiers; consult the current graphics models on its requirements page | Not stated on the cited page |
| VALORANT Windows 11 conditions | Windows 11 64-bit | 4 GB minimum still applies | TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot required | Not stated |
| Counter-Strike 2 Windows minimum | Windows 10; four hardware CPU threads, Intel Core i5-750 or higher | 8 GB RAM | DirectX 11-compatible GPU with Shader Model 5.0 and at least 1 GB | 85 GB |
| Counter-Strike 2 Ubuntu minimum | Ubuntu 20.04 requirements are listed separately by Steam | 8 GB RAM on the listed Windows specification | DirectX details apply to the Windows listing; check the Linux-specific entry | 85 GB listed by Steam |
| Apex Legends minimum | 64-bit Windows 10; Intel Core i3-6300 or AMD FX-4350 | 6 GB RAM | GTX 950 or Radeon HD 7790, feature level 12_0, 2 GB GPU RAM | At least 75 GB free |
| Apex Legends recommended for smooth 60 FPS | Intel i5-3570K or equivalent | 8 GB RAM | GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290 | 75 GB |
Riot’s requirements page, dated May 21, 2026, lists VALORANT tiers aimed at 30 FPS, 60 FPS and 144 FPS. Riot also says it does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines. On Windows 11, TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot are additional requirements, so a computer that meets the processor and graphics figures can still fail the launch check if those security settings are disabled.
EA’s Apex figures specify 6 GB RAM and 75 GB free space at minimum, with 8 GB RAM and a GTX 970-class or Radeon R9 290-class GPU for its smooth-60-FPS recommendation. Steam’s Counter-Strike 2 listing specifies 8 GB RAM and 85 GB storage for Windows. Requirements and storage can change, so verify the live listing immediately before installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not compare processor model numbers in isolation. A system with enough RAM can still fall short on CPU threads, GPU feature level or operating-system support. Conversely, meeting a listed minimum does not tell you which visual settings or frame-rate stability you will receive. Treat the published 30-FPS, 60-FPS and 144-FPS labels as requirement targets, not independent laboratory benchmarks.
Use this decision process before installing
- Name your preferred match. Select tactical attack-and-defend rounds, objective-focused competitive play, or squad battle royale. If two formats sound equally appealing, keep both candidates for the hardware check.
- Write down your PC details. Record CPU model, graphics card, installed RAM, Windows or Linux version, free storage and the frame rate you want. Do not rely on a laptop’s marketing name; use the actual CPU and GPU models.
- Eliminate incompatible systems. Compare every required item in the table. For VALORANT on Windows 11, verify TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot. For Counter-Strike 2, reserve 85 GB. For Apex, reserve 75 GB and check the DirectX feature-level requirement.
- Check the free-tier feature you care about. If Counter-Strike 2 Premier is essential, include Prime Status in your decision. If you choose Apex, budget only for optional purchases you actually want rather than treating virtual currency as part of the download requirement.
- Choose the game with the fewest compromises. A slightly less attractive format that runs reliably is usually a better starting point than a preferred game that cannot maintain your target frame rate or fit on your drive.
- Recheck the live requirements. Modes, storage figures, security checks, regional terms and purchase rules can change after the figures above were published.
If you are undecided after the hardware check, start with the least expensive experiment: install the candidate whose base access meets your needs, use its listed practice or unranked option where available, and assess whether the pacing suits you before buying anything. A short first session can reveal whether one-life rounds, objective pressure or squad survival is the kind of repetition you actually enjoy.
How storage and frame rate affect the choice
Storage planning
Counter-Strike 2 has the largest stated storage requirement in this comparison at 85 GB. Apex lists 75 GB. VALORANT’s cited requirements page does not state a storage figure, so do not infer one from the other games.

- Next-gen 12,000 DPI HERO optical sensor delivers unrivaled gaming performance, accuracy and power efficiency
- Advanced LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming mouse for super-fast 1 ms response time and faster than wired performance
- Ultra-long battery life gives you up to 250 hours of continuous gaming on a single AA battery
- Lightweight mechanical design and classic shape for maximum maneuverability, durability and comfort
- Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver
Leave more free capacity than the exact download number when possible. Updates, temporary installation files and operating-system space can make an installation fail even when the nominal requirement appears to fit. If storage is tight, check the current installer size and remove unused files before starting rather than assuming the first download figure will remain constant.
Storage is also a practical choice between two otherwise suitable games. If your drive has less than 85 GB available, Counter-Strike 2 cannot be treated as an immediate install without clearing space. If it has between 75 GB and 85 GB, Apex may fit while CS2 does not, but leave room for the installation process and future patches. Because no VALORANT storage figure is stated on the cited page, check its current installer rather than guessing that it is smaller.
Frame-rate expectations
VALORANT is the only game here with publisher tiers explicitly labeled for 30 FPS, 60 FPS and 144 FPS. Those tiers describe Riot’s requirement targets, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee across every map and setting.
EA’s Apex recommendation is framed as a smooth 60 FPS configuration, while its minimum configuration is a launch baseline. Steam’s Counter-Strike 2 listing supplies component and storage requirements but does not establish a comparable 30/60/144-FPS tier in the cited information. Avoid declaring one title universally easiest to run from a single component or from old community anecdotes.
Set your target before comparing parts. A player satisfied with a 30-FPS minimum tier has a different purchase decision from someone planning for 144 FPS. If your target is 60 FPS, use the publisher’s recommended configuration where one exists, then leave room for the fact that settings, updates and individual systems can change actual results.

VALORANT
The listed modes—Competitive, Unranked, Deathmatch and Spike Rush—are presented in Riot’s official overview. The cited material does not provide a current price list or a complete item-store policy. Treat the game as free to download, then check the current regional store terms for cosmetic or other optional purchases.
Counter-Strike 2
Steam labels Counter-Strike 2 free to play. Steam Support’s documented exception is Premier: free players can use all modes and matchmaking types except Premier, which requires Prime Status. The exact price and regional terms are not established here, so verify them in your account’s current store before spending.
Apex Legends
EA states that Apex Legends can be downloaded free on PC through the EA app and Steam. It also includes optional in-game purchases and virtual currency. Separate the cost of accessing the base game from any cosmetics, currency or other items you may choose to buy.
For a fair cost comparison, write down three separate figures: the initial download price, any paid status required for the mode you want, and the optional amount you are willing to spend on items. Do not combine an optional purchase in Apex with the required Prime Status boundary in CS2 as though they were the same kind of fee. Recheck current regional pricing in the relevant store because exact terms can change.

Peripherals are optional, not entry requirements
A gaming mouse can be a sensible optional setup item for aiming and control, but none of the cited game pages says that a new mouse is required. Do not buy one as a substitute for meeting CPU, GPU, RAM, operating-system or storage requirements. If your PC misses a requirement, compare the full system before recommending an upgrade; a single component change may not solve an operating-system or security-setting limitation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by genre label alone
“Free FPS” covers very different loops. Read the match-structure descriptions first: one-life tactical rounds, objective-focused competition and squad battle royale produce different pacing and learning demands.
Assuming minimum specifications mean smooth play
A minimum CPU, GPU or RAM figure is not a universal performance promise. Compare the full configuration and use the publisher’s recommended tier where one is supplied, especially if your goal is a stable 60 FPS.
Forgetting Windows 11 security checks
A VALORANT installation can fail on an otherwise capable Windows 11 PC when TPM 2.0 or UEFI Secure Boot is disabled. Check firmware settings before troubleshooting graphics drivers.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Running an unsupported environment
Riot says VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines. If that is your only way to play, choose a title whose current support statement matches your setup instead of trying to force an unsupported configuration.
Leaving no room for updates
Reserve working space beyond the listed 75 GB Apex or 85 GB Counter-Strike 2 figures. A full drive can block patching even after the first installation succeeds.
Assuming every ranked feature is free
Counter-Strike 2’s Premier requirement is the clearest documented example of a paid-status boundary. Check the exact mode name you intend to play before treating a free-to-play label as a complete feature guarantee.
Comparing unsupported claims
Do not declare a title universally easiest to run, best for solo players, most balanced or most popular from these requirement pages alone. Those conclusions require different evidence. Keep the recommendation tied to the documented match format, published PC fit and access boundary.
A practical recommendation by player profile
| If you value… | Start with… | Why | Check before downloading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structured rounds, coordinated attacks and defensive setups | VALORANT | 5v5 format, agents with unique abilities, 13 attack-and-defend rounds and one life per round | Windows version, 4 GB RAM minimum, DirectX 11, and TPM 2.0/UEFI Secure Boot on Windows 11 |
| Objective-focused competition and traditional matchmaking | Counter-Strike 2 | Classic objective play with multiple matchmaking types | Whether Premier is essential; it requires Prime Status, and the Windows listing requires 8 GB RAM and 85 GB storage |
| Squad strategy, character abilities and battle royale | Apex Legends | Strategic squad play and character-driven battle-royale matches | 64-bit Windows 10, 6 GB RAM minimum, a feature-level-12_0 GPU and 75 GB free space |
If you still cannot decide, answer these questions in order: Which match structure will you play for hours? Can your PC meet every published requirement? Do you need Counter-Strike 2 Premier specifically? How much storage can you spare? The game that wins all four checks is the sensible first download.

What to include when asking for a tailored recommendation
For a more precise choice, provide your CPU model, GPU model, RAM amount, operating system and build, available storage, desired frame rate and preferred team size (solo, duo or squad). Also state whether you require a particular ranked mode. Those details allow the recommendation to distinguish a format preference from a genuine hardware or free-tier limitation.
A low-risk way to test your choice
Make a short checklist before spending money: confirm the current store page, verify the operating system and security conditions, check free storage after accounting for updates, and decide whether your target is 30, 60 or 144 FPS. Install only after those checks pass. Then use the game’s available non-ranked or practice-oriented option to learn the controls and pacing. If the format is wrong, uninstalling early avoids spending on optional items you will not use.
Keep screenshots or notes of your CPU, GPU, RAM, OS build and free space. Those details make it easier to diagnose a launch problem and to ask for a better-tailored recommendation later. They also prevent a common error: confusing a model family or marketing label with the exact hardware listed by the publisher.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which free PC shooter should I try first?
Choose VALORANT for structured 5v5 tactical rounds with agents and one life per round, Counter-Strike 2 for objective-focused competitive play, or Apex Legends for squad-based hero-shooter battle royale matches. Then eliminate any option your PC cannot meet.
Is Counter-Strike 2 completely free?
Steam labels Counter-Strike 2 free to play, but Steam Support says free players cannot use Premier. Premier requires Prime Status. Check the current regional price and terms in your account before purchasing.
How much storage do these games need?
The cited Windows listing gives Counter-Strike 2 an 85 GB requirement and EA lists Apex Legends at 75 GB free space. The cited VALORANT requirements page does not state storage, so check its current installer. Leave additional room for updates and temporary files.
Can my Windows 11 PC run VALORANT if its processor and GPU are strong enough?
Not necessarily. Riot also requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot on Windows 11, along with 64-bit Windows, DirectX 11 and the listed instruction-set support. Verify those settings before troubleshooting graphics performance.
Which game is easiest to run?
Do not make a universal claim from one component or old anecdotes. Compare your complete CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system, storage and target frame rate with each publisher’s current requirements. VALORANT publishes 30-, 60- and 144-FPS target tiers; Apex publishes a smooth-60-FPS recommendation; the cited CS2 listing gives components and storage without matching FPS tiers.
Are Apex Legends purchases required?
EA describes Apex as free on PC through the EA app and Steam, with optional in-game purchases and virtual currency. Separate the free base download from items you may choose to buy, and check current regional terms for exact prices.
Do I need a gaming mouse to play these shooters?
No cited game requirement says a new mouse is necessary. A gaming mouse can be an optional control upgrade, but it cannot replace missing RAM, GPU capability, storage, operating-system support or Windows 11 security settings.
What PC details should I provide for a personalized recommendation?
Share your CPU, graphics card, RAM, operating system and build, free storage, desired frame rate, preferred team size and whether a particular ranked mode—especially CS2 Premier—is essential.
