Choose Fidelity—called Resolution Mode in the PS5 system preset—when the game’s sharper image, lighting, reflections, or other visual features matter more. Neither setting is universally best: the game decides what each mode actually changes, and some titles offer additional or combined options.
The reliable method is to read the game’s own mode description, compare the same scene in each available option, and keep the one that makes the game feel and look better to you. Sony describes the system choice as a preference between smoother motion and higher graphical quality, not as a fixed frame-rate or resolution standard for every PS5 game.

Performance vs. Fidelity at a glance
| Option | What it generally prioritizes | Best starting point for | What is not guaranteed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | Smoother motion and the game’s higher-performance presentation | Fast action, frequent camera movement, driving, sports, and players sensitive to uneven motion | A particular frame rate, resolution, ray-tracing setting, or competitive advantage |
| Fidelity / Resolution | Higher graphical quality, such as a more detailed image or richer effects where the game supports them | Cinematic games, exploration, slower play, and players who value image detail most | A particular resolution, frame rate, or set of visual effects across the PS5 library |
| Balanced or third mode | A developer-defined mixture of visual quality and performance | Players who want a compromise and like the title’s specific explanation | That it will behave the same way as a similarly named mode in another game |
| PS5 Pro-specific mode | In supported games, features that combine or extend the traditional trade-off | PS5 Pro owners whose game documents a Pro mode | That every PS5 Pro title has the same combined mode |
Use the table as a starting decision, not as a technical specification. Sony’s system wording is deliberately qualitative: Performance Mode makes motion smoother, while Resolution Mode provides higher graphical quality. Developers can implement those priorities differently.

What the PS5 preset actually controls
The PS5 includes a system-level preference under its game presets. The setting is named Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, while individual games may call their choices Performance, Fidelity, Resolution, Quality, Balanced, or something else. The preset is only a preference for games that offer a corresponding choice; it does not create a mode in a game that has none, and it does not force every title to use identical settings.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
To set the preference, open Settings, choose Saved Data and Game/App Settings, open Game Presets, and select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode. Choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode there. A game can still provide its own menu, override the preset, or expose more choices than the two system options.
Think of the preset as a default instruction used at launch. If a title asks you to choose in its own settings, follow that title’s wording. A patch can also alter a mode’s behavior without changing the name, so an old description may no longer be complete. Some games apply the preference only after restarting the game; if nothing changes, close and relaunch it before troubleshooting the console.
Terminology: Fidelity, Resolution, Quality, and Balanced
These labels are not a standardized technical vocabulary. Sony’s support page uses “Resolution Mode,” while developers commonly use “Fidelity” or “Quality” for a visually prioritized option. One studio’s Fidelity mode may emphasize ray tracing, another may emphasize a higher internal resolution, and another may retain effects while varying the frame-rate target. Likewise, “Balanced” can mean a modest resolution compromise in one title and a sophisticated reconstruction technique in another.

How to make the choice in any PS5 game
1. Start with the way motion feels to you
Select Performance first if camera pans, aiming, turning, or rapid movement look noticeably smoother to you in that mode. This is a comfort and preference decision. The available Sony guidance supports the smoother-motion description, but it does not establish a universal input-lag reduction or a guaranteed improvement in gameplay outcomes.
Select Fidelity or Resolution first if you immediately notice and value the game’s more detailed presentation. Depending on the title, that can involve a sharper image, more advanced lighting, reflections, shadows, textures, or other effects. Do not assume every Fidelity mode includes all of those features; read the game’s explanation.
2. Read the game’s own explanation
Look in the title’s Graphics, Display, Video, or Options menu. Developers may state the target frame rate, resolution behavior, ray tracing features, image reconstruction method, or a limitation such as reduced effects. Those details are more useful than the label alone.

If the game offers a third setting such as Balanced, High Frame Rate, or a Pro mode, treat it as a separate implementation. A name shared by two games does not prove that their image quality or performance is comparable.
3. Compare an identical scene
When the game allows instant switching, stand in one location and move the camera slowly, then quickly. Look at fine geometry, distant objects, foliage, reflections, shadows, and lighting while also watching how consistently movement appears. If switching requires a reload, use the same area and camera direction after each reload.
Compare both a quiet view and active play. A mode can look nearly identical in a still screenshot yet feel different during a fast turn. Conversely, a dramatic difference in a photo mode may be hard to notice during ordinary play. Check subtitles, menus, cutscenes, and gameplay if you spend substantial time in all of them.
This comparison is not a benchmark. It is a practical way to identify which compromise you actually notice on your display. Give your eyes a few seconds to adjust before judging, and compare during the type of play that occupies most of your time rather than only in a menu or cutscene.
4. Keep the mode that removes the bigger annoyance
Choose Performance if image softness is less distracting to you than judder or less-fluid movement. Choose Fidelity if reduced visual detail is more distracting than the game’s performance trade-off. If neither compromise is obvious from your normal seating distance, either choice is reasonable; leave the system preset on the option you want games to try by default.
5. Recheck after major updates
Game patches can add a new mode, change a target, or improve an existing implementation. Revisit the game’s notes and graphics menu after a substantial update, especially on PS5 Pro, where developers may add separate enhancements. Save your preferred choice again if the update reset the title’s options.
Why there is no universal Fidelity frame rate
Players often ask whether Fidelity always means 30 frames per second or whether Performance always means 60. The available official guidance does not establish one cross-game number. PS5 games have different engines, resolutions, effects, reconstruction techniques, and update histories, so a mode name cannot supply a library-wide specification.

Use a number only when the game’s developer or an official description gives it for that title and version. Otherwise, describe the choice in the terms Sony uses: Performance generally favors smoother motion; Fidelity or Resolution generally favors higher graphical quality. This also explains why two games can both offer Performance and Fidelity yet look and feel different.
A stated target is not necessarily a guarantee that every scene will hold that rate. Developers may use dynamic resolution or adjust effects during demanding sequences. Treat menu language as the intended behavior for that version, and judge consistency in the sections you actually play.
What PS5 Pro changes
PS5 Pro does not turn the traditional two-mode decision into one universal setting. Supported games can add modes that combine features or provide additional visual options, and support is decided title by title.
Sony’s PS5 Pro product information quotes Insomniac Games Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald describing Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s Performance Pro mode: “Players of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will find a new default Performance Pro mode, which marries the crisp 4K resolution and ray tracing features of Fidelity mode with the speedy 60 frames per second of Performance mode.” The same description identifies a Fidelity Pro mode with additional ray-tracing-based rendering features. Those are specifications for that game, not a promise about every PS5 Pro title.
A September 25, 2024 PlayStation Blog first-look report likewise said that many PS5 games let players choose Fidelity and Performance to suit their tastes, and that some PS5 Pro games appeared to combine benefits of high fidelity and high performance. Treat that report as a description of the games shown in that first-look context, not as a guarantee for later releases or every compatible title.

- Open the game’s graphics or display menu and identify every available Pro-labelled, Balanced, Fidelity, and Performance option.
- Read the developer’s description for each option, including any stated resolution, frame-rate target, ray-tracing feature, or requirement.
- Compare the same scene as you would on a standard PS5, then decide whether the extra visual features are noticeable on your screen.
- Do not select a mode solely because it includes the word Pro. Its priorities and trade-offs are specific to that game.
How your TV, monitor, and HDMI connection affect the result
The display does not determine which in-game mode is best, but it can determine whether an output feature is available. Sony says 120 Hz Output provides 120 Hz video output when both the TV and the game support that frame rate. A compatible 4K 120 Hz display and an HDMI 2.1 connection can therefore matter to players whose game and console setup support high-refresh-rate output, but buying a new display is not necessary to choose Performance or Fidelity.
If you are shopping specifically for high-refresh output, treat a 4K 120 Hz gaming monitor or television with HDMI 2.1 as an optional equipment path, not a prerequisite. Verify the exact port and input specifications; a display advertised as 120 Hz may not provide that rate on every input. There is no single required purchase for selecting either mode, and display prices or retailer availability vary.

To inspect the connection, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The PS5 can show information about the connected HDMI device, including supported resolution and VRR capabilities. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic when your TV and game support it. If the option is unavailable or the screen drops signal, check the display’s HDMI port, cable, input mode, and the manufacturer’s specification before changing the game mode.
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
VRR allows a compatible display to adjust its refresh rate in real time with a compatible game. Sony notes that results vary by TV and game. VRR does not make every mode run at a fixed rate, guarantee that all stutter disappears, or turn a Fidelity implementation into a Performance implementation. Enable it only when the console, display, connection, and game support it, then judge the actual result in the title you play.

A practical setup checklist
- Update the PS5 system and the game so you are evaluating the current options.
- Record which mode the title starts with and whether it asks for a restart after changing it.
- Confirm the display’s resolution, refresh-rate, and VRR capabilities in the PS5 video-output information screen.
- Use the same save, location, camera direction, and lighting conditions for each comparison.
- Test ordinary gameplay for several minutes, not just a dramatic opening scene.
- Write down the compromise you notice: softer image, missing effects, uneven motion, or no meaningful difference.
- Revisit the choice after a major patch or after moving the console to another display.
This checklist separates three decisions that are often confused: the game’s rendering mode, the console’s default preference, and the display’s output capability. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
Choosing by game type without treating genres as rules
Fast action and aiming
Performance is usually the sensible first test when the game asks you to track moving targets, turn rapidly, drive, or react to frequent changes on screen. The reason is perceptual: smoother motion may be easier for you to follow. It is not evidence of a guaranteed competitive advantage, and a player who values sharper detail may still prefer Fidelity.
Cinematic adventures and exploration
Fidelity or Resolution is a sensible first test when you spend long periods examining environments, lighting, character detail, or set-piece scenes. If camera movement in that title feels distracting, switch to Performance; the correct choice is the one whose compromise you notice less.
Turn-based, strategy, and management games
These games often give you more time to inspect a scene, so Fidelity may be attractive, but the mode labels still do not predict the exact result. Test the areas where you spend the most time, including scrolling across a large map or managing a crowded scene.
When a mode is missing or appears not to work
- No Performance or Fidelity option: The game may not expose selectable modes. The PS5 preset cannot add one.
- The system preset has no visible effect: The title may use its own setting, may require a restart, or may have only one rendering mode.
- A third option appeared after an update: Read the new in-game description; do not infer its behavior from another game’s Balanced or Pro mode.
- 120 Hz is unavailable: Verify that the TV, HDMI port, cable, console setting, and game all support 120 Hz. Sony’s video-output screen can show the connected device’s reported capabilities.
- VRR behaves differently between games: That is expected when game and display implementations differ. Check both products’ compatibility information.
- The picture looks softer than expected: Performance may use a different resolution or image-reconstruction strategy in that title. Confirm the developer’s description before treating softness as a console fault.
- Visual features are missing: Some effects are deliberately reserved for Fidelity, a Pro mode, or a particular resolution target. Switch modes and consult the game’s notes.
- The game reverts after every launch: Check whether the title stores its own graphics setting separately from the PS5 preset, and confirm that the game has completed its save or configuration process.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not assume a screenshot proves how a mode feels in motion. Do not compare two different games and conclude that their Performance settings are equivalent. Do not buy a 120 Hz display expecting it to add a mode that the game does not support. Do not treat “4K” in a product description as proof that every scene is rendered at a fixed native resolution. Finally, do not keep changing settings based on internet labels when your own display and seating distance make the difference imperceptible.

A simple decision rule
- Choose Performance if smooth movement is the first thing you notice.
- Choose Fidelity or Resolution if image quality and visual effects are the first thing you notice.
- Choose Balanced or another third option only after reading that game’s explanation.
- On PS5 Pro, evaluate each Pro mode as a title-specific design rather than assuming it combines the same features everywhere.
- Check 120 Hz and VRR compatibility separately; your display can affect available output features, but it does not decide your visual preference.
There is no single correct PS5 mode. The best setting is the one that suits your eyes, your game, and your display after you have compared the developer-defined options in the same scene.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PS5 Fidelity mode always 30 fps?
No. Sony does not define a universal frame rate for Fidelity or Resolution Mode. Use 30 fps, 60 fps, or another number only when that game’s developer documents it for the current version.
Is Performance mode always 60 fps?
No. Performance generally prioritizes smoother motion, but the target and consistency vary by title. Check the game’s graphics menu or official specifications.
Recommended Free Tools
Which mode should I use for competitive games?
Performance is a sensible first test if smoother camera movement helps you track action, but Sony’s guidance does not establish a guaranteed input-lag reduction or competitive advantage. Choose the mode whose trade-off you notice less.
Does the PS5 preset work with every game?
No. The Performance Mode or Resolution Mode preset is only a preference for games that offer a corresponding choice. A title with one fixed rendering mode will not gain another option from the system setting.
Why do two games’ Fidelity modes look different?
Developers choose their own resolution, effects, ray tracing, reconstruction, and frame-rate behavior. The labels are not cross-game specifications.
What is the best PS5 Pro mode?
There is no universal best Pro mode. Read the game-specific descriptions and compare its Performance Pro, Fidelity Pro, Balanced, or other options in the same scene. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, for example, documents a Performance Pro mode that combines features associated with its Fidelity and Performance modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo I need a 4K 120 Hz TV or HDMI 2.1 to choose Performance or Fidelity?
No. Those are optional requirements for supported 4K 120 Hz output, not prerequisites for selecting an in-game mode. Confirm that the console, display, HDMI connection, and game support 120 Hz before expecting that output.
What does VRR change?
With a compatible TV and game, VRR adjusts the display refresh rate in real time. Sony notes that results vary, so VRR does not guarantee a fixed frame rate or eliminate every stutter issue.
The Bottom Line
Start with Performance for smoother motion and Fidelity/Resolution for richer image quality, then verify the game’s own description. Compare the same scene, treat Balanced and PS5 Pro modes as title-specific, and check 120 Hz or VRR compatibility separately from your personal preference.
